18 Ways Las Vegas ROBS You of Your Fun

Ойын-сауық

While a trip to Las Vegas can be a fun and enjoyable experience, I asked my followers about things that can make a vacation less enjoyable or experiences that can sour a fun moment. The responses ranged from crime and homelessness to street maintenance and more.

Valid concerns Jacob brought up, IMHO: Broken escalators, occasionally the crazy homeless people, quality of food on the strip has definitely gone down. Which concerns seem like nonsense to me: No buffets (Good!), Taxi long haul ( Take buses or Uber/Lyft ), card handing out people ( Run into them on the sidwalk: nothing they can do about it if they are in your way.), driving congestion ( Do not drive in LV) , photo bombing people on the sidewalk ( I would not be taking pictures there anyways. )

Stay away from Rhumbar at Mirage if you want to keep your good streak of customer service going. Rhumbar hostess sat us down and we waited 20min before someone asked us how we are. Not what we wanted to drink. but how we are. She disappeared for another 10min then asked us about drinks and took forever to bring our drinks. I worked in service. i know busy. yes it was busy. i also know she only had four tables to service while everyone else had their own tables. i watched her. she was just really slow. not going back even though another influencer said she loved Rhumbar. not me.

Yeah it’s clear by my first time here in 20 years that everything is designed to maximize profits and take as much as your money as possible. When the MGM owns countless hotels, they also own all the food prices and a $6 bottle of water at one hotel is also $6 at the other hotel. Comes across as price fixing. And the convenience store at Mandalay Bay didn’t even post any prices, which codes across as dishonest.

I admire your honesty in dealing with the real issues in Vegas. I think the problem will always be the very nature of Vegas itself, from drinking to gambling - they are all vices that many people simply let get out of control. It's like trying to enjoy a walk in the forest with everyone playing with fire to some degree, you hope no one burns the forest down but most likely someone is always trying.

I miss the old Vegas. I used to get comped suites, meals, show tickets, and all kinds of other stuff. Once the Corporations bought out the Mob, Vegas went downhill. When they made it family friendly also killed the cool vibe it had. You used to be able to get these coupon books that had decent coupns for free chips, match play, and casinos used to cash paychecks for free. I can remember if I had to pay for breakfast it was like 99 cents or some other low price. Now they nickle and dime you for everything and act like they are doing you a favor if they give you a Tee shirt. I also remember penny slots... cheap way to kill time.

Then the buffet prices went through the roof. Then the minimums for table game went sky high. This was all before Covid. The final staw was the PBR finals left for Texas. Thank GOD. I had a wonderful casino host when I used to go to Primm. The first I knew of him he actually called me in my room and wanted to know why I never asked for any comps. I told him I didn't know I could. He then had me and my 3 friends relocated to a suite, gave me (and friends) free food at their fine dining restaurant, free booze, and so on. Every time I went after that I was given a suite and fabulous food. It made me feel really special. I miss those days. The comps are horrible now.

In the 70’s for $20 dollars a person I could fly round trip from Orange County. Private bus round trip to the Sands Hotel. Free lunch at the cafe.. All you had to do was play $5 blackjack for 4 hours out of the 8 hours you were there. Did that many times and at Christmas time the Sands gave me $50 in chips, without me asking. I was not a high roller. I took about $400 to gamble with. And if you brought 10 people with you your trip was free. This deal was advertised in the newspaper for anyone to sign up for. Also the casino host would meet you at the Orange County airport and fly with you and always be around to help you. You could even leave the Sands for 4 hours if you did your 4 hours of playing $5 a hand blackjack. They put a little number on your shirt so the pit boss could keep track of you. It was as fun as It sounds.

Another outstanding video. I miss the days of comps. Now it seems every casino wants you to get their players card and you need to accumulate points. I am a "Boomer" turning 21 in the 80's. I can remember playing craps and blackjack getting comped with meals quite often and they really pushed the drinks. Vegas has changed over the years, so have I. Jacob, on one of your upcoming videos on things to do in Vegas, show us the inside of that "Hall of Fame Pinball." I think I read that the owner donates profits to Vegas charities. DO NOT EXPECT CUSTOMER SERVICE IN VEGAS unless you are ready to TIP BEFORE anything is done for you. Very few have listening or communication skills. If you are a poker player, it's really disappointing. You mentioned less Buffets - the affordable ones closed down leaving the very expensive Buffets open. I'm hoping more attention is being spent on Hotel room cleanliness which had gone right down the drain as housekeeping staff got laid off, quit, left Vegas. The examples of dirty rooms and grossness was captured by several You Tuber's I watch and it was something I'd never seen in Vegas over the past 20 years I've been going. Disgusting!

I was in Vegas a couple weeks ago. Not only were the homeless numerous, they were as aggressive as I have ever encountered. In four days, we had half a dozen encounters but two were significant. Walking mid strip about 6-8 black guys basically cornered the myself and two buddies. They claimed to be rappers and wanted to give us some sort of mini CD. Then they said they work “for tips” and basically demanded money. It was tense and they were WAY inside of our personal space at this point. My buddy gave them $20 to appease the animals, but it was a mugging sans the weapons ( which I am sure they had.). The second was on Fremont street while we were watching a band on the stage near D hotel. A homeless black guy wondered next to us at the front near the stage, turned his back to us and slowly backed into me. I nudged him with my shoulder to let him know he was in my personal space and he turned looking upset. I told him he bumped into me and the blank glassy eyed stare back told me everything. He was either on drugs and/ or a mental case. Anyhow, he started to approach me two more times and each time I pushed him in the chest and told him to get back. Finally one of my buddies noticed and basically got in between us and the homeless guy eventually wondered away. What made me most uncomfortable was not the prospects of a fight since he probably weighed 120 lbs and was malnourished, but he constantly was fidgeting in his jacket pockets. Could have easily taken out out a weapon which would have changed everything obviously. Beware when you visit Vegas ppl.

With the escalators the biggest problem is the desert sand blown in them constantly by the wind. They run 24/7 in a non-climate controlled environment. Compare this to the typical escalator that is inside. That said did not realize that sometimes 50% are out of service. That is sad.

Originally, shows, restaurants, and other attractions were loss leaders. They attracted the crowds, many of whom would then gamble. But since Vegas went "family" in the late 1980s, they moved to a structure where each venue at the casino must be profitable. So, you don't get to have a great bargain at the buffet in order to get you to gamble. Going to Vegas--with crummy gambling, expensive attractions and restaurants, resort fees, parking fees, and all the rest--is like getting pecked to death by a pack of ducks.
