179. Narrowboat trip back from the end of the Ashby Canal to Hinckley
#narrowboat #narrowboats #canal #canals #liveaboard #cruisingthecut
Having reached the end of the Ashby canal there is no choice but to turn around and re-rewind, going back the way you came. Having already documented the journey up in several videos, I compacted much of the return trip into this one, ending up back at Trinity Marina where I stopped again while I went to the Crick Show.

absolutely love your new sound system--the sounds of the birds chirping, a little bit of the water sounds, and of course the terrific scenery
You really make it hard to continue living in the frozen north... Although right now, when it's Midsummer's Eve, I can't seem to be quite as envious as I usually am. You can't beat the Swedish summer, it's the best day of the year!
If I didn't have mobility issues (brain tumours), I would be very tempted to emigrate and buy a narrow boat. Your videos bring me a lot of joy.

I'm glad you enjoy them. Cheers!
At your age you have only earned the right to be "A disagreeable old sod" not "A grumpy old man" but I can see it in your future. Love the vlogs, keep them coming.
I had to google "Belinda Carlisle", but here we are: "Heaven is a place on earth".
I wonder how many viewers caught the radio term 'half duplex' as applied to the tunnel near the beginning. I laughed out loud at it. Very good.

Not just a radio term. Data-communication term also.
Just started watching these vlogs, totally inspired! What a lovely way to live. Absolutely gob smacked that a small number of people feel the need to give this a “thumbs down” ! There’s nothing to not like about this. Please keep it up 👍
‘Ooooh heaven is a place on earth...’ 🤟🏻
Half-duplex. Now that's a term I haven't heard since my days working in telecom's! It's a suitable description of that tunnel though! 😀
The weather was causing drooling to this photographer. Thank you for sharing this lovely trip.
Steam trains, peacefull canal and narrow boats, couldn't get any better 😍
Just to correct you David. That isn't a bat box but is in fact a public phone for calling Batman in times of need.

Oops! Silly of me!
The Canal & River Trust bloke doing the depth survey has a good job, especially in nice weather.
16:13 This is just a kind of CRT action I’m talking about. Did you see how fast he was going? This is obviously a nuclear powered vessel. And the depth survey thing was all a big cover-up. He’s really checking all the nuclear missile silos along the canal.
Hello from Lowell Indiana.I found your site about a month ago and have been binge watching ever since,I love it.

I love your closing sound track. Never get tired of it. Plus prepares one for the end of the vlog.

Me too!
Now that train! That is my preferred means of transport. Linen topped dining tables, fold out bed and attendant to open it., length of the train to walk.
Grumpy old man? Not hardly! I find you totally pleasant David. Noticed that even when the sky is overcast the canal is still very pleasant and calming. Thank you another wonderful video.

I don't show the bits where I'm grumpy :-)
Thank you so much ...for the beauty, serenity, and the steam train. The Ashby is my favorite canal you've traveled so far.
I fell behind on your videos but now I get to binge them all and I'm ready to BLISS OUT on lock montages and quiet stretches of canal

I wondered what had happened to you ;-)
My blood pressure goes down after watching your videos. Glad I subscribed.
The style of narrow boats always reminds me of the old steam engine trains. From their shape, color schemes and decor, all the way to functionality. If I owned a narrow boat I would figure a way to outfit my vessel with an authentic steam whistle! It would be grand for me,anyhow. Well done, sir.
1:30 - Gosh I haven't heard 'half duplex' in years - distant memories of sync v async data comms, modems, and 2400bps dial-up. Definitely not 'good old days'!
Hi just a little bit of information for you , as you passed the Ashby centre the red three wheeler was a now very rare Reliant Ant, based on the car of the same make . Just thought you may like to know . 👍🏻😎👍🏻
Your not a vlogs are my sleep remedy. The sound of the engine is a lullaby, with occasional bird song. I watch until my eyes close, and if I wake, as I so often do, there it is, the canal, the sky, the ducks, all of it that I love so much. What a great gift you have given me....if ever i can, I will donate on pateron, or what ever it is. I don't have social media, you tube is as social as I can manage.
Got past by a steamtrain in your nerrowboat King of the Hill, butifull video thanks again
Such beautiful scenery ... the Midlands are truly an English treasure!
I agree The Ashby Canal is very picture perfect. No locks makes it easy for us older folk. Great vlog.
Thanks for answering the "do people greet you from other vessels" question.
"a bat box, or some kind of nature conservation thing" classic CTC one liner!!
What a beautiful stretch of canal - no wonder you took your time.
Brilliant vlog, David! Just so wonderful to see parts of the UK canal system through your eyes! Thank you so much for sharing 😊 👍 👍 All love, and best wishes, Claire and the girls, 2 very 'older Goldies'! 😊👌👍❤
You always seem to deliever on the most majestic English Countryside. As I've said in past comments England is a very old and absolutely stunning country. Being from across the pond I never get enough of it when I've visited. The food the people the sights never get old lol
I love the Ashby canal. We often walk up and down the towpath feeling very envious of all those beautiful boats going by. Still dreaming! Maybe one day.
Re the Magnum “knock-off.” In my previous career as a photo/video journalist it became a quest for me to find a Magnum bar in each new country I visited. I learned to look for the heart-shaped logo as the brand, like Walls, changes, but the heart logo was the Magnum provider. Out of the 70+ countries I worked in, I probably found Magnums in half of them. Thanks for a nice reminder! Cheers from a former Surrey resident.
A lovely trip! Thank you. We googled "winding hole" and the history of the word took us to windlass and to words in Old Norse and Icelandic. Thus a narrowboat trip can take one far afield indeed.
The tree-lined segment early on was magnificent, especially the reflections on the canal. Thanks for another great video.
What a beautiful part of the world.
THANK YOU FOR POSTING, I ALWAYS ENJOY YOUR WIT & BEAUTIFUL SCENERY! WISH WE HAD A CANAL SYSTEM LIKE THIS IN THE USA =)
What no Gin today love your videos having a a rum and ginger beer today or as we Aussie call it dark and stormy
You answered a big question I had about greetings offered between boat captains on the move-----I am glad to hear you do at least "wave"------it all seemed to be cold and formal when somebody went by.
Possibly, no, the best accompanied music of all the Canal Vlogs on the Tube!
I have checked, and my BP is always much lower after watching one of these videos than before. Well apart from the one on the Thames, which still gives me the collywobbles.
🤣 that swan at 6:15 waiting for the very last moment to make a course correction is hilarious.
Ah, manure spreading... There's some memories! My father assigned that chore of his dairy farm to me as soon as I was able to run tractors.
Ever since you mentioned about getting a stereo microphone, I only listen to you vlogs with my headphones on...ty
Lovely! Thank you for this calm beautiful day.
Grumpy old man? No, no I think of you as a "Curmudgeon with a bit of OCD" What a joy to be woken up by my 55 year old bladder only to find a fresh video up from David. Looking forward to seeing what you do at Crick or is this video out of order? Keep it up King of the Cut. Another quite enjoyable video.
Some very nice scenery. I always find your narration entertaining. Thank you.
Bright sunshine and reflections of trees in the canal always makes me think 'Jigsaw Puzzles' - Could be a nice sideline for an enterprising guy with a few tools at his disposal! Lovely scenery AND a steam train - just a perfect week!
Narrow boats and a steam engine...bliss :-)
Thank you very much for this very scenic journey down the Ashby canal and back. A spot along this canal would be my ideal home mooring as well.
I noticed canal boats when I visited England many years ago. I am delighted to have found your vlogs. Your bits of history are what I thoroughly enjoy. I’ve watched most of your vlogs but I haven’t been able to thumbs up most of them. I like to watch them on my large smart TV and the usual menu items available when using a mobile device are not available on the TV KZread app. I do like the how-to aspect of your vlogs that let us know about life and maintenance on a narrow boat. BTW, I’m watching from Beavercreek Ohio in the US. Thanks for the vlogs!

Thank you for watching!
Very lovely scenery and interesting to see the stream train.
Greetings from Canada on this Summer Solstice June 21st. "Summer" by name only, since it is but 10-to-11C in mid a.m. MANY thanks for the idyllic ride as I enjoyed a cuppa'. Cheers from here!!
It never ceases to amaze just how beautiful the scenery is.
My friend from London once told me: ”Nothing is as Dangerous as an English Bloke with too much time on his hands” I think your videos have proven that statement, I love your videos . Cheers from Denmark :)
Thoroughly wonderful cruising experience, despite the overtaking misunderstanding, the nearest you get to "canal rage". Keep on and take care.
Yes, that's a bat house. Bats are useful and eat the bugs flying around the canal. So never hurt any bats you see flying around in the evening. The views you get are just stunning. What a lovely life.

Why on earth would I hurt a bat?!!

Some people are afraid of them. Probably seen too many Dracula movies.
I enjoyed the steam locomotive, another interest of mine. Thanks for showing.
Yep - glorious is the word for the Ashby canal ... lovely scenery, steam locomotives, magical sheep - what more could you ask for! But really, it seems more interesting things were happening on this short canal than on many of the longer ones. Now back to watch the Harry Plotter vlog to see where we are headed next! Thanks for the trip and the gorgeous filming.
Hi David I have watched all your vlogs and I must say your commentary’s are excellent, it is so much more interesting than just watching scenery go by even though it’s very lovely. This video was particularly enjoyable and your mooring choices looked superb, all the best to you and good luck!
I´m quite smitten with the railway steam engine accelerating - what a marvelous huffing sound!! So nice that you went and captured that moment! thx : )) 7:17 > >
Yes Ogri I was wondering the very same thing. Funny how language evolves over time. We just have to try and keep up lol. Great video as always David. Thanks for sharing.
Lovely video as always! So soothing to someone stuck in the city at a typical job! :) And yes, that is a Bat Box on the bridge.
Hello David your Cruising the Cut drives me into a kind of mental alpha-state, lucky you and all the boaters living healed by it's energy!!! Cheers from hectic-go-crazy Caracas nevertheless always sunny city!!
Thank you for explaining the timing of the exchange of greetings between narrowboaters. I appreciate the new bow microphones and wonder if they could be fitted to pick up a bit more of the sound of the bow cutting though the water. Thanks for all you do!

The current location of the mic is the only practical one.
I'm amazed at how confidently you handle the tunnels now! If only you could do something about the snotty swans who won't move for you.
I have now made it to your latest VLOG. I've managed to slowly make it here and watched every single episode to date. Its been a great ride. Thank you so much for all your efforts. I truly enjoy content.
Delightful trip thank you.
Circles in the silt 🤣😉. Pleased you addressed narrow boat greetings, l was wondering about that. Another relaxing video 🤗

Very enjoyable. + 👍👍👍 for your professional camera/phone footage; no "shaky portrait view" filming here !
Ahhhhhhhhh......Yet another relaxing cruise on the cut....Thank you !
Wonderful trip David, looks like the Ashby is a great place to relax and take a time out from the hurly burly world of the mainline canals! :-)
Delightful viewing as always x
Wonderful and relaxing as always.
Very enjoyable trip! Thanks for sharing!
What is it about steam trains and canal boats that make us smile and makes the world seem a better place? Another lovely relaxing vlog David, thank you.

Loved seeing the footage about the steam train wonderful memories flooded back from my childhood xoxxo
Taking it at "quack" speed?? Vlog is great!! Your right about the bow view. An herb induced slow mo of that trip would have been THE trip!! Ever been on a comfy sail boat? ...this vid is one reason i follow.
Another fantastic video, thanks for your efforts!
Another excellent video sir!
Loved it thanks 😁👍👏👏👏
David, we watch your videos to slow down and enjoy you canal life. I will admit to being very envious, but I will keep that to myself. ;-) Brillant camera and editing work. So seamlessly done, most of us don't realize your great talent. For me, I love to take the time to "look up" the buildings you mention. Especially the pub and restaurants. A quick Google search will give us the menus and prices. It's almost like being there. Many thanks my friend for seeing your part of your world through your eyes.

Really needed this relaxing vlog today - Thanks.
Thanks for the upload.
Nice trip David. Thanks.
Enjoyable cruise David thanks for sharing
Thanks for posting! Your lifestyle is an inspiration.
One of the best narrowboat ever!
Drama is rarely a solitary sport. No one watching while you use the winding hole? No drama. Someone observing? Now the drama begins! It's like when I start the old Triumph motorbike at home and no ones watching, it'll start as it should. Get it in front of some people and (kick kick kick kick kick...) the drama begins! Another great vlog, I would put the Ashby down for doing again!
Another excellent vid. Love the new camera angles, cheers.
I love the sound of the motor ,its so relaxing
Always a pleasure, David.
Thoroughly enjoy all your vlogs and real time cruising well done:))
Nice one David , very enjoyable. 👍
Looked like a nice peaceful trip.
