One of the greatest matches in CTWC history! With commentary by James Chen and Chris Tang.
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 9000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 30 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com

I remember the day Jonas passed away. Joseph broke down crying on his Twitch live-stream on that day. Joseph seriously admired Jonas and was probably a role model as well that motivated Joseph to be the best. Joseph is now a 2-time champion. He won in 2019, and of course 2018 against Jonas.

Neubauer did a sensational career with CTWC. Of course all of us wanted to keep this seven-time world champion more longer with us, but unfortunately life is sometimes very crude. But remember, Jonas left behind a huge legacy. His attitude, his kindness, and his spirit is the major things that everyone, who keeps himself/herself a good Tetris player, should take an example from Jonas, that's the way to do it. Rest in peace, legend, may you won an every Tetris battle above the clouds!

What's fascinating about this to me is how much higher the skill level is now on top. The techniques that the younger players are using now just blow away the old style that Jonas is using. It's nuts how easily they transition into the 30s now, versus 5 years ago. The "kill screen" is no longer the kill screen with some of these younger players.

Came here looking for this comment. If only Jonas were still around to learn rolling (thus be able to play levels 30+) to couple with his excellent stacking skills! It would've be so interesting to see. Jonas rlly tends to score better in levels until a little over 20.

I feel glad I got to watch Tetris evolve so much in such a short time, but also sad that Jonas never got to see how far it got too. You will never be forgotten for everything you contributed to the game and the wonderful community surrounding it
Just showed this to some of my high school math classes and told them about the move to Pasadena for the world championships! A lot of them were glued to the action! Tetris for Jonas
Me at the beginning: *whats so interesting about this?* Me after game 2: *YOOOOOOOOO*
Look at Jonas in game 3, as soon as he tops out he's incredebly mad, mad at himself for failing at playing as good as he could... and than he looks at Joseph's screen and he starts smiling, he's not worried that the guy will or not win the game, it doesn't make a difference anymore because he was mad about his bad playing, not about the title. He smiles because Joseph is playing incredible tetris, aggressive and not safe in any way, just going for it, never taking compromises with triples, risking it all. He smiles because he's seeing someone who's extremely good, and he admires him. That's sportsmanship.

What a graceful, graceful runner-up speech. That was just awesome. I would say some world leaders have some class to learn from both of these guys, but we all know that, really, they probably wouldn't be able to.

Ive been playing Tetris just for fun and boredom and this randomly came into my recommendations LOL. AWSOME players, sad to see Jonas has passed but wow, they are both amazing.
Man this is one of the greatest classic matches out there. New school vs old school, Joseph sparking a new era of possibility, taking down the GOAT with a new style. Opening the door to a new wave of players while the old had to adapt and learn. Tetris really took off and blew up after this match. Both Joseph and Jonas played a large roll in it. Jonas being the GOAT and huge ambassador to the game, mixed in with this prodigy player coming out of nowhere giving new light to a new style of play. It was just a recipe that was destined to take Tetris to a new level of popularity and gameplay. Mad respect to both of them, this match was significant to the game of Tetris, a great classic
