I remember seeing a show about if people would do anything about someone actively cutting locks off a bike years ago. IIRC it was filmed in New York, and the police and most passersby did nothing right up until they used an angle grinder. Various bolt cutters, hammers, exc were just ignored.

@aaronscott7467 Oh definitely. Price for quality, Kryptonite locks are quite good. Abus too IIRC. They're both recommended for ebikes, so long as you also detach the battery as that is often what is stolen.

I love how LPL basically just asserted that the NYPD put their officers in unnecessary danger to cut off the locks rather than calling an experienced lock smith who could safely remove them in seconds. Fits in line with the rest of the unnecessary escalation by the NYPD though.

So the cop has basically endorsed this lock as being a good security choice as it’s difficult to quickly remove, which is kind of the purpose of a good lock. He has also just announced to anyone with nefarious intentions which lock will cause the authorities the most inconvenience 😂

The stupidest and most embarrassing part of that cop's declaration is that those exact bike locks are sold to students in the university store. It just goes to show propaganda doesn't care about facts as long as it can create a villain for you to be afraid of or hate.

I like how they brought it out without the sheath over the chain so it looks scarier. They sold this one on the school's store as one of the suggested bike locks.

Hi NY resident here... all I can say is this is embarrassing. The commissioner should know where he works a lot of people don't have cars and use other methods of getting around places. And sometimes... SOMETIMES... people would like to prevent an easily stolen item from being well stolen...

The Commissioner's dumbass comment about the bike lock aside, there ARE rioters out there. Let's just be very clear about that. And even "peaceful protesters" have and are holding up major motorways and blocking entrances to buildings just to be as much of a public nuisance as humanly possible.

@@SeanBZA Well I use a U-lock similar to that, to attach the bike frame alongside the back wheel to something stationary and then use that chain with a lttile bit less beefy lock to attach the front wheel to the frame and if possible to the stationary thing. If I feel extra paranoid I have some cables I can use to attach the saddle to the rest. Yeah, they can use a bolt cutter to steal my saddle, if they want to make that much effort for so little reward. Of course depends on where I'm going. If I go somewhre the bike is pretty much safe and have difficult attachment points, I often use the chain to attach frame and back tire to something sttationary and I have a little folding lock (had to buy it for insurance reasons, because the Kryptonites were too old) that I then use for the front wheel. Can be cut with a bolt cutter, too. But hey, that is my setup for locations I could probably get away with not locking the bike at all.

I have seen videos, where people tried stealing a bike in broad daylight with a battery powered angle grinder and no one said a thing. So as you can't rake the lock open, I doubt anyone will try to open the lock non destructive.

I was a juror on a kidnapping trial where the detectives that arrived on the scene where the victim was being held basically went "huh, looks like the victim was held here" and did -zero- additional fact finding on the farm he had been locked up at. I have the smaller chain from kryptonite and had to cut off the lock as it was seized. I’m a mechanic and we wanted to see how tough it was. We used the largest bolt cutters we had and had two guys leaning on one of the handles. Needless to say the blades snapped off before the chain broke.

Having worked in a place that used dozens of cut off discs (12" dia and larger) a day, I can say that disc blow-ups are frightening. We left the remnants of a couple of burst discs that ended up stuck in the ceiling as a warning. Diamond impregnated ones are the way to go. LPL knows his stuff.

@@HappyDude1 I should have mentioned that the machines used were fixed installation hand operated saws for cutting off lengths of metal bars up to 2 1/2 inch diameter. There had to be somewhere to get the bars in, which meant there was always an open area for the bits of burst disc to escape. Nevertheless, the people operating the saws were well protected.

3D printing firearms is incredibly easy on paper. Anyone who has actually printed a firearm will tell you, they are much more difficult to get right than you would assume.

@@EricDeKirkwood99 it's easier to just buy a gun from a back alley by asking around... "3d printed guns" are nothing to worry about and are pushed by the media to stir up drama. Probably can't even fire a .22 round out of the best plastic gun without it exploding. (That's the smallest ammo, size of an average pea.)

Yeah they literally built and sold it FOR THEM what a clown.

That police chief needs to learn a very important axiom, "Correlation, doesn't equal causation". They probably had those chains so they could keep their bikes from being stolen, and just used them and left the bikes at home.

The police had to PHYSICALLY REMOVE the protective cover off his "example" so it would look more dangerous and possibly illegal.

I can confirm as a student, this is the type of lock I carry, and I don't even live in NY

Its funny because Columbia has this exact Kryptonite and chain on their campus store... so yeah, they do bring it and Columbia recommends you use it.

This is about as close to a recommendation as LPL gives. Just yesterday I bought my son, a Kryptonite bike lock with a disc detainer core based on my learning from this channel.

Damn that's crazy. Every door? I wish there was any reason to ever believe the NYPD though. Then maybe we'd know more.

That police commissioner comes off as either an idiot or a crooked cop. It doesn't matter what you use to defeat the lock, he's the biggest tool I've ever seen.

Why would anyone expect NYPD Management to get anything right? Especially where theft prevention is concerned.

You know what's even bad about the commissioner saying that it's not a chain students bring to school? The exact lock he's holding is sold in the school shop (or so I've been told)

Meanwhile, police have a pile of Master Lock locks found at every bike rack with chains that are intact and the lock looks like it is brand new.

These locks were sold in the university store as "the bike lock to have"".

In an actual emergency, during that conversation, Firefighter 3 would have pulled out their halligan bar and broken open the door. Locks only matter if you’re not willing to destroy what they’re attached to. Firefighters work by different rules in actual emergencies.

The best part is that they sell/recommend these locks on the college website.

Honestly, it sounds like the lock might be not be the weakest point in security, which basically means the lock is doing it's job.

More like it IS a weakest point in still very strong system. This thing is one of the best you can put on your bike it seems.

That officer neither invested in a bike in his life, nor investigated a bike theft. Because who cares like hundreds of them get stolen everyday....

I’ve heard you referenced on several different KZread channels lately, always with reverence and respect. So that tells me you are doing things right Sir! Been a fan for a long time. Just started trying to pick recently as I’m in charge of a 150 unit upscale residential complex. Locks used to scare me to get inside of them. Now they are fun and interesting, because you have shown us they aren’t usually something to be afraid of. So thanks Sir!

In Sweden, if you do not use look like this on your bike, your insurance will not cover your bike if stolen.

That was much quicker than an Angle Grinder AND much safer all round ;-)

Right now in the market for a new lock for my new E-cargobike. I think the kryptonite NYC series is the right thing for me. I'm also a professional agitator though.

Or prevents people from biking so they don’t have to worry about being considered criminals for not wanting their bike stolen. But of course the police would never be anti-bike. It’s not like they’re sponsored by the Ford motor company or anything.

Mr. Police Guy: I dunno on your part of the world, but when I was a teenager, in much safer 1980's Spain, the chain _I_ used to hold my bike was... let's say "considerably tougher" than the necklace hanger chain that you claim only radicals would use.

Brit' here. Cyclists over in blighty have to use chain locks like this too, or a couple of D locks with an extender cable or two 🤔.

I've always heard there's an IQ test for police officers and if you score too well they won't hire you.

Great video as always. Police giving misinformation or unhelpful information is becoming more of an issue it seems. I'm sure you heard of Toronto Police advising residents to leave their car key fobs easily accessible to thieves.

I'm not anti-Police, but I think this shows the BIG difference between an Authority Figure, and an Authoritative Figure. LPL isn't in a position to tell people what to do, but he DOES know what he's talking about, whereas the Police officer is talking nonsense.

That's the lock I bought for my ebike in 2021. I'm happy to see LPL rate it so high.
