Lost another one: Doug Ingle, who co-founded the heavy rock band Iron Butterfly and was the singer and organist on songs including their signature hit, “In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida,” died Friday at age 78. He was the last surviving member of the classic lineup from the late 1960s. Most of Iron Butterfly’s success came with the 17-minute FM radio smash “In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida.” The 1968 sophomore album named after the hit single spent 81 weeks in the top 10 in the U.S.; for a while it stood as the bestselling album in Atlantic Records’ history. The LP went on to be certified quadruple-platinum. Ingle’s family announced the passing on social media and did not give a cause of death. “It’s with a heavy heart & great sadness to announce the passing of my Father Doug Ingle,” posted Doug Ingle Jr. “Dad passed away peacefully this evening in the presence of family. Thank You Dad for being a father, teacher and friend. Cherished loving memories I will carry the rest of my days moving forward in this journey of life. Love you Dad.” Ingle was the last surviving member of the original lineup, which was formed in San Diego in 1966, and also the only survivor of the so-called classic edition of the group that recorded “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” two years later, at which point the band had undergone a total turnover except for him. An edit of “In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida” that lasted only two minutes and 52 seconds went up the charts to land at No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100, although that is little indication of just how thoroughly the song infiltrated the culture. It was the 17-minute album track that became legendary - and something of an affectionate running joke in rock circles, as either a symbol of excessive length or just something a late-night FM disc jockey could put a needle down on for a smoking or bathroom break.

Add another to the memorial list, “John Koerner, Bluesman Who Inspired a Young Bob Dylan, Dies at 85... A spindly guitarist nicknamed Spider, Mr. Koerner was Mr. Dylan’s first friend in the scruffy world of Minneapolis bohemia where he learned about folk music…On a self-made seven-string guitar and also on a 12-string - like his idol, Lead Belly - Mr. Koerner (pronounced KER-ner) yowled and foot-stomped his way through songs about gold miners and frogs who went a-courtin’…NYT 5/26/24

This guy is the real deal and the tragedy is that most of us in this community have never heard of him. The quality of the music, songwriting, playing, production and singing does not make hits. I don’t know what Bob looks like (it shouldn’t matter, but it does). ‘Bob Malone’ on a marquee or an album cover sounds like a good name for a high school team coach. Back in the day he would’ve had a nickname with that voice: Smokey Malone. He would be wearing a fedora and shades, and hyped in that echelon with the aforementioned legends, Tom Waits, Randy Newman and Leon Russell. Love these tracks to pieces! 🎶❤️🎶

🎉🎉🎂🎂. To Mr. Wachtel!!! Was not expecting a mind blowing experience here about the nature of life (?), but while waiting for dinner to heat (we watch these while we eat), I had just googled Charlie Colin ( a founding member of Train who slipped in the shower and died two days ago). And after watching this--since Mark Brooks had not done it for me 😖-- I googled Bob Malone. It turns out that these two fellows are virtually exactly the same age and both went to Berklee School of Music (no idea if they knew one another, but they would have been in the same space at the same time). I never did cotton to that organ Dad got me in elementary school, but I will most def be double checking my footing in the bathtub.

Super Size Me director Morgan Spurlock settled a divorce with estranged wife Sara Bernstein three months before his death. Spurlock, who died in May at the age of 53, married Bernstein in 2016 shortly before they welcomed son Kallen, now 8. Bernstein filed for divorce five years later in March 2021. Spurlock and Bernstein reached a settlement in February of this year, and a proposed judgment was issued within weeks. Per the court records obtained by Us Weekly, a letter had been filed in court earlier this month. There have not been further updates about finalizing the case. Us has reached out to lawyers for both parties for comment. "It’s heartbreaking news. I know Morgan as a wonderful person to work for and was very appreciative of his family and devoted to the health and wellbeing of his children," Spurlock's attorney Randi L. Karmel told Us in a statement. "My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. He was very young and has two young children. They amicably settled all issues between them prior to his death." Inside ‘Super Size Me’ Director Morgan Spurlock’s Complicated Legacy Following His Death News broke on Friday, May 24, that Spurlock had died one day earlier following a cancer battle. “It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan,” the director’s brother Craig Spurlock said in a statement. “Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.” Morgan is survived by his parents, two brothers and his two sons. In addition to Kallen, Morgan shared Laken, 17, with ex-wife Alexandra Jamieson. (In the May obituary, Bernstein and Jamieson are both listed as Morgan’s “former spouses.”) Morgan and Jamieson, a vegan chef, started dating in 2002. She appeared in Super Size Me, supporting Morgan’s 30-day experiment of eating nothing but McDonald’s meals. Morgan and Jamieson wed in 2006 and separated five years later. Celebrity Deaths of 2024: Stars We Lost This Year “I was there with him and we were in a relationship for many years. We were very comfortable with each other,” Jamieson said during a 2013 interview for the Good Life Project about costarring with Morgan in the Oscar-nominated documentary. “[It] was helpful to be there with your partner.” She continued, "We ended up making another TV show called 30 Days after Super Size Me, which I was in a couple of episodes with him. We went and lived on minimum wage for a month and it was really a reality show that explored social issues in a way that Super Size Me did. It was hard on the relationship, not only are you going through a challenging experiment but you have to get up at 4:30 [in the morning] because the cameras are coming over. It’s just a very unrealistic environment, in which to communicate and be intimate with somebody."

‘…The rising cost of homeowner’s insurance is now one of the most prominent symptoms of the climate crisis in the US. Major carriers such as State Farm and Allstate have pulled back from offering fire insurance in California, dropping thousands of homeowners from their books, and dozens of small insurance companies have collapsed or fled from Florida and Louisiana following recent large hurricanes. The problem is fast becoming a crisis that stretches far beyond the nation’s coastal states. That’s owing to another, less-talked-about disaster that has wreaked havoc on states in the midwest and the Great Plains, causing billions of dollars in damage. In response, insurers have raised premiums higher than ever and dropped customers even in inland states such as Iowa. These so-called “severe-convective storms” are large and powerful thunderstorms that form and disappear within a few hours or days, often spinning off hailstorms and tornadoes as they shoot across the flat expanses of the central United States. The insurance industry refers to these storms as “secondary perils” - the other term of art is “kitty cats”, a reference to their being smaller than big natural catastrophes, or “nat cats”. Five people dead and at least 35 injured as tornadoes rip through Iowa But the damage from these secondary perils has begun to add up. Losses from severe convective storms increased by about 9% every year between 1989 and 2022, according to the insurance firm Aon…’ The Guardian or 'Keep moving, nothing to see here' ⚠

Very nice writing! I like his voicing on different songs. Another discovery I'd never of know about if not for your posting!

Thank you so much Lee! This made my week! We must play together again!
