Спорт

Next in the BBR #BinoWars Series, I take a close look at the relative strengths and weaknesses between the two high power 15x56 and 18x56 binoculars to discover which is best for uses like general long-distance observation, wildlife and hunting down here on earth as well as astronomy.

In this video, I go over the main differences in both the physical aspects and the optical performance of a 15x56 vs 18x56 binocular which in turn should help you to decide which of these two specific configurations is best suited for your specific needs.
In this video:
Physical Differences: Size & Weight
Optical Differences
15x or 18x Magnification
The whole purpose of using a binocular that magnifies the image is to provide you with a better view of distant objects. So it stands to reason that most people will assume that the more powerful a binocular is, the better.... but there is more to this!
Light Gathering
As both 15x56 and 18x56 binoculars have 56mm objective lenses and assuming they use the same quality glass and coatings, the light-gathering ability between the two will be the same, however like the magnification, there is more to this story!
Price Differences - Did you know 18x56 binoculars are often more expensive than the equivalent 15x56 binocular?
Conclusions - 15x56 or 18x56, Which is the Best? I finish the video going over the main points and deciding which binocular is best in which circumstances.

📒100% Honest, Real Reviews, Advice & Opinions📒
I would like to make it completely clear that like all the reviews and advice that I give on the #BestBinoculars Reviews video channel and website, this is my honest and completely genuine opinion and I am in no way compensated to describe a binocular in a particular way or with a bias.
In other words, if I think a binocular or a feature on it is great, I will say so. If I think it is rubbish or it is weak in certain areas, I will also point them out.
Before writing and publishing any binocular review, I thoroughly research, test, and use the instrument in my office as well as out in the field. I also conduct comprehensive comparisons between the binocular under review with a number of benchmark binoculars in both good and bad light conditions.
Whilst I make every effort not to, I do make the occasional error or am sometimes supplied with the wrong details. If you spot any mistakes, please feel free to contact me either in the comments section, via social media or on my site, so that I can rectify it.
As always, I love getting feedback and your opinions. it is these that help me improve and continue to supply you with content, advice, and reviews that you actually want to watch.

Good summary! I find 15x56 an attractive configuration to fill the gap between normal handheld binocular like for example 8x42 and a spottingscope with 30-40x. Personally I consider 10x as the upper limit for use without support. It is indeed very comfortable to use both eyes and looking straight for viewing the landscape and birding. Apart from a tripod, a monopod also helps a lot to stabilize the view and is actually a true advantage even with lower magnification when it comes to detecting details. The Maven looks like a nice binocular and I can consider to get 18x but important for me is to have a sufficient eye relief even with eyeglasses which the higher powered glasses don't use to have. The eye lenses of Maven 18x56 seem to be large size so it maybe works? It's also important that the lens is not too much recessed from the eyecup edge. Which in a number of binoculars has spoiled the useful eye relief.

Hi Jason. As per usual a good and informative article. I think you’re totally right to point out image shake and exit pupil. Although as I become older and wiser, my range of pupil dilatation has significantly reduced, therefore reducing the importance of a very high ranging exit pupil. Keep up the good work!

Hi Jon, Thanks for the kind words and the comment. Yes it is a good point that you make as different peoples pupils will have different maximums that they can open up to and as you get older they tend to become less able to open up as wide as they once could. Hi, thank you for your great work. I'm waiting the lockdown to end in order to go and try a couple of binos. Unfortunately here in Europe (I live in Switzerland, which is even outside EU) brands such as Maven and Vortex are hard to find. I'll go to Italy as soon as I can to try Vortex UHD 18x56 (luckily there is a reseller in Lecco, not so far away). Btw as far as I know Kaibab line was replaced by UHD. My biggest concern is fringing (CA), which I hate. If Vortex sucks I'll try Meopta 15x56 (better than Zeiss it seems) much cheaper than Swaro. If it sucks too, I have arm and leg ready... Steiner hx or Maven b4/b5 15x56 are nowhere to find here :(

The question is that for these high powered binoculars, isn't it better to go with the stabilized binoculars like the ones from Cannon and Fuji? Perhaps you can do a video comparing these to the stabilized ones and what are the pros and cons of non-stabilized vs stabilized at these high magnifications

As someone who has tested both the Vortex Razor UHD 18x56 and Steiner HX 15x56, which one would you recommend for long range wildlife viewing (not birding) with a tripod. My primary requirement is image details and I am intending to use it during daylight. Also I do not wear a glass. I would really appreciate your views on this. Thank you.

Hi Debapriyo. Firstly sorry for the delayed reply, I have been away so I hope that I'm not too late? As to your question - both are very good options, so there is no wrong choice here. However if it was me, and if as you say the light is good, I would go with the 18x56 if I was viewing very far into the distance, like on a distant range of hills, whilst the Steiner would be my choice at mid to far distances. Note that I'm intentionally being vague about distances here as it all depends on the level of detail you expect or want to see. If it is only as much detail as possible that you want and are not concerned with a narrower field of view (which can make searching for wildlife more difficult), then the 18x56 would be the option to go for and as the Vortex Razor UHD 10x42 that I tested www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/Vortex-Razor-UHD-10x42-Binoculars-Review-255.htm was soo good, I am sure the 18x56 configuration will be equally as impressive in this niche.

@@Bestbinocularsreviews Thank you for your response. Very helpful. I did get a chance to try out the Vortex Razor UHD 18x56 at a sports warehouse, and I have to say I was impressed. It's relatively light weight given the size of the equipment and I like the ergonomics of the product. A 18 powered binocular is meant for use with a tripod, but the ergonomics is important for short term use without the tripod. Like I said I tested the Vortex binocular indoors (large indoor space), and the glass quality seemed very good. I am pretty sure the Vortex equipment will work as promised if I try it out outdoors. Having said this. I worry about a couple of things with the Vortex binocular. (1) The exit pupil is 3.1; this may not be a huge concern, because I do not think I will use the binocular a lot in very low light. (2) Not very sure about the quality of image at a very far distance with these 18 power magnification. I do not have access to Steiner 15x56 at the moment, but I would definitely like to try that out sometime in the future. Once again, I very much appreciate your response to my question and as always I find your channel and content very informative and useful.

@@debdas16 I’m facing the same dilemma regarding the Vortex Razor UHD 18x56 and the Steiner HX 15x56 binoculars. I am looking for an alternative to using a spotting scope for hunting and low light gathering is definitely a requirement. I looked at the Razor UHD 18x56 in the Sportsman Warehouse but really couldn’t draw an opinion because it was indoors and difficult to hold them steady enough. The salesman in the store said he sees more animals with his 15x56 than when he used an 18x56. I have never owned a pair of Steiner center focus binoculars but have several pairs of their auto focus binoculars that I’m satisfied with. The HX 15x56 is about half the price of the the Razor UHD. What did you end of choosing? Did you look at an image-stabilizing binocular? Sig Sauer makes a 16x42 that has gotten decent reviews. Cheers!

It's so disappointing because I read a lot of good reviews about them but, unfortunately it didn't live up to expectation. What do you think of them or am I missing something? I wanted a full size long range bins that are not as big as the 20 x 80s and 25 x 70/100s of these world, where do I start? porro, bak4 & FMC or at least MC of course. Birdwatching, neighbors, planespotting, nature etc.

I tried those same Nikons and, no way. Not remotely satisfying to look through. I'm leaning the Mavens. Japanese optics, US build, far less costly than Swaros, with rave reviews. I know the jump from cheap Nikons to $1600 Mavens seems absurd, but I had to work up in cost to convince myself the layout was worth it. I do think I'd be satisfied with something in the $600-800 range, but ultimately I want top tier. My Nikon Monarch 7's are very good. But a little better is what I'm after.

Hi @Best Binocular Reviews Thank you for helping out people who need help in choosing binoculars. I am regular to your channel and never miss a video related to binoculars. Based on your advice I have chosen Steiner HX 15x56 and they are really awesome. Then I started looking for 12x50 or 12x56 as I already own an 8x42 trying to close that gap. However I couldn't find any video in that segment, maybe I missed it. With My research and budget I have a quite a few options but was looking for your opinion what is the best option. The options I have are Kowa BD 12x56 (Genesis 12x50 not an option), Celestron Nature DX 12x56, Vortex Diamondback HD 12x50 Binoculars (2019 Version), Bushnell Engage EDX 12x50, Maven C3 ED Binocular (12X50), Athlon Optics Midas G2 UHD Binocular - 12x50,. I understand they are in a different price range and still thought of asking for your opinion which will be the best of all. I further understand that you may not have done a review on all the above-mentioned models but still whatever is your judgement, I'll go with it. Hope you can help me with this. Regards

In terms of the stabilization, you can expect it to work a little better on the 15x model. For an idea of how the Image Stabilization looks in the view, take a look at my demo video of the Kite APC 16x42 Image Stabilised Binoculars - kzread.info/dash/bejne/kX2hprB6g93dkpc.html But do keep in mind that these Canons are only able to correct about 0.7 degrees of movement, whilst the Kite can correct 2 degrees.

  • @Bestbinocularsreviews

    @Bestbinocularsreviews

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi, it is a tough one as you need a high power, but at the same time because I assume your roller pigeons are fast moving you also need a wide field of view. I also assume mounting it onto a tripod will be out of the question? If this is the case, my initial thoughts would be to go for the middle ground with something like a 12x50 so the Athlon Midas 12x50 Binoculars www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/AthlonMidas12x50BinocularsReview-247.htm would be a good example - decent reach, but also steady enough to use from the hands and with a reasonably wide view....? I am not sure how much detail you need to see, but with a power that is too high, it may make it impossible to follow the birds in flight....

Second the rubber is not that great. Image stabilisation works well though and you can see why it's always good to buy a binoculars with IS. Shame the good brands are not bringing out IS and if they are they are quite expensive.

Technically there is not difference and yes, you can use binoculars for both uses. For example a 7x50 binocular makes and excellent birding binocular and a good wide field Astro binocular. Whilst something like a 15x70 makes an excellent Astronomy binocular and when mounted on a tripod can be good for viewing birds out in the open in the fa distance - Like on a field or at the coast for example. No, I would say a 16x32 binocular would not be good for astronomy as it only has small 32mm lenses and a tiny 2mm exit pupil. I have a question, there is a aculon nikon 10-22x50 but costs 200$ but these are only 18x and 16x but why is it so much more expensive? Am i being scammed or something?

Hi, I am not 100% sure what you mean - anyway, the 10-22x50 configuration indicates a variable magnification or "zoom" binocular with a range of between 10x and 22x with 50mm lenses - generally I advise staying away from zoom binoculars - see here: www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/zoom-binoculars.php as the have issues and are often of a lower quality than a similar fixed magnification binocular.

If you want more detail at long range, go for the 18x56.

None of your binoculars seam too have a built in hand leaver to focus from SAY 8x to 18x magnification.Would this type NOT be a better choice Rather than being stuck with one PERMANENT magnification. 18x . . .

Hi Robert, many thanks for your comment. Variable magnification on a binocular does in theory sound like a great idea, but unlike a scope which only has one barrel, making sure the two sides of a binocular work perfectly in unison has its challenges. Most high end optical manufactures stay away from "zoom binoculars" because of this and the cheap ones on offer are often really bad. For more detailed info and some better examples, check out my guide to zoom binoculars here: www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/zoom-binoculars.php

The correct answer is Canon 15x50 IS or 18x50 IS so you’ll never need a tripod (just lithium batteries) 😂

Yes, that is certainly an option - price is another factor with IS binoculars - I recently tested the Kite APC 16x42 Image Stabilized Binoculars which I have to say, surprised me: www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/Kite-APC-16x42-Image-Stabilised-Binoculars-Review-275.htm

Both binoculars are too big and with too much magnification for any hand use. This is tripod only deal.
