Was it that sweet, skinny blonde lady and her son who (I thought) owned and operated the bike/kart rental spot underneath?! I met her a few years ago and befriended her during a two week solo vacation to Fort Myers Beach. She is a strong, impressive person! Although we lost touch, this is the closest I might get to contacting her to let her know I was thinking about her. I left part of my heart and soul in Fort Myers Beach, and the spot had a lot to do with that. She shared her story with me, and even invited me up one sunset for a beer. She gave me the moped I took out for entire days to Sanibel Island, the bicycle I rode south to the preserve, the three-wheeled motorcycle thing just for kicks… I will miss Ft Myers Beach. I’ll come down next Spring to help contribute to economic recovery…

I live about 7 miles inland from Fort Myers Beach, and the storm surge was about knee deep(I'm 6ft tall) at our apartment complex. The next morning when the water had receded, you can see all of the abandoned cars in the middle of the road from the storm surge. This is a day that I will never forget for as long as I live.

When Dorian hit the Bahamas we had a government official post a video on social media that showed him in waist deep water in his home… He was on the second floor… There are maps of the islands that just show how much was submerged by the surge and more than half of them were just vanished under a tide of dirty, debris filled water. Living here and seeing these sorts of hurricanes happening makes it feel like playing Russian Roulette every hurricane season. It’s no longer, “gotta trim the branches this week” or “I’ll probably need to get a roofer after this”, instead it’s “Is this the year when my home and everything I worked so hard for will be utterly ruined, as well as those of my neighbors, friends and coworkers?”

I am Italian, I live in Italy, but my father lives there in Fort Myers, his house survived by a miracle, in those days I remained in suspense because I could not even call him since he had no telephone line, I am close to all the people who were damaged by that disaster .
We went through this storm in N Ft. Myers and even though I had no storm surge, it was no picnic either. We never got the eye but stayed in the eyewall 6-7 hours or more with almost constant 100-125 mph gusts and that might be conservative. The backside came in about 6:30-7:00 pm and was ever bit as strong as the front side but only lasted until about 8:30-9:00 pm before calming down some. No house damage but a lot of tree damage and all the older mobile home parks to my south really took a beating and deposited sheet metal and styrofoam insulation aplenty on my 5 acres. Just finished cleanup a week ago. I am so glad these folks and their pets survived that wild ride and hope all that see this video will give more thought about evacuating storm surge areas when the next big blow comes their way.
This is absolutely wild. It’s hard to imagine what a storm surge looks like until you can physically see it get higher and higher. The sheer force that it has too. The waves it created were massive. Amazing footage but so heartbreaking at the level of destruction the hurricane caused.

I have experienced two class 5, two class 4 and numerous class 1,2 and 3 hurricanes. I have tried desperately, (with little success), to explain to people over the years of what is capable during one of these monster storms. It's not just the wind, but even more destructive at times, is the storm surges of walls of water. I live in Florida. I'm scared of storms because I know the power of the waves because we're boaters. In a 60' boat the waves on a sunny day can humble you so quick. Mother Nature that owns that sand, we humans are astoundingly naive that we control anything. Jacque Cousteau many years ago said on video NO ONE SHOULD LIVE WITHIN 10 miles of the coast, NO ONE. He said it should all be day parks that close at dusk but he said the greed of the unsafe building will come back to haunt us and it has. Cousteau was brilliant and no one wanted to listen to him. I have always adhered to his advice. I lost my front porch and we have roof damage and I couldn't be happier to have so little damage and a home to come back home to. I am so thankful to have followed Cousteau and all reading this should research his views. My heart ❤ goes out to those affected by Ian.🙏

I live in Punta Gorda, just north of Fort Myers. We only just got our power and internet back today, and the destruction here is still immense. We were expecting to get this storm surge, but both fortunately and unfortunately, the storm slowed and turned further east leaving us in the middle rather than on it's southern side. I've been through numerous hurricanes over the years, most memorable of which was Charley. But this storm was so much worse. Please understand, do not underestimate the power of a hurricane. Even the strongest houses in our area were ripped up. If you're told to get out, then get out. Do not tempt fate by staying. Possessions and homes can be replaced, your life can't.

Having seen this footage I can now say when the next hurricane comes, I’ll be vacationing in Alaska where the weather is normal.

Hello 👋 there how are you doing today hope you're having a specific day over there
Great video. It truly captures how one minute you’re on dry pavement and a few hours later you’re swallowed by the ocean.
Watching it creep in was scary.. wow. I chased this storm in Bradenton and it was bad there but no surge, this is just a whole nother level
This is why the focus on expiremental storm surge forecasts with NOAA and NWS are so needed. Wind speed categories are helpful, but in the end it's water that kills the most people and causes the most damage. And these videos are important to give visual frames of reference! It's hard to imagine the scale of what 15' of surge across several miles of coastline actually looks like, especially while standing on a sunny street with the hurricane still 2 days away.
@markpalavosvrahotes5575

What the NHC should do is get rid of the Saffir Simpson scale. Do a 1 to 5 scale for wind one for rain forecast and one for surge and add up the numbers. So theoretically 15 is the highest you could go.
We are staying in Ft Myers now on a spring vacation, April 2024. The town is still rebuilding from all the devastation. Nicest people here, beautiful place, but a Cat 5 hurricane don’t care about that.
This video gave me chills. I think it should be used for educational purposes to illustrate how deadly a storm surge can be. Never underestimate the power of the ocean.
WOW great footage! The power of the storm surge is unbelievable.

They weren’t kidding when predicting 18 ft storm surge. This is unreal. Holy Macaroni !!!

I was trying to estimate the surge from this footage. Assuming this area is 2-3 feet above sea level, this looks like about 15-18 feet
Storm surge is what scares me the most when it comes to these storms. That and embedded tornados that are almost impossible to detect. Prayers lifted to all affected areas in Ians path.

@@billhosko7723 ? Well sir, since you do not know me I will excuse you comment, as it is a stressful time. I was the one who fed countless neighbors when jensen beach got hit by Francis and Jeanne, back to back in 2004 and my road and area was without power for 4 days short of 3 months! My ex and I rescued people who decided to try and drive through flooded waters because we had a monster truck ( don't judge) that easily handles the water depths. I was EMS for St Lucie County then and went on calls to rescue or med emergencies when people refused to leave despite mandatory evacuations! And now I cannot work for the rest of my life because during Wilma, I again went on calls when no one else would, and broke my spine. So don't you dare tell me people aren't out there helping others!!
Certainly looks like a nice place to vacation, can't imagine living in such an inviting and beautiful area.
My aunt has lived in Fort Myers for over 40 years, in the same house, more than a mile from the Gulf and she had 6+ feet of water in her house and yard. A lifelong Floridian, she is rebuilding her life and home in the same place at the age of 82. I want to be as strong and resilient as she!💪
Oh god! Its so so scary to watch, can't even imagine how people actual deals with this kind of situation, may god protect them❤
This is just some seriously AMAZING footage they managed to capture. It essentially looks like there’s random palm trees in the middle of the ocean w a telephone pole & wires above it.
This is downright brilliant. Years ago as a reporter, I wanted to post cameras in storms. Go-Pros have changed the world. Tell me exactly how you did this? Battery life? Harddrive storage? When did you mount the camera and where did you go for safety after you mounted it?

In June 2021 Imoved from Dallas to Theodore Alabama (15 miles south of Mobile). The house was on Fowl River. I remember going through 3 hurricanes and then someone said the next storm is going to be a Storm Surge. I said...what's that? she said it's so much worse than a hurricane and she never said anything else so I was freaking out. I finally moved 5 months later. I stayed in Port Charlotte Florida and they convinced me to move there but after 8 days I didn't have peace so I moved to California. I'm so thankful.

I agree, this is must viewing, especially for future storms. It would be great to have a time stamp to see how fast this happened.
This is fantastic footage. A friend of mine was a reporter at the News-Press and lived in that house back in '98. He pointed out the video to me. How did you make this? This is the best explanation of storm surge I've ever seen.

He had left remote sensors at different locations to get data and footage to analyze for as long as their sensor stayed up. I’m stunned this one Made it till next day (or was that just during the eye calm at the end? I’d assume that wouldn’t offer enou time for the water to be gone already). Scary. I was watching you guys, Max but lost your stream and switched to Ryan’s channel. But my girl and I were worried about you guys bad when your live streams dropped but the other chasers all up. Glad you guys are safe and this is amazingly heartbreaking foootAge. Living up here in Tampa area for the couple days prior we were expecting that and we’re surprised when the predictions shifted suddenly. Not much evac time for them for sure. I pray they used it.

I just have one question after watching this video - why is the "open" sign upside down?
We’ve never had anything this bad. They really should have put a bigger emphasis on this storm like they did with Irma. A lot of ppl evacuated from Irma. So many people are living in campers it’s ridiculous. I’ve seen many areas on the beach where the mailbox of a house still remains but the house has completely vanished. Prayers are going out to all of you that have lost their homes and to the families who have lost someone 🙏🏽

It’s crazy! Never seen anything like this.😮😢 I have chills watching this.
HOLY SMOLIE! Now, that is what Storm Surge really is. Great job! Prayers for everyone affected by IAN.
Unbelievable. But clearly should be believed. This is so incredibly sad. I cannot imagine having my home full of all of my possessions just uprooted and gone and destroyed. My heart goes out to all who have experienced any level of this.
Laying back eating popcorn while watching this best movies I've seen yet. 4k please! That's all it's missing 🥺 Alright Florida can't wait for a next year let's make it bigger this time. And give me the fresh cold front! 😀
Insane 😲sad that family lost their house .. prayers for Florida. Glad you are okay.
That's insane footage 😮😮 Such a sad situation 😢
I’m a firefighter and my station is on the beach on the gulf coast in the panhandle. I pray we never get this because I have to be at work when a hurricane comes.
Wow. That’s horrendous. It’s also sad for wildlife and any lost or homeless pets.
I hope that whoever opened the door of the house, in the beginning of the video, watching the water start to come up the street, got out in time. :(

I doubt it. For one, the surge was already coming in. You can see it coming up the road, by that point it's probably too late to get out. Secondly, you can see the door open again when the surge starts to take it away. I don't know 100% for sure that it's a person, but it seems likely, and if it was, I don't see how they survived. :/

This is the highest, and worst, storm surge I have ever seen. If you compare the view from the first 5 seconds of the video to the same view at 2:18, you can see SEAWEED hanging from the power lines which are strung at least 25 feet (about 7 meters) above the road! This video is like a 2-minute masters class showing the most deadly weapon hurricanes possess in terrifying detail.
Great video, the only thing I would’ve asked for is a time stamp so we could see how fast this event takes place. From calm to chaotic.
