Thanks for the great project idea. The hardest thing to get was the M12 bolt, I ended up finding one at our local Autozone. For anyone else that might hit this, the wires that go from the controller (the one linked to in the description) to the motor didn’t match for me. When I plugged in the three wires to their matching colors I could hear the motor in the hub hum but the wheel didn’t turn. I ended up with (from controller to motor) yellow to yellow, blue to green and green to blue. I hope that helps out anyone else that might hit this issue.

I bought a conversion kit off eBay about 5 or 6 years ago for $150 and put it on my mountain bike. At that time I couldn't find lithium batteries for less than $400, so I used lead which cost around $60. It was fast and good for about 20 minutes. But, that was the heaviest piece of crap, that took for ever to charge. It's crazy how technology changes so fast.

I know what we're asking Santa for my kid for christmas this year. Dirt bike is nice, but this is so much more practical for any kid. I'm thinking an aluminum bracket mounted to the frame to hold the battery so you can take it with you to charge (at work, friends house, etc...) plus it becomes significantly less attractive to a thief if they can't just make it go, or steal the battery.

I have a 3 wheeler that came with an ANCIENT 12 Volt motor and battery. Both died at the same time. I trained my service dog to pull me. (I am handicapped) Bought a new motor and battery and with no instructions, got it to work. The freedom I experienced after being a cripple for 5 years is beyond description. My.dog still goes with me but instead of being a prisoner at my home, I now look forward to getting up every day and exploring my hometown. It is better than a car and My service dog LOVES IT. My problem hooking things up was the pedal assist. I pedal as mu h as I can so my legs wont atrophy but all the extra stuff I dont need. This video shows a simple way to get going. Please do a video on 3 wheeler's. They're different. Like you, I.want speed and power. It seems the people building 3 wheelers for handicapped folks dont want us to go more than 25 mph. Mine does 30. 1000Watt 20 Amp-Hour Battery. No pedal assist needed or wanted. It was a PITA from the start. Thanks for the nice short video. Do 3 wheelers soon!

I did this conversion on my girlfriends Cruiser Bike. It is a single speed. It now goes faster than my road bike! It is a blast! Not much torque but it does have upper end power as you see in the video. The controller is garbage and took some tinkering to get to work. Tip, when you turn it on the wheel automatically accelerates! This is because it does a self calibration mode. Once I figured this out it was good to go.

I have a few old bikes, and I'm kicking around the idea of making an e-bike. I've seen several reviews and how-to videos, and it seems that people are recommending powering the rear wheel of a bike. The front wheel headset, the tube on the front of the frame with bearings that connect to the handlebars, is not made for the torque of the electric motor. It can damage the headset, even breaking the welds that hold the headset to the frame. I don't know how much of a problem it will be, but something to consider. With me being "El Gordo", I'll need extra power to get me up the hills, which means extra extra torque will be needed, and extra strain on the frame.

I have an old trail bike I've wanted to convert to an ebike, and possibly add fat tires as well, but the cost of all the conversion kits are ridiculous or way underpowered and won't break 15mph. So now I'm going to use this method, have a friend 3D print some housings and brackets so it's not all zip ties, and see how many battery packs I can fit in the frame space in parallel for the most range (I'm guessing about 4 of the largest ones, so maybe about 80 miles per charge. Unless I do 2xParallel of 2xSeries so I've got 40 miles of 70v for MOAR POWAH

These have become some of my favorite projects over the last year. My daughter uses her bike now to get to work and college instead of spending money on gas. I just wish more of these wheels were available, as they are the perfect wheel for bikes that still get pedaled and builds where you want AWD as when they are not powered they free wheel without drag (unlike the non geared hub motors). I hope you get more of these in someday! The 30 cell packs are pefect for builds, but for more range it's hard to beat the Shorty R5.

You'll need a lot more than this build to have a safe and reliable ebike build in 2022. Batteries costs have gone up, $200 gets a decent one now. Kits w/ a throttle, controller, etc run about $120 at least. Then you need the hub motor and spoke wheel, that's another $150-$200. A used bike in decent condition is another $100. After all that work, you really should replace the tires and brakes. That's another $70, and a charger for $30. Finally, after nearly $800 and a LOT of work you now have an ebike that's inferior to almost any new low end eBike. Which will have a warranty, and doesn't need many hours of time and work invested in it. They will ship it to your door, and in 1-2 hours you're on the road w/ a bike that's reliable and handles better because the weight of the hub motor is on the rear, not on the front. Those brake electrical connections that he decided to leave out? That's a really, really bad idea. Those are designed to cut the power to the motor if something goes wrong and the throttle sticks or something equally bad happens. They are required on all ebikes by Federal law for a reason.

Well, after all my griping, here's what happened. It's surprisingly easy to put it together. There are a couple things that needed to be cut and have plugs put on them. Fortunately I had some xt60's laying around. I got it up and running, and it works great. Two of the wires had to be switched. They said that it was out of phase, so they told me to switch to of the motor power wires and it worked. If your do-it-yourself'er, can solder a little bit, and aren't scared of diving in headfirst, it's not a big deal. I have a great bike that goes 22 miles an hour, and will last for about 20 miles, and I only have $200 invested with the bike! Lol

My GF got an e-bike and I can say once go electric you will never want to ride a regular bike again at least for distance riding. For everyone contemplating getting one and worried about the range, my 2 cents after owning one for a while I would not worry about it as long as your bike has 15 miles you are fine for 90% of the time unless your are going to commute to work and it is a longer distance or some special use case. We use our electrics for running up to the grocery store or corner store. Again it is so worth the $ spent.

Think again -NOT- about doubling the voltage to 72V: DO NOT "TRY/FRY" THAT - That would use FOUR TIMES the wattage, and I'm willing to guarantee that the controlller and/or the motor will break and leave smoke behind in less than 5 seconds, probably in 1 second or less.

Just a note to any UK viewers that these Bafang kits are technically illegal here as you're not allowed to have a throttle (only pedal assist) or go above 15.5mph. Though I'm sure the cops are more bothered about the millions of (also technically illegal) e-scooters zipping around than they are about people's homebrew e-bikes. Personally I would want to connect up the cadence sensor and brake levers to provide more control, and also to tidy up the cables and put the controller and battery into an enclosure or something (even if only a frame bag) to protect it from rain and the risk of catching and ripping out a cable while riding. I looked into converting an upright town bike like the one in the video but ultimately couldn't be doing with the hassle or waiting months for shipping from China so bought a used e-bike that needed a few repairs instead for a similar amount of money. (Didn't want to mess around with dodgy Chinese lipos and risk burning down my house either.)
