First thing, school buses with no seatbelts? I have never been on a school bus that had seatbelts (because they were all public buses. The private ones used for expeditions had seatbelts)

I had a 89 Ford Thunderbird that had automatic seatbelts. When I started driving, there were no seat belt laws where I lived, so when they passed the law, a lot of people hated it. I did not mind, but forgetting to put it on was a thing. When I got the Thunderbird I was excited that I never had to even consider putting it on as it was automatic. I loved that car, motor was junk, but everything else about the car was great.

19:12 I *loved* my automatic seat belts in my Saturn '92! It was comfortable and only caused a problem if you were leaning forward; the seat belt came flying out of position and pulled your head into the wheel well and it was very hard to get out of that position. But it was easy to deal with. All you had to do was not lean forward whilst opening your door.

I've never understood no seatbelts on busses in Ga. You'd think my little Ga town would have them after a new driver accidentally let the tires fall off the edge of the road resulting in a roll over crash. As the bus slid on its side to a stop you can imagine what happened to a young teenage boy who unfortunately went feet first out the window while dragging to a stop. Pulled out, flattened, and ground up (like a roach under a shoe) for any other young passengers to witness helplessly. Congratulations Georgia on your brilliant law making.

Because if they passed that law, we could go back in time and that bus driver would be a better driver because of it! And it happens like, what, every day?

The Dymaxion car deserves more credit than this. Looked at within its context, it proposed an alternative to the form of the shape of a horse ( as motive power) out the front of a carriage, which dominated vehicle design at the time. What he (BF) recognised was that a shape moving through air, could resemble something more sensible than blocks pushing against a resistant force. On top pf this, he innovated a suspension rather like a scissor, that counterbalanced the engine and the passengers. This was really very interesting. I especially went to the car museum in Reno, Nevada to see one of the originals, and it was very thought provoking. The bodywork is surprisingly primitive, consisting of fabric over a timber frame, as was typical for the time, but you can't escape the brilliance of the thinking involved. Sir Norman Foster, architect, evidently appreciated the thinking involved, and created a replica. I hope he improved the seating. The accident you refer to was apparently not the fault of the Driver, or the car itself, but another vehicle that had the advantage of looking more conventional.

I'd take a Bricklin in a heartbeat

The Puma is a beauty in shape alone but the size was really off!

Related to #1 was the seat belt/ignition interlock. It was used in mid '70's cars for a short time. The car wouldn't start without the seatbelts latched in. But everyone would just bypass the interlock, and it was quickly discontinued.

Good point about the doors if the car flipped over, though. And yeah those doors were heavy!!

#15 & #1 Before "Seatbelts" there were almost no cases of "Whiplash", most people were thrown through the windscreen & killed, but there were very few cases of "Whiplash". That's progress for you.

Sure, but the real point is that there was a perceived need for their existence; people fought the science and statistics. Today we have a significant number of smokers, obesity and people who drive with their attention glued to their phones (to name a few)… we’ve come a long way - but we’re going in circles.

And once again a video by Top Five makes fallacious assertions in the first minute and a half. The reason why school busses don't have seat belts is that they simply don't need them. The design of the overall bus and seating is such that generally any impact won't cause general harm to the occupants. The upright soft back benches spaced within 10 to 18 inches of each other typically prevent too much forward movement. The bus's ride height and weight reduce the likelihood of any direct impact moving the bus, and the bus's weight means little movement from side, head on, and rear collisions is likely. In those rare instances where a bus rolls over or is hit with an equally sized vehicle, any seatbelts are likely to cause far more injuries than they would prevent.

If you look at most 🚌 the backs are hard tubular metal. Now, it has been many years since I have been in one, but there is little if no safety measures in a school bus. Something tells me Krist Martin that you don’t wear seatbelts in you personal vehicle. If you do, great, but what has been proven time and time again is that seatbelts keeps people/children in place so they don’t go careening around the inside of the bus and bounce off of things. CORRECTION: I stand corrected. Krist Martin, you are partially correct. Here is a quote from NSTA about seat belts in buses: According to the NHSTA: Seat belts are of no value in the majority of fatal accidents. @@jeffmech1 Always do research my friend. And yes I do wear my seatbelt in my car (a Miata). The fact is, school buses are very safe and seatbelts as your article points out, really don't help in crashes involving school buses. Even in the event of rollovers (which do happen) injuries tend to be very minimal. In fact you'll find even commercial passenger buses typically don't have seatbelts, be they city buses or long distance travel/tour buses. And there is another safety concern, egress in case of submersion. One of the key reasons why school buses don't have seatbelts is that in the case of the bus ending up in a lake or river (which again has happened) seatbelts become a hazard when kids panic. The need for immediate evacuation in such a situation requires that there be no restraints which could jam or otherwise get in the way. Overall school buses are surprisingly safe, counter intuitive as it might seem.

The Bricklin looks somewhat like a Saab Sonnet 3. Seat Belts - as a race car driver they are second nature to me. I put them on first thing.

Automatic seatbelts were only a result of the sudden requirement for passive restraints before the auto manufacturers could implement airbags. That's why you never saw them before or after that small window in time. They knew they were stupid.

I had a 1993 Subaru legacy with automatic seat belts and air bags. So they def. still made them after airbags were mainstream.

#4 C'mon guys, regarding the doors, that's not exactly true is it now? There have only been a few, but a few none the less, you can even find video's of some on here, there are even saloons where the entire side of the car disappears into the sills, & both #8 & #11 have produced them in the past, in fact, they have made some s#ite that you would not even believe. It's unfortunate, the M1 with a bit more thought & a lot less nonsense could have been a reasonable car, but as usual, BMW gets to a stage where they just throw ridiculous s#it on it, just look at the "rear end's" of half the cars they have built & their terrible 4cyd engines.

All metal aircraft became the norm during world war 2 and it was the standard method of construction for the most modern aircraft until the introduction of composite materials in later decades. You're completely wrong about the first segment school bus is not having seatbelt is not a shortcut, it's not cost saving for the manufacturing. They have compartmentalized seating which was designed to minimize injuries at all speeds. Studies have shown that compartmentalize seating for school buses is safer than school buses would be with seat belts. this current School busing system was well designed as were the vehicles that are used in it, you need to check your facts before starting to make a video!

Are in Connecticut there probably school buses is in between school and dropping off children school buses have been clocked you in 45 50 miles an hour on regular roads you can't claim it slow speed in fact do Mini Coopers drivers are inadequate in so many in fact have a criminal record I believe the school bus should be like a roller coaster ride once everybody's on the bus hold your hands up in the bar comes down to protect your children with a quick release in case of emergency but I know it comes down to money maybe this is why parents should bring their kids to school to selves just like parents you dropped your kids up at daycare cuz they're too busy to deal with their own children and horrible things have happened to People's children and daycare centers but this is what happens when people are too lazy to take care of their own children you and them spending half your salary on child support if not more is it really a value
