▶Craftsman Profile
Megumi Mochizuki / Paper-cutting artist
Born 1978 in Yokohama. Based in Kyoto, Japan.
Started working as a paper cutting artist while a student at Tokyo Gakugei University. Utilizing the tense, transparent beauty unique to paper cutting created by carving a single sheet of paper, she has created many large-scale installations in traditional architecture such as temples and tea rooms. In recent years, her work’s main theme is East Asian mythology and ancient thought. She studies the tangible and intangible historical heritage of Kyoto and other cities, and recreates the spirit of that heritage in her contemporary works. She is also interested in materials and has been researching traditional paper producing areas in Japan and abroad. A member of the Swiss paper cutting society.

Just drawing your 15 metre dragon is astonishing enough!! But then the cutting out, too!! Amazing! So beautiful hanging, floating, undulating int the air! Alive! So magical! The shadows are bonus! White form. Black shadow. Very symbolic. Like yin and yang. Your technique: 1) it looks like your blade swivels..you couldn’t do this without this feature. 2) the paper you used looks fairly thick. Did you go through a few blades to always have the sharpest cuts? 3) i couldn’t tell, but did you erase al those lines so your dragon would be pure white? 4) i got a sore index finger watching you cut and cut and cut, hour after hour..how sore were you after completion?? So, BRAVO!! Thanks for sharing!

110 hours is a lot of patience. It's hard to create something spectacular. The footage also shows that concentration is required.
