That’s super inspiring! Just curious as I’m in the process of trying to lose that kind of weight as well, did you focus on building strength and muscle first? Would the strategy of cutting big weight first while following a basic resistance program and then focusing on muscle building be reasonable too?

Man I wish they would have did this a year ago. I have been fortunate enough to lose ~45 pounds in 2021 and ~65 pounds in the last 18 months. Keys for me: 1) consistency in diet, keeping track of calorie intake and protein intake, 2) daily exercise (figure 75% lifting / 25% cardio), 3) enjoying life a bit along the way…keeps it consistent. You have to enjoy the process and let the little decisions compound over time.

On a maintenance kick until 2022 and I switched to a 3 day full body split, shooting for 25 lbs in 2022. I was am always going to make Halloween to New Years my maintenance and lighten up time.

My step 11 - find an activity/hobby you love and will do for years. People can lose weight by working out, but cannot assume, like you said, that folks will want or be able to workout like you did for years. But if you find an activity/hobby that you love and require you to practice & develop skill, like Jujitsu, climbing, road biking, boxing, surfing, woodworking - that will keep you from going back to sedimentary life and give you a passion, a thing you do and love and will get you up and keep you up

I watch KZread often and never comment on videos, but this one is too important not to. I’m getting married next month to a wonderful woman who has struggled for years with her weight. I was raised in a health-mindful home, I’m very into fitness, and have learned so much from MindPump the past few months. My fiancée wants me to help her on her fitness journey and I want to do so, but I’m struggling with how to get her on the right path as someone who has never been in her position. I hope and pray this comment is good enough to win the MAPS Starter program because it would mean so much to us and help us greatly along with the tips in this video. Thank you for all that y’all do, MindPump. God bless you & Merry Christmas!

First off, I'm not trying to win the contest; I already have MAPS Starter as well as the Prime Bundle. I just wanted to thank you guys for focusing on this subject, this is the podcast I really needed. At 41 years old, obese (about 40 pounds overweight), and not having "worked out" since PE class in school, this is basically where I am physically. I have already begun incorporating many of the steps you listed on my own and I wish I could articulate how important it was for me to hear that these steps I've taken were the right ones to help me not only reach my fitness goals but to sustain them long term. "Focus on strength, not the scale!" ~This has been everything to me! I may not lose weight super fast, but by focusing on strength I FEEL better than I have in years and I know the weight loss will follow in due time. This has made all the difference to me. I'm not sure where I'm going to go once I've completed the Starter program. I've looked at the other programs you offer and Anabolic appears to be where I'd want to go in terms of my preferred programming, but I'm not psychologically ready to walk into a gym for barbell access. I really want to focus on building my skill in the foundational strength exercises in Anabolic, I just wish I could do it from home with my dumbbells. lol!

My senior year of high school I was able to drop from 280 lbs to 240 in 4 months. I was able to do this because I was wrestling every day and resistance training outside of practice. I wasn’t trying to lose weight because I was wrestling heavyweight. I was eating over 5000 calories a day and was still loosing weight. After wrestling my goal was to gain weight back and gain it back with muscle because I was going to play football at a university. At the beginning of my freshman summer camp I weighed 260lbs. My coaches kept telling me I need to gain more weight and keep eating more. After freshman year I was 275. Sophomore year 285. Junior year 295. I maintained being 295 throughout summer camp and the football season. Now that I know this is my last season playing football I want to lose this weight again. I was 31 percent body fat the beginning of the season and I’m now down to 285 lbs. My only goal is to lose body fat and maintain muscle. This is a hard goal and I know it will take time. It is going to be different for me to lose weight and resistance train while not playing sports anymore. My physical activity will come from being in the gym and not on the field. I want to keep my lifting numbers and continue to build muscle. I squat 575 and bench 365. If you guys have any other recommendations outside of this video for me that would help me a lot. Im going to be graduating from my college after this winter semester with a bachelor in exercise science. I have learned a lot and I’m excited to apply what I have learned to my own fitness journey.

I lost 100+ pounds (in 5 months) a few years ago and I can't tell you how important it is to have a game plan for when you get it off. I yo-yo'd up and down since, and struggled, but finally, I've realized that your goals need to be short term and long term to keep the weight off. It's as hard, if not harder mentally, once the weight is off, to realize what's next.

I also had a breast reduction June 2020 & gained 20 lbs back. I just got my upper body strength back a few weeks ago. 42 years old and been obese since childhood, I'm 6 feet tall and so far I've lost 68lb since march 22nd 2021. Started at 310lb, 184lb lean and 40% body fat. I stumbled round in the dark for a while & made the mistake of following my Fitbit to work out my calories till I heard a recent episode ☹️ so glad I discovered you guys. The podcast is now like my bible, still got a way to go: currently 168lb lean, 70lb fat and 29.8% body fat. Not slamming the cardio, lifting as consistently as I can and reminding myself it's a marathon not a sprint. Not got an ideal scale weight my plan is to get to the lean mass I had when I was 310lb and 15% body fat so I can thank & apologise to the guy underneath for lugging all that extra weight round. Would never have got this far without you guys, thanking you just isn't enough 😁

@@TheStuckNorris I'm down about 90 lbs since last year. Having done some pretty intense research and speaking through experience, here's what I've learned: a lot of it depends on your own genetics, how old you are, and how long you've been overweight. If your parents seem to have good, elastic skin you've got some ideal genes for this. If you're young and heavy, your skin will have more elasticity than an older person that's been heavy for years. That being said, the second part to this is what you put in your body. You really are what you eat since your skin replenishes itself off that sustinence. If you're eating great, real food that's not processed your skin will have an advantage. As we get older, our bodies stop producing collagen. We need to add that back into our diet. Thrive Market has a great supplement along with Isopure. Use, use, use lotion! And exfoliate your skin once a week (there are great sugar scrubs available). Also drink tons of water with minerals and electrolytes (and salt if you're on keto) Good luck!

I am not one to share my story in a public (mostly because I’m scared to jinx myself)…I lost over 80lbs about 10 years ago and have kept it off. I was always a heavy person and tried every diet under the sun before I graduated high school. I was a very active kid (playing varsity football and other sports in high school) and started lifting when I was in 7th grade but was still overweight. After undergrad I really focused on myself. I learned the long and hard way a lot of what you guys talk about and I am here to say it does work (started listening to you about a year ago). Small changes to your lifestyle make a huge difference and it snowballs (along with your point about sugary drinks I found condiments was another “hidden” high calorie area…mayo, BBQ sauce, ranch, etc.). One thing I think is miscommunicated in the fitness realm of weight loss is that only after you lose 100lbs or whatever your goal is will you now feel accomplished or better. That is completely and utterly wrong. Losing the first 10lbs (the right way) feels amazing…like you always say “listen to your body” and “stay present”. The weight loss journey can be extremely fulfilling. Losing that much weight shouldn’t be quick because you need to emotionally, physically, spiritually, and mentally heal from the abuses your body and mind has taken due to being heavy. My journey to losing over 80lbs took about a year and the emotional, mental, and spiritual healing is still a work in progress. I love the podcast!

I lost 100 pounds this year doing a combo of extreme calorie restriction, keto/fasting, and am now currently doing a ppl split 6 days a week at the gym that has considerably morphed the shape of my physique in the past 3 months of training. I am very excited to see what a year of strength training will look like, but for now the benefits of being able to eat more freely in terms of carbs is the shit. Also I reversed my type 2 diabetes .... so that’s good shit too

I have been tracking several health habits for the past 6 months. My biggest take aways from your video is to pick another small habit and be disciplined to implement it. Chick fil a was calling my name one day and that was the end of that diet 😂… But going to therapy for my relationship with food has been one of the greatest tools to changing my life… That lady changed my life! This year we set a goal to start living and loving myself again. I’ve done so many things this year I was afraid to do because of my weight. Attended shows (I was afraid of little seats, most seats were little but I still did it), baseball games, soccer games, bought stylish clothes (hard to find wearing a 5x), travelled by airplane (God bless those ppl seating beside me lol), even went freaking hiking a few times! Actually my profile picture is me hiking at the beginning of this year. I got all 400 pounds of myself up and down a hiking trail!!! I definitely died a few times but man did that feel good accomplishing that! Talks like these help me see I’m on the right track to success!!! Thanks so much guys!!

Was 397 @ 5’11” at my heaviest last summer and got gastric bypass in November of 2020 then increasing my activity gradually: first by walking/hiking, then cardio like a recumbent bike, then just a haphazard non programmed resistance training. Today I’m 210, finished my first week MAPS Anabolic and I am seeing some strength gains in the process. It’s really a Lot of keeping that expectation that everything else will come with time and try to love the process. The key for me being successful is wanting to not be that statistic of gaining it back so starting therapy and meeting with my required dietician have been very beneficial and key for me.

So I do keep a couple of options for my kids like crackers or fruit snacks. Other than that we buy a lot of fruit, cheese sticks, Greek yogurt, etc for them. They’re allowed the snack crackers or “less healthy options” every so often but I’ve taught them that just because they want a snack they aren’t necessarily hungry if they won’t take the healthier option from being ACTUALLY hungry. Being realistic as a parent is important, but it’s not an excuse to not set a good healthy example for children.

I was assaulted at work in 2016 and suffered a TBI and had brain surgery to save my life. Over the next 4 years I was almost bed ridden 20 hours a day. I went up to 296 pounds I am 6'1' and probably should be 180 pounds . Now I can walk good again and I am down to 255 pounds. I did the crash diet thing and lost a lot of weight and fast but was miserable. I got down to 225 pounds but was desperate and fell hard at that point and went right back up to 255 almost over night. Now I am in the gym three days a week doing full body workouts and eating whole foods. I don't care if it takes me two years to lose the rest of this weight. I am already feeling so much better and so much more active. For me even at 255 I am already winning. I have been doing what you guys show us for two months and it feels great and even the squats are easier :)

I bought a ½ gallon water bottle 3 weeks ago just to make fun of my boss who is a fitness fanatic and has the same bottle. Since then I've only been drinking from that water at work and I don't even want a soda anymore. It's not satisfying now. I just want water. It's crazy. I've have always been a soda person. I've lost 5 lbs over the last 3 week just drinking water. I'm amazed at what I'm seeing change in my life from what started as a joke. You guys rock! Drink more water.

I am a bit late - and already subscribed etc. Unfortunately I have around 55kg to lose (I'm in New Zealand, so metric) and I am 5"1. At 40 I am feeling sore every morning, my knees hurt when I walk and after walking up a flight of stairs I'm struggling to breathe. I am feeling overwhelmed right now but also conscious that I need to do something. I know I'm too late for the competition but it feels good to say it all out loud 🤷 thank you for making your content - it has been a steep learning curve thus far!

I lost about 70 pounds since July/August of 2020. I gained about 8 back, but I'm back on the cut and grind. I don't know if I want to get to 100 pounds total, but I have at least 20 to lose, so the total lost should be 80 to 100. A lot of that depends on how much muscle I gain. I'm going to be switching from bar calisthenics to barbell, dumbell and bands for the winter. I'm looking for a program now. I don't belong to a gym, but I have supplies at home. I've been using the calisthenics parks and children's playgrounds. Another key point is that while it's like OMG 2 years to lose the weight, in about 4 or 5 months I was already looking and feeling a ton better just having dropped the first 20 to 30 pounds. I love you guys and I play your episodes when I'm getting ready in the morning everyday and I hope that will help keep me on track.

I have lost and found more weight than I can keep track of. Once I hit my 30's I really started to care. SW was 250ish lbs lowest I got was 216 (5 foot tall). I thought I was on track. Then 2020 hit. As a hair dresser I stand up and move through the day a lot so I was able to keep off some of what I originally lost even though I picked up some of my old habits. But when 2020 hit and the salon was mandated closed for so long I again found most of what I lost. I have not yet been motivated to focuses on my health in the last year, 2021 I was trying to build back my career. I read The Miracle Morning after the Hal Elrod episode I am ready to work hard again. MAPS would really help, but I CAN do this regardless.

I am on my 145 days and lost 56 lbs. Still trying to lose 64 more lbs. It's grinding experience everyday. I eat 1800-2000 calories and cut out all fast food minus diet soda. I spend like 3 hours a day running, biking, ellipticaling and lifting weight. I take break every 3-4 days.. I pushing to my limit and yet result is coming very slow. I could probably have lost more if I cut my calories to like 1300ish and doing more cardio but I am afraid of killing my metabolism and have a lot of lose skins after losing 100+ lbs so I try to eat more doing around 4 hours of lifting per week.

Hey guys, I finished college football about a year ago. I was an offensive lineman and I’m still hanging around 330 lbs and looking to drop some weight. I’ve had a hard time in the gym keeping a consistent routine. I go 4-5 times/week but some days I just feel like I’m not accomplishing much. I’m wondering which MAPS program do you think would help me drop some weight? And it’s taken about 6-7 months but I finally have a healthy relationship with food which is something I never had as a collegiate athlete. Thanks in advance!

It’s funny. I’ve had a lot of weight to lose. In 18 months I’ve lost about half of it. But in my mental space I never viewed myself as overweight. It’s hard to explain, but though I didn’t deny the facts, I didn’t absorb them as my identity. Perhaps it helps that I’ve always been active in one way or another. Anyway, just an odd realization for me just now.

I thought I had about 50 lbs to lose when I started, as I lost about 40 lbs - I realized that I should lose more. I had forgotten that 175 lbs was once the highest weight I used to allow myself to be. So it shouldn’t have been my target. But I think if I had started at 225 thinking I need to go to 155 - I would not have even began. I’ve only been walking to lose the weight. First few months it was 10000 steps average. Then I went up to 6 miles a day and now I do 8 miles. If I could swim I’d just do that and probably wouldn’t take that much time. And I ve also been eating home cooked food I’ve always eaten. Just no takeout. Or junk. I lose about a lb and a half a week this way. But I’m starting to do weight training. I’ve trained on and off for a few years but not for a while.

So am I set up for failure with what I've done? I've been intermittent fasting with a 16-8 protocol for several weeks. Did a 72 hour fast. It's really helped fix my relationship with food. Now I'm planning on OMAD and working out. I truly believe I can sustain 18-6 the rest of my life, but I feel like my mindset of needing to see fast initial results to stay focused needs OMAD for the first month or so of my journey.

If people don't want to just drink water, tell them to get things like Vitamin Water, Sparkling Ice, komboucha, tea (2 teaspoons or less of sugar), sometimes kefir or chocolate milk because they have protein. At least those are much better on calories, or come with benefits like probiotics and/or protein. Also, water is cheaper. I actually switched to more water years ago, just to save money.
