There's nothing finer than looking around other people's narrowboats so join me on this quest to find another narrowboat (as mentioned a couple of vlogs ago). Or not, as the case may be.

As a closet Canal boatist I've been learning ever since you first started your Journey afloat studying vlogs and reading about Narrowboats. That the art of choosing a boat is a difficult decision and I love trips back to the Uk, often making a pilgrimage in search of my ideal boat. I'm still in turmoil over things I think I want and compromises I may make. Looking forward to the end of May to torture myself again at Crick. No doubt you'll be there in disguise.

One construction site I was on as a lad had a water pump powered by an old Gardener engine, it was crank handle start but the fly wheel made it easy. I started the pump one day and went off to do other jobs, when I returned the tanks were overflowing and the foreman was sitting on a drum having a smoke. I thought he was going to tell me off, but when I went to stop the engine, he told me to leave it running until he had finished his cigarette, he said it reminded him of his youth. On a road trip in Germany I stopped at a service station and came upon a group of cruiser motorcycles, the big Harleys/Hondas with huge panniers and windscreens. When the guys started up you could handle hear the Hondas, one chap turned on his inbuilt cassette deck and the sounds of an old Peters engine starting was blasted out. Well all us onlookers just burst out in laughter to the. Chug Chug Chug Chug Chug. It was magic. So why not buy a boat with a modern engine and have speakers blasting the Chug Chug Chug.

I went shopping for my first boat with a similar checklist; Cruiser, reverse layout, etc. I visited quite a few boats, but none really 'felt right', despite ticking all the boxes. Then a boat came up that was 5 minutes away from where I was staying (would be rude not to have a nosey). It was nothing like what I wanted in my head, but I instantly fell in love with it..... I got the keys to it 2 days ago and I can't stop grinning!

As a single-hander, I agree with pretty much all you want in a replacement boat. (I say replacement rather than new in anticipation of what I will say later.) For travelling, I think cassette is a no-brainer. And a reverse layout I would die for... ...BUT... I think you're mad wanting a cruiser stern. They're bl&&dy cold in both windy and cold weather. On my semi-trad I am able to steer from in the warm in front of the counter and above the *nice warm* engine. And if it's raining I have an umbrella mount, so I don't have to hold a brolly. Re replacement: it seems to me that for the amount of money you anticipate spending (and your experience) you could (almost) design and have built a boat to your desired specification... and your Vandemonium construction/conversion skills would help to keep the cost down. Good luck - I enjoy your videos as they echo quite a bit of what I've been through. I hope to meet you whilst chugging sometime.

Semi-trad, Saloon up front (stove is a must for that classic narrow boat feel) Speaking of classic I think that 2LW sound would be extremely relaxing and I REALLY like offset engines like that. That seems to be a very special addition to boats that have the bow and stern in the same time zone and are not tugs. Weather not allowing you outside? NP. Put on some music and dress up and polish that engine. I really like how it was just modern enough to fire right up and not spend 30 mins oiling up the engine linkages, the floor, the walls, your clothes and the cat.

Mind you I do agree completely with what you said about the boats, one ticks the boxes and the other is love at first(internet)sight. If I was listening, instead of watching, I would have said yuck to the cherry-wood. But I like it. I suspect I would be as you describe, go with a list and buy something entirely different. And now Rugby boat sales keeps appearing in my feed.

David, if I owned a mooring marina on the canal, my first step would be to hire you as a salesman for, you guessed it; narrowboats. After cruising this season on through, when getting ready to winter out and sell the boat, why not apply for a sales position. Your reward in doing so would be very advantageous. You do understand my meaning, surely!

Hi David, Greetings from narrowboat Caernarfon! Been watching your vlogs with interest & pleasure over the last three years. Personally on our fourth boat now, & have seen your wish list for your next boat. Would just say to keep cabin breaches to a minimum. Houdini hatches, extra side hatches...... so seemingly ideal in terms of light and airiness, but realistically, any breach in the cabin brings issues in terms of water intake. Seriously would not recommend it, especially Houdini hatches. We have two in our galley, plus additional side-opening hatches rear, port-side to our boat, in addition to the hatches both sides in our saloon. All have water intake issues and have caused serious damage to the wood lining. Bottom line is that water always finds its way inwards with any breach in the cabin, & will cause problems. All the best, Claire.

That was a most interesting video thank you. There are no definitive answers to the purchasing dilemma and you have to be strong to remain objective when assessing around your identifies key criteria. It is probably best though not to tempt fate (and save time) and only visit boats that tick your criteria. A good meme for how well a boat has been looked after is to examine the engine and the engine spaces. If the engine looks grotty, or if there is rust or free standing water (or oil) it tells you the sort of effort and priority the owner accords to maintenance and husbandry of the whole boat. So much so - examine the engine space first and if you are not impressed go no further and walk away.

Great video thanks. Definitely the right decision to head out for your cruise on the cut and then revisit acquiring another boat for the later part of the year. Good chance to have a ponder about what you want in your next boat whilst pottering along in the country side at walking pace, and you can spy for other boats for sale along the way too!

G’day David Greetings from Tasmania that last boat was beautiful inside I loved the woodwork in her and the general fit out and as for the engine a beautiful Gardener, big company even making loco engines but I can understand that it just didn’t fit the bill. Nice to see you again David regards John
