17. No Electricity/Water so Home Demolished - Misty Rainy Walk (February 2024)

Despite the rain I go for a walk on the mountainside where once a street of miners cottages were demolished because they had no electricity or water. The council thought it was cheaper to demolish the houses and relocate the residents to the nearby village.

The story of everyone in the village waiting up for news that the baby had been safely delivered made me cry. How poignant, as well, to hear of the way television changed the interactions between people when they moved into their new, wired houses. What a very profound effect from what could seem, at first glance, to be a minor change (going from not having a TV to having one). Lovely video, as usual. I'm in Canada, usually up late enough to catch your uploads just before bed and they always bring a sense of slowness and calm.

Here in west wales I was friends with an older lady who lived in a tiny fishing hamlet. She hated the slate roof on her home, as it rattied in the wind. She loved her old roof made of turf and bracken. In the 20s it blew off one night while she was in a long labour with her second son. Despite the gale force winds and rain, the neighbours rallied and the men all went out and cut a new turf roof from the hillside. They had it on the cottage in time for the delivery of a healthy boy. She loved that roof. Lovely lady, her grandson still lives in the house and still fishes.

Hi Sean, I am really enjoying your videos. At the moment it is 7pm here in Australia, it is 32 degC and watching you walk in the rain all rugged up makes me envious, we are having a hot and humid summer. Wales looks so interesting and I love your shops, the fact that you can get Sunday dinner delivered is marvellous and it looks very nice. Your butchers and green grocer look like something out of my childhood, your breakfast looked delicious the other day, all we have is a huge shopping centre which is soul less by comparison. No wonder you are happy and content, I feel very peaceful and relaxed watching your videos, you’re doing a great job. Carol🇦🇺

My father always told me it's already broken and as long as you don't take a hammer to it you're not going to break it more trying to fix it. The stories are really interesting and the views that you have in the rain are lovely. Occasionally I'll take the time and drive the 60 miles to the forest and the stress just falls from you when you finally get into the trees. You probably added 15 or more extra years to your life getting out of the city. Beautiful vlog here's to 50 more years of making vlogs😊

The story of the land and homes, reminds me of something we went through here. Cumberland island national seashore, off the coast of Georgia. Back in late 60s, my husbands mother bought land there, before it became what it is today. Many homes were there. No bridges, stores, mail, nothing. My husband built a home and then eminent domain came… many homes were condemned, including his. Many were bulldozed. He went on to represent himself and others. Some got a life estate. 1972 was the beginning of the park. When he died 11 years ago, I had 90 days to be gone.barging uhaul back and forth. It was a life estate for his life. Many went away in 2010, sone will keep reverting back as people die. It’s mostly vacant now, like our home sitting falling in. All the work we did on it, doesn’t increase your bottom line. Unless you go through something like having your home taken, it can be a difficult thing to understand. Yes, I’m not sure that was progress for those folks with televisions, etc. it’s interesting how there’s been attempts to develop the land through the years there… seems it would have been made into a park or conservancy. Thanks for sharing.

us Welsh are all children of the mountains, valleys and the sea. even on a dull day there is natural beauty all around, minutes from the front door. it was lovely to see the small birds almost following you up the track. it's worthwhile carrying a small container with some assorted bird food (seeds, suet pellets, peanuts, etc) to leave around and eventually the birds will get used to you and flock around when you leave some food for them 🙂 i hope you enjoyed your lunch 🙂

Interesting about the cottages. Similar story in my town Watford (near London). A row of cottages built next to a brick works had no gas, electricity and a well for water. The toilet was flushed using soft water. which is rainwater collected from the roof and stored in a tank. Mind you they were demolished just after the end of WW2. Same reason. Cheaper to rehouse the families than refurb the cottages.

Same for my Grandparents, in the east end of London. Cheaper to move them out into 'New Towns' - community all split up, which had seen them through everything. Both were born before the Great War, then young children during the Spanish flu pandemic, old enough to know it was serious but too young to do much other than learn to do errands. They got married just before WW2.

This was another wonderfully enjoyable Vlog Sean, to hear the history of the coal mines and the little cottages that eventually got knocked down was heartwarming to me. I think the mountain only allows certain things and it’s not allowing cowboys and what not 🙄 it’s so beautiful and magical that the mountain knows those gimmicks won’t do. How lovely as well to meet a viewer and to hear her story I personally love to hear those things. Sorry your iPad didn’t get fixed but it was like watching ASMR to me very relaxing I’d of sat and watch the whole thing if it was longer. Thank you for another relaxing time I find it’s helped me so much with my anxiety. I can’t wait for the next one whatever it involves. Hubby and I are ready with our cup of tea. My mother and all her family from Fernhill my two elder brothers were born there. They had electricity and gas. They were very basic cottages 2 up, 2 down, with an outside toilet. The cottages were owned by the NCB and they demolished them because they were in poor conditions. The Council had built new properties in Brynhenllan and Mt Libanus estate so most residents were moved there in the late 60's early.70's. My mother left in February 1970 and I was born in April 1970. Btw I'm hooked to your blogs 😊

The lovely lady you met, was very nice, ironically, over her shoulder was a power grid line that could make that street come back to life again. Very poignant walk and beautifully done, I’m really enjoying your company, I’m a Cat person and understand how you miss Rusty. I’ve rescued a few over the years and I occasionally shed tears or just smile at the personalities of each, I remember all of their names and faces (about 15 of them), frankly I would rather sleep with a cat in my bed than any other companion, they are very unconditional about their love, especially if they trust you. I love Dogs also but require more effort and don’t feel I can devote enough time to make them happier. Rusty lived a charmed, long and happy life because of you Sean, I let the tears of love flow as part of the gift I was given. Cheers from San Diego, California

Ah! I'm gently envious of you, Sean!! A delivered Sunday lunch from a local farm and a misty walk with the birds!! I think we all realize that projects and developments tend to spoil a place. I think of the many stories I've heard over the years of Americans moving to rural areas only to have an industrial or housing development built after a decade or two which spoiled the area. "Fern hill" must be a popular idea in Wales. Do you remember Dylan Thomas' "Fern Hill"? "Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green, The night above the dingle starry, Time let me hail and climb Golden in the heydays of his eyes, And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple towns...."

That was a lovely walk. Such a shame all the cottages were pulled down. I think they call that progress.😢. But lovely to meet one off the residents with all the story's to tell. Shame you couldn't fix your iPad.maybe time for a new one.

Thank you for this informative video. I live in the North East and the story was the same. Most villages had a coal mine with rows of houses all eventually demolished and residents rehoused on council estates.

Hello Sean, Lovely walk to the old coal mine and the place where people lived in what’s sounds like a wonderful community, so sad that people had to leave, there is a lot to be said for the old ways…. Great attempt at the iPad repair, nothing ventured nothing gained. See ya soon xx❤

Hi Sean. Just wondering if you knew the Barnes family from Treherbert. My great uncle Keith was a union rep in the mines, his wife worked in the Burberry factory and his daughter Jill was probably not too far off your age. Also a friend of mine called Glen White who’s about your age. He’s a Treherbert boy now living in Spain!!

White doesn’t ring a bell but Keith was in the gardening club with me and only last night I’ve transferred two videos of gardening club shows which Keith is in, I’ll be uploading them to my archive channel very soon. My archive channel is www.youtube.com/@sjcarchive

My uncle Dai Will worked at Fern hill and bore a prominent blue scar ( a consequence of a coal contaminated wound such as you related) His son, Young Dai, also worked there. I wonder if any of your viewers remember them?

Hello Sean. You need a waterproof hat I’d say . The wooly one must get soaked after a while . That was a good walk , even if it rained . And ' horizontal " rain is also frequent here in French Brittany .I hate it because it stings your face while you walk . Have a good day 😊

What they did with the old coal mines around here was turn it into the National Forest and create tourism/employment that way. Everyone loves a wood.

They have the zip wire in the one in North Wales near Snowdonia. There's also an adventure place in the caves underneath as well but I think something like that would spoil where you are. It suits where it is because it was slate mine & is surrounded by all the piles of slate etc. It would ruin the scenery there though I think.

It’s beautiful there. Felt a pull to that bleak spot. There were so called slums in London where my mother came from but they were not slums they just wanted to pull them down to build concrete eyesores

Progress is so destructive sometimes, such a shame when communities are destroyed by the push for home comforts they'd lived without for decades. Well done trying to fix that screen, not an easy job & at least you tried. Piddling down again this morning, have a lovely day Sean.

Oh drat! I so wanted the ipad to work again. Lovely episode. Certainly seems a shame that the houses were demolished but what a scandal to get the facts wrong on that history board. There should be a new board put there with true facts.
