Love that you trash-talked yourself when you didn’t set the hook. Hilarious and respectable.
FYI, In most states adding an electric trolling motor puts your kayak into the powered category and you will need to register it annually.

My favorite accessories are the ones that you don't really need but they make kayak fishing an easier and more pleasant endeavor. A good pair of polarized sunnies, a wide brimmed straw hat (aka a Farmer's fedora,) a BIG insulated water jug (I use a 1 gallon Ozark trail from Wally World,) light Frogg Toggs rain suit, sun block and a good small soft cooler for some grub to tie ya through the trip.

PFD is a must. Was a Paramedic for 11 years. Been around the water my whole life. A lot of very good swimmers and boaters get pulled off the bottom of rivers and lakes. I know my wife and kids would like me to be as safe as possible. You don't need the pfd when you can swim. You need it when you can't. My 2 cents

I always where a PFD. I fish in a lake with a lot of boat traffic (Lake George in NY) or on a fast moving river(Hudson River in NY) a PFD is a must. Allowing a pfd to keep you afloat in fast moving water you can focus on recovering your gear. And in the lake you can focus on getting your gear and moving out of the way of boats.

You know you could use the lip grip for a brush grabber. I do theres always some place to hook it. Use the hole to grab a branch.
I have polarized glasses that have 2.0x readers on the lower half. Great for tying.
Love my brush anchor. I do catfishing out my topwater 120 pdl and the brush grips work great for clamping on to logs or stumps where the big catfish like to hide.

for the trolling motor I went cheap. I got a a minn kota c2 30lb thrust and I have taken it out a few times now. it was really good and had plenty pf power to get my kayak to a decent controlled speed. though after some time I took it off the side mount and DIY a steering system and control system to have it mounted to the back of my kayak and that has changed it to be an even better essential for me. there are plenty of tutorials with different kayaks and different methods of getting this done but 10/10 recommend

Just caught your video, love it. One suggestion I would make, a kitchen funnel with about 18 inches of silicone tube attached to the small end. Run the tube through a scupper hole and you have an instant urinal. Comes in handy with that cooler of beer and 5 or 6 hours on the water.

I don’t have a yak, I have a lifetime with a bro craft mount running a minnkota 30/30, lithium batteries, 7 inch fish finder mounted on a console panel. Spent last winter wiring it. I did the all the work myself and learned a lot. If you want to really enjoy fishing, a motor is such a relief! To be honest with you all, I’m in my sixties and still love getting out on the water but with age we need a boost an so I put a motor on it. Worth every penny! Some days I just putter around the lake enjoying the little things in life.

I just got a Nucanoe Frontier and put a trolling motor on the back. I can put an outboard but I went electric first. main reason is its a 2 person we might get tired so the motor gets us back. I stand and fish and sit on a cooler. the guest gets the 360 seat.
I never used to wear a PFD until I started fishing kayak tournaments. Now it's a habit. I got the NK180 motor. It's great. Pushes my PA14 around at 5.5. I even run it on extremely low power to quickly run down banks at times. The down side is its 24V and those batteries are not cheap. I use a 50AH and I've never ran it dead. Total set up was a little over 2K. I will say if you're someone who jerk bait fishes, drop shots or just generally likes to get a bunch of cast in. The Xi3 with spot lock is probably your best bet. It's actually cheaper to set up if you use a budget battery. There's plenty of decent lifepo 12v options out there. Check out Will Prose reviews on batteries here on KZread. You can set up an Xi3 with spotlock for around 1700. The Xi3 is also a better option if you already have a power pole on the stern.

Fishing ponds I guess it isn't important but fishing inshore or near shore get a safety flag with a 360* light!
I wear a pfd before I even step into a kayak, boat, or whatever cause all i can do is doggy paddle decent lol so i feel safe n worry free as long as im wearing it
I use a power pole in some rivers. When im fishing a shallow river with a muddy bottom, where I know ill be throwing flies out there, ill plant it in the current and throw. If im just bait fishing, sitting down relaxing, I just use spot lock on my trolling motor. Its great when im sight fishing bass close to shore too. I fish a few kayak bass tournaments a year, when Im not fishing them with my boat, and its an incredible tool for sightfishing bass. Ill stand and use a pole I made, and push my 133x down the shore looking for fish by eye and livescope, when I get where I want to be, i click the button on my fob, and the powerpole stakes itself. Its been great for me. Expensive enough, but I could afford it, and it works. I actually ordered one for my wifes kayak not long ago. She was jealous. I would also like to get a smaller, more powerful version, with wooden stakes, for vampires.
@wendellfishing

My man.. I would love to see your rig. Sounds amazing. Also, I have a vampire I need you to take care of
Anchor trolley is amazing if your a paddle only. I use brush grips on certain waters, not something I carry everywhere. A net is a must for me fishing for pike, not putting a 40 inch thrashing fish anywhere on my kayak until those treble hooks are out of its face. Also a good pair of fishing pliers goes with that, once those bass get over 5lbs it can be hard to pop the hook out of that cartilage.

I wear my PFD at times and don't at times. Some of the areas I fish are less than 4 feet deep. I do not wear it in those places unless my 5 year old is out with me. I don't let him see me on the water without mine cause I don't let him out of his unless we are in the parking lot.
how I anchor my pwc which is a fully decked out jet ski including fish finder is a 5lb scuba weight right beside me that drops quickly and quietly and I have a second scuba weight on a rope to allow me to position myself to face any direction I choose
I have a Lifetime Teton (I think). I recently built a cart to help transport it. I’m very happy with how it turned out. I also just bought a trolling motor for it. A 12 V Minn Kota 55Lb thrust 36’ shaft. I also have a Garmin Vivid 4CV with a 4 inch display. My question is the battery. What should I get? I’m guessing one of those small 12V is not gonna be enough or last very long.

I fish a lot of rocky rivers with thick brush, and it's excellent for those situations. I also like it for kayak trips. Just clip it to a tree at night at the edge of the river. My 133x carries tons of gear. I do 5 day trips on rivers and lakes with it, and it's been incredibly handy, rather than dragging a huge kayak and 200lbs of gear on shore every time you eat or shit. I always wear my pfd. Last May i was fishing in calm water. A buddy was having problems so i pulled next to him to help out. While there, a boat came rolling by and threw a wake at us. It hit both yaks, broadside. My buddy's yak was hit first and a split second later i was. The two kayaks collided while the wake was under us. His yak hit mine and lifted my yak up. I fell off my yak. The pfd lifted me to the surface immediately. I was able to grab the side of the yak and our buddies who were near came to help out. I did not have to dig out my pfd from my yak. You need it immediately. I know the arguements for not wearing it, but I want it to work for me in the one time its really needed. Make sure you get a properly fitting pfd. Its more comfortable, so your more likely to wear it.

You are a fishing purist!!! Not many of you left
Ironically, I am selling my 12' Seastream Openwater and "downgrading" to a Pelican Catch because of the seat. I bought a boat because the kayak is unsafe to fish where Iive and yet tomorrow my wife and I are going to one of the few secluded areas where kayak fishing is only possible. Having both is nice, but very expensive. I would say, if anyone is wanting to kayak fish, to consider changing the equipment used. For example, a "one-step-heavier" action rod is almost needed in a kayak since you generally are not able to move like you can on a boat or shore. Even the angle of hook set is different and deserving of a heavier action rod than what is normally called for. I would also suggest a shorter handled net that can easily be reached so you are netting as you land. I've found that the majority of fish lost are due to poor hooksets caused by inherent issues with kayak fishing that anglers overlook or never think about.

All right , so here's my question from this greenhorn angler. I purchased a used kayak, went out for my maiden voyage for 6 hours, no real issues . But, I'm a big guy and I'm concerned because my kayak is a little less stable than I'd like. What are your thoughts on outriggers, are they useful? do they slow you down too much? I do not see a lot of KZread anglers with them which is a red flag as far as I'm concerned. Thoughts? Thanks for the vids! Tight lines 🎣

Hey Mark, you are right, I don't see too many people with outriggers and I imagine the reason would be that it's more difficult to turn and I would imagine fish would like to tangle you up in them whenever they get the chance. My recco from the research I have done on these would be this. 1: practice your deep water reentry just in case and two.. I think you will find that after a few more uses that you will dial it in. If you are going to tip your yak.. it's usually in one of few first outings as you are getting used to it. Stay safe out there brother.

Test how stable it is on a warm day, and you don’t care to get wet. For me I found my kayak was stable. I just had to balance better and not over adjust.

@@grazhopper5069 yeah basically I stood up next to the dock and I could stand in it but there's no way I'm standing in it in Open water 🤣. I have 12 hours logged no issues so I think I'm fine. It's a used kayak, it's my first kayak. The weight rating was a little off from the guy who sold it to me and I'm still learning the ropes. Overall I think once I adjust and start to really like it I'll upgrade later on. Thanks for the tips tight lines 🎣
Has for PFD of course you are required to have one on the kayak. I only wear mine in busy boating areas all other times I have its behind me. Here in Florida we have a lot of out of Towner's (Yankee doodles) that have never seen water or a wake zone never seen a boat until they rent one. They scream for fun control we scream for boat control 😂😂

If you have a Native Propel, they make a transom mount that replaces the Propel drive that you can mount a regular trolling motor to. So you don’t have to spend the money if a Bixpy or Torqueedo or NK180. You do lose the option to pedal.

I don’t carry an anchor because it’s extra weight, my yaks already to heavy.

I carry a drift sock instead of an anchor. Weighs way less & allows you to slow down your drift in windy conditions. Works well with an anchor trolley.

@@chrissalvemini4927 I will have to take a look at one. They use one on the charter boat I typically fish off of and they do work well.
I only wear my pfd if the water tells me it's a good idea. But I always have a wearable and throwable with me.
I notice you use a lot of spinning gear. What do you feel are the biggest advantages for you? I'm primarily a baitcaster guy.

The cooler aspect isn't uncommon. a lot of guys use livewell/cooler combos. For me its been just sun gear like legging socks gators/hoodies etc, nothing sucks more then being 1-2 miles off shore and getting absolutely scorched, but i guess this really depends on your area/climate.

Not into beer, but I'm amazed how so many opt for fish bags vs cooler for their catch! I have my cooler outfitted with rod holders. It keeps my rods well above the water - I very much dislike the built into the hull rod holders. I like throwing my fish on ice, but I absolutely am not into stinking fish bags (hard to clean).

@@michaell1665 Most fish bags i have seen are Hobie clones so they are bow mounted, allowing you to also use a cooler as a live well. that and they tend to be larger than your average cooler. But yeah not something that's really needed for lake fishing.

Wow, I have never in my life seen a Senko worked that fast! Hmmmmm... How about some kind of quickly accessible measuring device? Could even be a simple as a sticker that looks like a ruler that adheres to the side railing of your kayak. You do NOT want to get caught with a fish under the legal length, or in that 'catch & release only' zone for lakes with a slot limit. I had a walleye that was one inch short of legal(no measuring device on hand, so I just 'eyeballed' it) years ago back home in Oklahoma, and it got me a painful $150 ticket. Don't be *that* guy - like I was.

I was working it fast because I was fishing over dying grass and if I let it fall I was getting the ol grass bass lol.. Good call on the ruler. I just bought a sticker one that I adhered to my kayak about a month ago. I may do a quick short on it. $150.... ugh.. that is painful
Where i live. New South Wales Australia it is mandatory to wear a PFD when in a kayak. I don't mind wearing it especially fishing in Shark infested waters at night and the ocean.

Carrying an anchor is a safety thing. Anchors are required for powerboats as a safety item, so just because you have pedal drive it's no reason not to have an anchor.
