I mean I heard that the original owners gave him away because he had cancer. I don’t know if that’s true or not but if it is, that was probably the best thing to do. They most likely didn’t have enough money to care for him. Keeping him would’ve just led to him slowly deteriorating from the cancer.

We adopted a 13 year old dachshund that was horribly treated. Five broken teeth. Nails too long to walk. In pain all the time. He passed from a blood clot while in dental surgery. We gave him the best five weeks of his life and I will never forget the love he had and will never forget him. RIP my beloved Astro. Small dog, big heart.

There's a very, very good reason the brightest star in the evening sky is in the Great Dog, Canis Major, constellation. It's ancient technology. By having a dog you are or you become aware of everything they're aware of. They unfortunately do not live long enough. I've had about a dozen of them, til death do we part. I can not abandon love, and they are pure unconditional bundles of love. No dog I've ever had is anything like any dogs I've had before too. They all possess their own unique personalities... But it's always a love story. I can not imagine abandoning my dog. I've had him boarded for just a few days once. He shuts down. Stops, won't eat. I can not bring myself to break an innocent heart that has brought me comfort and joy for years upon years. It's tough when they start going downhill, but it's worth every second even still.

Wow, the way he suddenly had the energy and confidence to run is, to me, a testament to a dog's need for love. He had been just waiting it out at the shelter until he died, but once there was someone and something to live for he transformed. I know this is just one dog out of literally millions in his situation, but it does me good to think that this boy's last time was spent with caring and affectionate people.

@@nmc1859 What you did is a truly selfless act for the benefit of your dog. Thanks to you, she learned what love was and what home was. These days, with coronavirus showing everyone's real nature it is horrible to hear what (some) young people think of seniors, especially in the context of limiting your activities and wants for the good of the community. There was a shift somewhere, from the most valued and respected people in a family or tribe, the elderly have become a burden to get rid of, a buzzkill preventing you from organizing big parties. It's a relief that there are still people that do not see age as a barrier to love.

Like my grandfather used to tell me, "When getting a pet, no matter what it is whether it has a breed or not, it's considered a family member, so take care of it from the beginning up until it's last moments". I've lost 4 pets so far, all of them lived for more than 15years, I was there when they were just puppies and kittens and I was also there when one by one they left us. Please love them like your children or siblings, because you're all that they have and don't let them down.

The great thing about our dogs is that they can share their love without it getting any smaller. Few people can do that too. Many years ago I took a dog from a very insecure family and passed it on afterwards. He was only with me for a short time. After that I saw him less often, sometimes only once a year. He always remembered me and the fact that I took him out of the unfortunate situation back then. His friendship was huge. And he loved his new dad dearly. I think he remembers Zach, a good memory without despair, just good.

He hissed when I came near him because he was so traumatized from being given pain medication. I knew at that point forcing him to live like that was not for his benefit. It was for me. I stayed with him when the euthanized him. He was so calm while they did it, I knew he was ready. He looked so peaceful afterwards, I knew it was the right decision.

It breaks my heart when people dump their senior dogs. Adopting a dog is for life, not just when they are young. You need to love them through the weak bladders, bad stomachs, arthritis, and everything else that old age throws at them. You are their entire world, their home and their hearts. Your dog will love you to their last breath, you owe it to them to love them until theirs. 💔💔

@@hello-up1fo That is a very different situation and not what I described. "Not just when they are young." Many people mindlessly adopt dogs without taking cost into account. I wanted a dog for years before I adopted mine, but waited until I was in a better financial position. I also pay for health insurance for him, in case he ever has big expensive medical issues. Loosing a job/home/ or medical condition absolutely makes sense to give your dog to people who could help. However, many people adopt and when the dog is simply not as much fun or has normal aging problems they dump the dog. some of them go out and then adopt puppies again because they are cute and fun. I am specifically talking about those who want a pup only when it is convenient.

We created the dog. They are mankind's unconditional responsibility. Some of them can't even literally survive without us. We are their stewards. We created them to depend upon us. Any dog which isn't properly cared for is a betrayal of the implied contract we made with dogs when they joined us on the human journey. The contract: we'll take care of you and you will serve us and be our companions. We should love and care for dogs more than most people because most people don't depend on us like dogs do. During the course of pandemic, all three of my little dogs passed from old age, 16YO, 18YO & 20YO+. Left me broken-hearted, big time. Six weeks ago, I adopted an 11YO shepherd mix from a local shelter. He'd been left there b/c of "medical problems" (he has autoimmune disorder & so do I), adopted & returned, languished in shelter a long time. I heard his story over the phone & said I wanted him sight unseen, told my friends "I'm letting God choose my next dog. When the shelter volunteer brought him out, I thought, "Oh Lord, what have we done?" Dog was scruffy, aloof, dull coat, 55 lb. & obese, listless, ignored humans, pulled hard on his leash: a singularly unappealing animal who looked like a junkyard rescue dog on "Animal Cops Houston." He perked up once he was in the car, as if he knew he was leaving dog prison. Within 24 hours, he'd developed a PASSION for being brushed. Over several days, I pulled GALLONS of dead hair & dry skin off my new dog. Within a week of brushing & grain-free diet, he was losing weight & gleaming like a wet seal. Now, 6 weeks later, he sits, waits at the door instead of rushing ahead when we go for walks, comes when called, walks quietly by my side on the leash, brings his toy so we can play fetch, smiles, has lost weight, acts silly sometimes, has learned to howl when I howl, crawls on his tummy when I say "bang," etc. His name is now Edward (his dignity demanded a dignified name) & he's so good, people think he was "well trained" before I got him. Nope! He's just a grateful & brilliant dog who loves to love & learn. However long Edward remains here on this earth, I'll do my very best to make his life wonderful. ADOPT A SENIOR DOG! THEY'RE WONDERFUL!
