I love that consistent hi-hat "chick" you keep going. I have not been able to do that. I think I need to work on that a LOT. :) Thank you for sharing your passion with us. You're an inspiration brother.

Yes! Great comment! The hihat was the first thing I noticed. It's so simple, yet so expressive and cohesive. When the hands are busy doing other stuff, that simple add of the left foot can make such a difference to the overall cohesion of the rhythm.

Honestly although I was made fully aware of, and probably did practice left foot steady eighths on hats a bit back in the day, it wasn't until years of gigging later ...noticed I was doing it quite naturally actually. Many drum "skills" can conveniently ...just fall right into place, once we're committed to playing with other 🐈. Join a band. Just do it! = Truly the best advice for younger/learning musicians. * Musicianship grows no faster than when engaged with solid accompaniment.

5:06 sounds incredible on 1.25 speed. I worked on that triplet rhythm on the Toms and looped in around. Jeez, this reminds me of Phil Collins and his partner performing in triplet rhythm towards the audience. You could hear the audience clapping along on every beat cause they really can’t stop feeling the lively groove of the triplet groove. Adding accents to it on off beats just sounds even more musical to keep the rhythm going. Also let’s not forget, the hi-hat being added on every beat while simultaneously doing the triplets gets you to feel the lovely shuffle through the drum kit. I won’t stop playing this Tom rhythmic triplet pattern at all, exceptionally good for fills and getting people moving. Thanks a lot Jeff, your teachings really helped me become an incredible drummer, being drumming for like 8 years and now on grade 7 nearly grade 8. Just wait this year in September to play that incredible drum beat to get students moving in my Secondary School if I have time or get permission by the staff members. They are bound to dance along with this groove thanks to your teaching Jeff. I wish you a happy summer 👏😄😎☀️

If you want to really dig into tom based rhythms, latin, Cuban, and African rhythms are a great way to go. There's the strict rhythms and then all the variations which equal a well of rhythmic resources to dip into when the music calls for it.

Dude, I LOVE THIS!!! There seems to be this whole narrative of "we've outgrown the toms" lately??? Toms offer possibilities for MELODY, something that doesn't come easy on our instrument. I look at toms like razor blades, is 5 better than 3???...🤔...probably. Is 10 better than 5???...I wouldn't say so. There's a sweet spot and it's different for everyone. I will say that it's simple math. More toms, more potential melodies! (Keep up the good work Jeff, you Rock! 🥁🔥)

Love your videos, really helpful and can't wait to see what comes out of the new whsiper room. But I gotta question about this one, in particular on beat two, your hihat leg actually moves "twice" the tempo to what the hihat does. Care to elaborate on this technique at some point?
