I love these older homes. The craftsmanship and design surpasses the modern ones. Thank you for sharing your home and expertise.

Thank you for posting and doing this video. I am trying to find an old Japanese House to procure on the outskirts of Tokyo, near Hachioji.

Old Japanese houses are fine save the traditional Japanese toilets which are none but a curse. You may wish to renew your tatamis once in a while, which is a must for an owner of this sort of houses. It would be a challenge to cover 17 rooms, though.

So this is what it would be like if Richard Dean Anderson moved to Japan before he became an actor.

Why do Japanese typically lay bricks or cement blocks in a straight grid with vertical grout lines aligned (29:35), rather than basket-weave style? I like the look, but doesn't that make for a weaker wall?

The house is a true gem. Characteristics remind me of older homes in this part o the American south. You are so correct with the bedroom verses value in the United States. With banking set up to support this model, new houses are build to match the loans that are available. I wonder if the changes in Japan are more of a reflection of banking/loan systems as well? Ah, to have a well inside is so rare, I am envious.

Living as a gaijin in Japan, I can empathize with how many people want to come to my house, but never invite me to theirs. It gets tiresome.
