17 Big Island, Hawaii Things to Do & Places to Go (family approved) | A 1-Week Tour Around Hawai’i

Start your Big Island, Hawaii planning here. In 1-week we found 17 things to do on Hawai’i that make us want to go back for more. Including our new favorite beach.
Henry, Hattie, Erica, and I had a blast on the Island of Hawai’i earlier this year. Here are our favorite 17 Things to Do on the Big Island, Hawaii in road trip format. Come along as we circumnavigate Hawaii to show you everything worth doing with a family or as a couple during your Hawai’i vacation.
We recommend you stay in Kailua-Kona for the best weather, beaches, and things to do around Hawai’i. Kailua-Kona is an ideal launching pad to do most of these activities. The island isn’t as big as one would think. We stayed for 7-days and we are looking forward to going back.
Check out more of our free #BigIsland and #Hawaii itineraries at the link below. All free and all full of fun.

I love your videos so informative! My husband and I and our two boys 10 and 5 are going in 2 weeks. I am so overwhelmed by planning because I have no clue how many things we can do in a day. I went to your website for the itineraries but they seem to have pricey activities on there. Do you happen to have itineraries for beaches, waterfalls, Waimea valley lookout, botanical gardens, zoo and scuba diving? Things that are not expensive? Thanks!

Really enjoyed this one as well. Stayed there for a month in 2018 when Kilauea popped her cork, absolutely mind blowing watching it erupt. Kona coffee, really exceptional but spend the extra to get the 100% not the 10% blend. You never mentioned going to Donkey Balls, that’s not a place to miss. The only bad memory of that trip was when my wife ended up in hospital, that was close on $30,000 for 4 days of hell. This island is definitely for the younger and fitter group, we found it a little to far to hike in some cases as we are both in our seventies!

Mahalo Paul! Thanks again for the comment! Rest assured when Kilauea starts erupting again, we will be on the first plane there. I saw it erupting in 2010, mind-blowing to see an island being made in front of your eyes. We will have to try Donkey Balls on our next visit, we say them but didn't make a stop. You two do a lot in Hawaii for being in your seventies.

@@vivienmartin7083 I lived there for about five years some time ago. At that time, no rental car company's allowed you to take the jeeps they rented for off-roading. You could void your contract if you went up to Mauna Kea. It was a liability issue so I can't see that going away. Almost all mainland car rentals are represented at the airport so call your local stores and inquire. I was lucky, my girlfriend had a 4x4 so we could go up country and to off road beaches. There is a lot see see if you stay on the local road system. There is one rule. If you have a trunk and leave your rental (in a low use area), put everything in the trunk, out of view. Locals can pick a rental out a mile away and if they see something in the car it will get broken into.

?????? Keaʻau and Pāhoa are two different areas here in lower Puna. Keaʻau only has one beach that is in a remote area that people have to hike to, is not always open or safe to swim depending on the time of year or weather. Cars get broken to all the time in the make shift parking area. Other than that there are only cliffs. Pāhoa only has Kehena beach which is also a clothing optional beach, Pohoiki is a large beach now, but too dangerous to swim- no one swims there. The newly made beach from the 2018 lava flow in Kapoho is Kapu and not legal to access.

Wow for anyone who wants to visit Hawaii I think the Big Island would be the last place on earth you would want to visit because there’s only one small pocket that’s worth it and that’s Kona, and when I say small, I mean small. And, you’re lucky if it’s a clear day and the Vog’s not restricting the sunshine. These two make it look nicer than it really is trust me! It rains constantly on the other side of the Island and there is nothing to do.. If you are looking for fun, adventure and great beautiful beaches go to any other Island! I had a blast!!!!

My first trip ever to Hawaii was this past March(2022). We went to the Hilo side of Big Island and was incredible. Yes it does rain significantly, but the plant life is incredibly lush because of it. It feels like you're in a rain forest. The waterfalls are super impressive when the rain water adds to them. Also, that side of the island has BLACK sand beaches. Yes Kona has pretty yellow beaches, but you can find that color in so many places in the world. If I want a nice golden sand beach, I'd rather just pay for a cheaper ticket to Florida. Black sand is far more unique. Big island also has wild horses in the Waipio valley. Unfortunately they closed the road down a week before our trip so we couldn't see Waipio, but I imagine it's stunning. The active volcano is also the crown gem. Very few places to see flowing lava.
