I cannot ever imagine being bored in London - there is so much to do - there is tons for free stuff or very cheap events. I go to free lectures, art events, festivals, etc which often include free wine in amazing buildings. But living in London can be exhausting.

My wife and I just spent 7 days 6 nights in London and loved every minute of it. Although we certainly saw a lot, we only scratched the surface and saved plenty for next time. We also took a day trip to Bath on our next to last day. It was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle that is certainly London. The city is very easy to navigate. The Tube took us pretty much anywhere we wanted to go, and even the busses were easy to deal with. Took a Black Cab from St Pancras to our apartment when we arrived and took another one to Heathrow when we left. It's nice to have a cabbie with "The Knowledge" take care of you when you're coming and going. All in all, it was all very civilized. We'll be back.

As someone who has been visiting London at least once a year for a weekend for the last couple of years, these are all spot on! I would add: ditch the tube in the centre. Eg. the walk from St Paul's to Westminister may look long and horrible on the map but it's a nice stroll.

Just enough to say ive been there and thats all we wanted. This was also our 2nd trip to London so had seen most of the sites already. Took a day trip outside also. Well Done, Jess, another great video! The scale cannot be emphasised enough: London, East to West is about 30 miles (50km) and similar, North to South; for example, Central London to Hampton Court Palace is about 12 miles and 40-odd minutes by train, that is a full day's experience, if you enjoy it fully.

These are all on-point! I especially relate to #1. Day tripping from any big city to any other big city isn't a good idea for the simple reason that they each deserve more than a single day. I also personally made the #15 mistake on a past London Trip and was walking around like an over caffeinated zombie that first day.

On both trips to England (so far), I had considered doing a day trip to Paris, but ended up deciding against it. For the first day of my most recent trip, I picked up some merchandise I had ordered for pickup at Marks & Spencer, did some shopping for toothpaste, contact-lens solution, etc., and spent the balance of the afternoon and evening at Winchester Cathedral. A mistake I made was going to the wrong London station to take a train to Faversham to go on a tour of the Shepherd-Neame brewery. I boarded a train at Waterloo East, when I could have gone to St. Pancras to get a faster train. My first trip was before the high-speed services were improved and moved to St. Pancras, so I was acting on old information. I arrived late for the tour I had booked, though the staff were perfectly great about it and put me on a later tour.

Aussie living in London for 5 years now. Regarding cheaper hotels, if you count 6-8 tube stations from Charring Cross, Bank or Liverpool Street Station along any line. Then look for a smaller hotel near the tube station, you're going to find a decent rate and be 20 minutes from the centre. The hotel might not be great but you will save money.

At least 10 full days in England, and some (majority) of that in London. Keep in mind, if you are going to Hampton Court or Windsor, those are half day trips at minimum, even though they seem in the London area. You go can go by train, which takes a bit of time. Lines for Westminster Abbey can be long also. So, plan accordingly. If you happen to be in London on a date where there's a Royal Gun Salute, that's actually better than the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, involves more parading, bands, horses, cavalry, and general show than does the guard changing by itself.

We just got back from our trip and we didn’t plan anything & we loved it! We wandered around all over the city, we walked, we took the tube, we took cabs, whatever we felt like. The tube is easy and not scary. London is an amazing place. There is so much to see, we didn’t see Buckingham Palace but that was OK with me! The side streets and beautiful store fronts and restaurants were amazing! We stayed in the south bank area (after watching your video recommendation) which was artsy & had gorgeous water views! As a Londoner, I recommend this. It helps to get your bearings. Also try doing this later in the afternoon, evening. It's a great way of staying up and trying to keep up with London time and help combat jet lag. If you can stay out in the uncovered part of the bus, do so. Once you get back to the hotel, you can flop into your bed and sleep. Then the next morning you have an idea of your bearings and what you can do the next day! I do this with visiting relatives all the time!

My recommendations: 1. Plan your sleep on arrival plane, so you are on the same schedule as where you are going to land. Arriving late at night? Stay at a local hotel with pick-up service. Start day 1, refreshed with sunlight so you can see where you are going! 2. Day 2, take at a minimum, a half day tour of the city. Full day tours are the best. With a map in hand, you will start to learn the neighborhoods, how the city streets work and visit 4 to 10 major sites. The tour buses get you to each site efficiently and the tour guides are extremely knowledgeable and, in my experience, very funny. - Return to any site that you want to spend more time visiting on an other day. - I have used this technique, in major cities, all over the world, and find it easy and very satisfying when visiting a new city. 3. No time to take a tour? Hire a taxi, after rush hour, and have them drive you around for an hour or so to see the sights from the outside. May not work well in London, but was great for a visiting sister in San Francisco, with only a day to look around. 4. London is worth at least two weeks, if you have the time and money. I particularly like to explore neighborhoods, all of the sites (large and small), and spend a lot of time in museums. London has some of the best of everything to see and do in the world. 5. Public transportation, the Tube, in particular, is easy to learn, safe, inexpensive and much faster than taxis and buses. 6. The first time I visited London, 30+ years ago, I was told the food was not good. NOT TRUE!!! Some of the best food I have ever had is in London, from Sunday roast, to bangers and mash, fish and chips (and more healthy options) at the local pub, and amazing, ethnic food from all over the world. On one trip during the '80s I ate Indian food, every day, for 16 days ... I was so enamoured. The food markets offer some of the best, fresh cooked food you can find. anywhere. 7. Be prepared to walk in good shoes! 8. I first started travelling before the Internet and smart phones. Had to use a travel guide book and fax or make international phone calls to organize anything from hotels to theater tickets. - Today you can research and organize sleeping arrangements, tours, everything you will need before you arrive. - DO NOT overpack! - Bring an unlocked phone. - If you forget anything, you can buy it in London! HAVE FUN!

I was in London for about a week. When I arrived, my friend's daughter wanted to meet up with me at Picadilly Circus, which was fine by me since A, the Picadilly Line was the line from Heathrow to where my AirB&B were located! So, I got off and waited and we went to eat at a pub and got a walking tour around th area. Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park...after visiting said places, went to the AirB&B and decided to rest the next day! The day after, picked a museum I wanted to see and tour around that area. That is how I planned my trip! Took a day off and walked around the area my AirB&B were located (north London) and enjoy some of the locals and the hosts! Next to last day, went to Brixton and tour around there. Can't wait to go back and pick other spots to visit. Give myself time to rest and explore different areas. I would like to thank you because it was your site that allowed me to take notes on what to do and not to do!

(we purchased before we left the states) We didn't do any tours, I made an itinerary before we left. Lots and lots of walking. So easy to get around on the Tube, to Harry Potter and Windsor Castle. One important tip from a Londoner, never use the “rickshaws” that are parked up in Central London, you will be overcharged and they have no insurance if you get injured. Wherever possible use the underground system.

The Monument of the Great Fire has some great views too and is just a couple pounds. But nothing can beat the Shard during a sunset :D And if you don't have much time to see all the landmarks, you can take a tour on bus 24.

Agreed on the visit duration / day trips issue. I've visited 4 times over 4 years. One week (just London), then one week again with a day trip to Stonehenge, then 2 weeks with some day trips (Cliffs of Dover, Brighton, the Mansion at Bletchley Park, and a day in Liverpool), and then 1 week. On your first visit to London, there's more than enough to do & see for a week without going elsewhere. No point venturing beyond Oyster card range until near the end of week 2, even if week 2 happens the following year.

I can't sleep on airplanes. It's too noisy. People are walking by all the time. I've found that there are 6 morning flights from US airports to London. 1 each from Boston, Newark, Dulles, & Chicago, plus 2 from JFK. Leave at about 9 am local, arrive about 7:30 pm local. Then you take the Underground to your hotel and have a restful nights sleep.

Sometimes the railway has lines closed for maintenance so check if this will affect your journey to and from the airport, also there's people selling train tickets for 25 quid at Heathrow tube station walk past them and get a one way tube ticket into London for 6 instead.

If it's your first time in London, don't go outside the city. there are endless things to see and do. But...there are also plenty of things to do outside London. When I come to London, I usually intend doing one day outside of the city. Last time I spent only two days in London and then went to St Albans (highly recommended), Leicester, Huddersfield, Leeds and Manchester. About the tube- if you learn how to read the map, then it's not scary at all. I love the tube, but it's also fun to walk in London because when you walk, you can see things that you never noticed before (small tip- don't ride the tube between Leicester square and Piccadilly. It's 2 minutes walk). If you want to get to know the tube really well, I recommend watching Geoff Marshal's youtube channel.

Last week was warm and dry. This week has been non stop rain. Even Tower bridge was flooded. Also good pair of walking shoes as that's the best way to do the touristy bit. If you want to get out of the manic City and West End you can use the underground to West London ( Shepherds Bush for West Field shopping centre, Hammersmith, Richmond on the Thames for starters) Ealing which is 10 minutes from Paddington station and is also on the underground. All these areas have plenty of restaurants, bars, pubs. Get over to Richmond Park on a clear chilly morning. Richmond Park is the largest Royal park in London and has red fallow deer as local residents. (District Line on the underground.)

I would think that visitors from the USA might need to be advised NEVER to hire a car to see London, use your feet, taxi, bus, tube or train. As for the tube and steps the only lines in central London which may be step only are on the District, Circle & Metropolitan lines, which are 'sub surface'. All the other lines on the tube are deep level and may have some steps but otherwise use escalators, the exceptions being Russell Square & Covent Garden which are lift only. Also the deep level tubes are not very 'luggage friendly', especially in the rush hour! Travelling from Heathrow at 08.00 in to say Holborn, with 2 large cases would be a struggle at best, if not downright unpopular!
