Thanks, Randy, I realized after I got this one and took it apart, that it would be pretty easy to make. I look forward to seeing what you do.

I have a 1993 Enco 100-1597 with a 9" x 49" table. It's basically the same machine as yours. I also hated it every time I needed to use the quill depth adjustment. On mine, the diameter difference of the adjusting barrel (1.375 originally, 1.515" for the quick release) did cause a problem. In fact, I bought the new adjuster about 25 years ago and it wouldn't fit so I set it aside. A few days ago I finally got fed up enough and wasn't in the middle of a job that required the mill so I decided to make it fit one way or the other. I ended up taking a Dremal with a grinding wheel and carefully removed about 1/8" from the head casting wherever it interfered with the stop. Problem solved. I have a similar Mitutoyo quill kit. With it installed, the spring for the button on the adjustable stop was difficult to squeeze because the depth scale was in the way and you couldn't squeeze it between two fingers. I replaced the spring with a lighter one and also made a Delrin cylinder for the spring to fit into so that the button was stopped from going in far enough to drag on the screw when it was depressed.

I’m using the type that clamps on like a clothespin. The type that you are using I think allows for more precision. Nice upgrade to the mill. Cheers from West Virginia.

Maybe if you have it off again , turn a bit of the OD away so the push button sticks out further . I was thinking about going the other way , with a set of spacer tubes instead . It will be interesting to see how repeatable the stops are with those speed nuts . Cheers .

Thanks Max, I really appreciate the stream of useful ideas and tips I get from your channel. Based on a small test I did with the Mitutoyo DRO on the quill, the stop was repeatable to 0.0005".

Interesting feedback. The spring in mine is pretty tight as well. I wonder if easing up the tension will make the stop slip or wobble. Let me know.

@@DudleyToolwright Maybe just a longer button... or even a thumb screw type handle hanging off of the button - unless you need it to spin. It looks like it tries to turn when you depress the button. Just some very general bainstorm

  • @dizzolve

@@DudleyToolwright Here's an idea. It looks like clearance is 0 when I look at the thumbnail to this video. What if you take it off and disassemble... put the main body in the lathe and reduce everywhere it's not knurled(the numbered and indexed area) to expose part of the button ..... then you can shape whatever of the button sticks out ~so it can be pinched AND pushed. That might work for me

Many of the common verbal abbreviations are strange like that. Typically when I hear people talk about tenths, I think they are talking about 1/10,000ths. Go figure.

Manhattan Supply has been busy putting all of it’s competition out of business or buying them up (Enco) and charging higher and higher prices because of it. I never buy anything from them. Virtually 99% of what they sell can be found elsewhere at significantly lower prices with a little searching.

Thanks for the tip. I always watch my own videos. It typically takes a few hours to edit a video. I realized when I was editing this video that some of the footage was poor. I thought the image stabilization would help, but it was inadequate. Of course, there is no helping poorly framed shots.
