17-Year-Old Discovers and Nearly Falls Into Massive Sinkhole

A 17-year-old boy discovered a sinkhole in his grandfather's field in the Konya province of central Turkey. The night before, he’d been walking in the area, and he said there was no indication of the geologic disturbance. But the next morning, he says he nearly fell into the hole. Had he done so, tragedy would have resulted; the sinkhole is 9 feet across, but more than 200 feet deep. It wasn’t an isolated occurrence, as a number of sinkholes have appeared in Konya in recent years. #InsideEdition

Sinkholes cant actually be formed on all part of the world. They require a specific soil such as a very common sandstone (in america) that can hold big pockets of air or water to form. And when the pressure gives in, it collapses. Much like a lava cake. U could be living on top of one and ud never know unless u look it up and even then it can appear quite suddenly and slowly grow in size

@@nextup8598 We do actually have a pretty good idea on how sink holes form (although we do suck at predicting their possible locations before they open up). My best guess is that the creators of this video misunderstood the science. Removing water has nothing to do with causing the rock to collapse. There aren’t giant pockets of water below us. Water is actually stored/moves through permeable rocks (rocks with tiny interconnected holes kinda like a solid sponge) called reservoirs. You can remove the water and those reservoir rocks will still be there.

“When water is removed, it collapses”… that’s not how sink holes form.. I think you have misunderstood the science. Water does play a part in the formation of sinkholes but not due to its removal as you suggested. Most sinkholes generally form due to a process know as dissolution. Basically as underground water flows through permeable rocks, they can cause softer, more easily weathering rocks such as chalk to dissolve (similar to the rocks observed in the video directly below the upper soil layers). Over time, more and more of the soft rock is dissolved which can eventually form huge caverns (like those you see in the photo). The effects of this developing void in the lower layer rocks can often go unnoticed on ground level for many years (even hundreds or thousands or longer!). However, eventually the stress on the upper layer rocks and soil becomes too much, the the top layer collapses forming the sink hole.
