I recently had a disaster, and I lost almost everything I own. I realized all the sentimental things I was hanging on to were not as important as my actual memories. It was hard to lose so much so fast but I learned stuff is exactly that... stuff.

Sorry for your loss. Or not. Sometimes I look at all my stuff and wish I could have a flood or a house fire and not have to sort it all. And just walk away and start again, with only the things I really love. Then again some of my teaching materials are not replaceable and my clothes I have made, the fabric is not around anymore. So, losing them would hurt.

Can’t remember the term, but essentially any flat surface WILL get used unless there is a planned use for it. We never consider how the “plates shelf” doesn’t get cups, and vice versa… but the counter or kitchen table get cluttered all the time

The minimalist habit I'm trying to cultivate is getting rid of Just In Case items. I have stuff I've had forever, spare things i never use and probably never will, so I'm gradually trying to let them go (either to charity or to the bin, depending on the item).

I used to have a bag in my closet that I tossed things in that I didn't know what they were or stuff that I didn't know what to do with. You know stuff that you have to ask yourself, "What does this random key go to?" "What is this wire for?" "What if I need this one day?" If six months has gone by and I haven't used any of those things, I would throw the bag away without looking at what was in there.

My trick, through the transition to getting used to clear surfaces, was to put a post-it note on said clear surface with the message "this space is clear on purpose". Obviously I had a post-it note on the surface, but it served as a great reminder to put stuff away instead of putting it down on the surface.

My decluttering quote I live by is by Dana K White (not a minimalist, and neither am I) “You can keep anything but you can’t keep everything.” As it pertains to the set limits of space for everything in your home. If you have one shelf for cookbooks, you can keep any cookbooks you want until that shelf is full - keep your favorites and let the rest go.

One of the worst things that happened led to the best. We had to downsize from a 3 bedroom house with a 400Sq ft studio out back to a 2 bedroom apartment. It took ages to do it, but we have decluttered down to what comfortably and realistically fits in this smallish place and the freedom that came with it is not stressing constantly any longer over clutter, and it is so much easier to keep tidy. I also have the peace of mind knowing if I ever need to move again that it will not be a chaotic disaster that every single move in my adult life has been. I can pack my whole place in probably a weekend and not have to rush.

My problem is I get no bigger thrill than "making something from nothing" -- so I see the possibility in EVERYTHING. "I can do something with that..." Couple that with ADHD and Autism and...I have too much stuff. I AM a minimalist at heart, but a maximalist, with disposable income and a dopamine-driven shopping addiction, in practice. And I DO like to be prepared for anything. What really resonated with me was your comment about too many options make you have to choose between them, because I have felt that paralysis. I thought my options gave me freedom, but they have the opposite effect. Been watching your videos for a couple days and subscribed today. Also donated 7 bags of "stuff" in the last week, so maybe you are having the intended effect.

Getting rid of it all can be stressful. What I do is zone cleaning. I divide my house into 5 zones. I spend 1 week in each zone. Deep cleaning, decluttering, and organizing. You can't do it all but adding a couple of areas to declutter in that week makes a huge dent. What you don't get the first time around, you'll probably get next time. My place annoys me when I walk in, but I swear I don't have too much stuff. I mean, I could, of course, always try to have even less, but I might really just not have enough space, be bad at organizing it or too lazy to put everything away. There's space in my closets - even in the kitchen and bathroom. I think there's a whole empty drawer in my bedroom. Paring it down would mean getting rid of stuff that serves an important (although sometimes rare) function or undecorating significantly. And most of those points still apply.

Educational and entertaining!! 😊😊 I used to have reusable shopping bags everywhere. I went through them and kept four. the ones I kept are the ones that fold up into a little pouch and take up very little space. Yes clearing space really clears your mind! 💕💕

Well said. I don't consider myself a minimalist but often times find myself with their habits. (Yes it's only confusing the first 100 times people notice it.) I DO have too much stuff but I don't often feel the need to be rid of it all. And when I do. I do get rid of things. I feel much of what you have said, is true to the core of not just being a minimalist but a person who wants to live a functional life. You have earned at least one sub from that.

Great tips. My wife and I have been in a mode of doing a lot of these things over the last year. When I find it hard to get rid of things I've found it is easier to put it in a tote or box and then get rid of it after 6-12 months of not using it.

I definitely have too much. The biggest issue for me is that I also would be called an environmentalist. The result is that when an object is needing removed from my life, I don't like just putting it in the trash unless it's pure plastic (unmarked plastic is rarely recycled). So the result for me is that I have a few piles of stuff that I will take a part before putting it in proper recycling/trash/burn, these are my biggest hurdle right now. Thank you for the video, it's given me some thought about how to manage what i need to remove more efficiently.

This is so good! I haven’t been feeling well so our place got a little bonkers but I was shocked at how quickly it took to put it back to square one. Owning less helps but also having a home for everything is a game changer. My husband will constantly ask “where does this live?” And that helps manage the things we do own. I’m also almost done with The One Thing from your recommendation and it’s been so inspiring and has helped me map out some goals that I’ve been dreaming about for a while!

When I clean, I move everything and clean under the furniture. This process will keep you from accumulating too many things since it is such a hassle to move objects to do cleaning. We live above where we work (photo studio) and the same applies for the studio. We have two kitchens, three bathrooms and two studios in the 5000sq ft studio space. Everything gets moved so we can clean the floors and the tables and kitchens. Clients might not remember a sparkling clean commercial space but for sure they would remember a dirty space.

We've already decluttered our kitchen & recently my sister & nephew helped clean out our garage. They removed 7 truck loads of stuff. We probably still have another 3 or 4 truck loads left & we hope to get rid of that in the spring. Then on to cleaning out the attic & our out building. This winter Im working on my craft room. I am amazed at how much stuff weve collected over the past 24 yrs. We dont have kids & our families are not going to want our stuff. Ugh!

I have been practicing minimalism for a long time now. And in simplicity, I have found not only freedom but better options. I am intentional about the items I buy, making sure they can be used for multiple things and my options are so much better. I can interchange my wardrobe easily and with less and more intentional home decor, I can move things throughout the house to change things up and it all looks lovely no matter how I wear it or where I put things.
