What NOT to Do in London (if you want a local experience)

If you're trying to visit London like you live here (that's what my whole channel is about!) then these are the things to avoid doing while in London. This includes some well-known attractions and some experiences that no Londoner would ever be caught dead doing!
Hey if you want to do these things that's totally fine, but for travelers who want to get off the beaten path and experience London in a way that's different from the typical touristy stuff that doesn't show the real, authentic side of the city, skip these things. Believe it or not, Changing the Guard is not an "authentic" London experience, nor are those "famous" London pubs like the Ye Old Cheshire Cheese (or whatever it's called, idk!)

Wandering around department stores in London is not about buying, it’s the experience of seeing what’s there and the people. I rarely buy when I’m traveling on the other side of the world. Just have to lug it around. Remembering experiences, people and sights last so much longer than things. Yes, Carnaby and Liberty - definitely a must. Love your vids, Jess.

I agree. Unless a person is a real adventurer/explorer, I recommend the HoHo buses in any city. You get the lay out of the city and you're never going to be able to visit everything on their route. Pick a few things and then it'll give you an idea of what to go see on your own when you get your legs. The banter is cute, too.

I too use HOHO buses to get my bearings in a city I've never been to, then I can go back and see what I want. I wouldn't if I have done a lot of research or had been there before however.

I have nothing against hop on hop off buses, if you have not much time they allow you to see most of the city, so why not, But if you take time do do some research you can do that with public transport as well, there's a bus route in London (now I don't remember the number, maybe 11, I'm not sure) which takes you from the Tower of London to Trafalgar Square through St Paul's. at a fraction of the price of a hop on hop off you see a lot of the city. I personally like it that way.

@@lorettabertoli3736 11 or 15 it is, and on weekends, on the 15 route you get the old busses, which is really cool. another great bus to take for the other half of touristy things (trafalgar sq, victoria, piccadilly) is the 24.... I really dont like the HOHO for being so expensive, when you around and see the same things for 1,50pounds on the hopper fare...

Jess does admit to using them when her folks only had a short time in London. When I lived there, the 24 bus was great, but when I went last year, they had shut down streets to invite a few protesters to shut down transportation, so the HoHo buses saved my trip. Employees at the stops were always helpful, even when I had a ticket for their competitor's bus. I'm also a downstairs person on buses, had lots of room & no concern about pickpockets. Went directly to places I wanted to go, lots of museums & castles on the routes..

This is like saying "If you are in Paris, don't go to the Louvre, don't see the Eiffel tower, don't walk down the Left bank etc." If you have never been to London, then Do walk through Piccadilly Circus and take some snaps, and if you want half price ticket to the theatre from TKTS, then you have no choice but to go to Leicester Square. As for Changing of the Guard, yes it can get crowded in summer, but 1. it is ever so British, 2. it is outside Buckingham Palace, that you are going to want to see anyway, 3. IT'S FREE!!! Look, you're a tourist, you have to do the tourist things once.

Hi, Jess, brilliant video. I 100 per cent agree on the places you advise people not to visit. I would add one more, That Pedestrian Crossing, you know the one I mean, it's probably been repainted 100 times since they walked on it and I'm not certain it's even in exactly the same place and you will annoy the locals who want to drive along the road. If you want an elevated view of London and are reasonably fit and dont fancy the London Eye, you could go to the top of the Monument, although it isn't free. Looking forward to your next video soon.

A good walk away from the tourists in London is Hampstead heath which you can observe the locals enjoying the fresh air and views with their families and pets .

I agree with all of your suggestions. And, yes, people should pick one area of town each day so they don’t spend too much time in transport. Be sure to bring good walking shoes and I like to carry a little “day pack” on my back with maps, water bottle, light jacket so that my arms are free. I never spend time “shopping” on vacation - why? It’s more fun to visit sites, explore neighborhoods, admire the architecture and people watch. Never understand why people would pay huge money to ride the London Eye! Take the inexpensive boat down to Greenwich for the day and get a wonderful view of London from the Observatory on the hill!

  • @studogable

We're in agreement for most of this. Most of these I avoided. I did the London Eye; it's the only thing about the trip that I regret. I was caught in the Changing of the Guard after my Buckingham Palace tour; thankfully, the police were enforcing a corridor through the crowd, so I got out of there pronto. The London Dungeon looks cool, though. I understand that it's rather London-specific, and might not belong with the lame, find-them-everywhere attractions you've grouped it with.

Oh, and please avoid Winter Wonderland AT ALL COSTS!!! It's trying to recreate German or Austrian Christmas Markets; as a German, I can honestly say, that failed. A lot. I visited The National Gallery, The Tower of London, Tower Bridge and The Westminster Abbey! Thanks! Now I don't feel like the only weirdo. Because I generally dislike "attractions" (what some of us Mainers call roach traps), I travel alone. I sometimes rent an apartment and live almost entirely in a single neighborhood until the initial illusion of a new place wears off. This is when the neighborhood becomes a part of me. If someone wants to see the Changing of the Guards I recommend seeing it at Windsor Castle instead (if you're planning on visiting the castle on your trip). So many less people, you're much closer to the guards instead of behind the gates like in Buckingham Palace, and seeing them walk around the castle grounds and bark at people who are in their way is hilarious! They don't do it every day, so check the schedule in advanced and then plan your day trip to Windsor.

So I am guilty of visiting Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Street and Madame Tussauds. But to be honest Madame Tussauds was so much fun, I would not want to miss it. It was crazy expensive though and also pretty crowded, so yes and yes and they do have several museums like it around the world, but London is still the OG. Oxford Street was pretty terrible, but I wanted to get to Primark for their better than average collection of Harry Potter stuff (in German Primark Ravenclaw stuff is pretty hard to come by) and it was an experience to see shops with djs in them - also we wanted to go see a pretty cool bookshop nearby. And Piccadilly Circus was the first stop we left the tube at, just to feel that you are actually in London. For tourists you sometimes still need to see the touristy stuff, you have seen a million times online to know that you are actually there. I still would want to go to Harrods - see how it compares to Galerie Lafayette or KaDeWe, but maybe check out Selfridges and Liberty too.

Totally agree with these with a few minor exceptions. If you're going to London for the first time the HOHO bus tour is a good way to get oriented. Skip the London eye and the awful four, they don't really give you a good sense for London at all. I've loved all your videos until this one. I think you've tripped up a little bit. The London Dungeon really is good fun and I do not believe that this specific history "can be experienced in any other city in the World". I also was very saddened at your disdain for two other things. The London Eye is a must. Quite simply there is no other possible way to see the skyline at an affordable price. And in any case, the South Bank is an enjoyable place to experience. Finally, I just do not get at all your dismissal of Changing of the Guard. For one thing, this is not a 'Tourist Attraction' actually, but a tradition that is multiples older than your actual country. It is also a spectacle that is genuinely enjoyed by English people. It is what we do best, and to dismiss it as 'touristy' is a mistake. So unfortunately, although this is very nearly another good video, you have dropped the ball once or twice on this one, I'm afraid. 'A' for effort and production, though.

As for Piccadilly, I had to wait there for my friend's daughter (who lives out in England) to take me around the area. And it was the Picadilly Line that took me to my main destination. I agree with everything you say in this video. I try to visit once a year but I never go near oxford street and Piccadilly unless it’s absolutely necessary. The City (business area) and Embankment is lovely for a dawn stroll though, if you like getting out and about early and avoid the crowds.

I am an old guy and I did enjoy the London Dungeon. Noted the huge block long crowds of teenagers (mostly) waiting to get in. Took note and got an advanced ticket and walked right in. Take a ride on the London Ducks (WWII GMC DUKW) amphibious tours located beside the London Eye for a much more exciting voyage. I did both Harrod's and Selfridges on two different trips. Did the quick escalator trip and browsed briefly what interested me just to say I did it and am glad I did. I also stopped inside that shop from Absolutely Fabulous just to say I was there. I too avoided the Changing at Buck and recommend highly the Horse Guard Parade in lieu of and you can add Churchill's Underground War Cabinet Rooms in less time.

Some of us who will visit London for the first time might want to go to Harrods. And we might buy something there. You may not like shopping but some people do. And yes, it’s also the experience in visiting Harrods that would also be a good thing for new visitors. So what if folks have to go to these tacky stores that sell souvenirs. I’ve been to so many countries and I still buy refrigerator magnets, some to give as gifts. People do appreciate being given little things like that. And there’s nothing wrong with Hop On Hop Off. It’s a good way to first familiarize yourself around the city. And definitely all the touristy places we will visit and loads more places to go because our planned visit is for 10 days, coming in from Paris.

Oh my, the last time I visited London was in '88. I saw loads of major attractions with no one around - I mean no one was at Buckingham Palace or Hyde Park... none of the sites. The most crowded (and there were still not many people few people), aside from the Tower of London, was The London Tower Bridge. (After that trip I'd never go to the Tower of London again - they rush people through like cattle, hardly giving your eyes the time to focus on the crown jewels.) Even Big Ben was relatively empty and easy to walk about in. Oxford street, the lot. We took the bus tour and used the tube and walked and walked and walked, always looking for cheap, good takeaway eateries away from the action (we asked for opinions on the street and got directed to some good places). What a nightmare they appear to be now from the pictures shown. No doubt Americans engaging in international travel has likewise increased dramatically in over 30 years.

  • @1BLiViON1
    @1BLiViON14 жыл бұрын

Oxford Circus/Street has really cleaned up issues with congestion. It's not as much of a pain to walk through as it used to be, and traffic has been cleared up. What you said about M&M's world is entirely accurate. I'm born and raised in London, and I can say that M&M's world is just a poor expense of time. Leicester Square is mostly used for cinematic premieres, it's the place to go if you want to go and see celebs occasionally debuting huge films and when the biggest films hit the UK. Kinda the centre of UK cinema, but that doesn't really happen as often anymore, so the cinemas there are now just overpriced. Piccadilly is good for street performers, and is more for clubbing, gambling (lots of casinos). Other than that, it's only the junction between Leicester Square, Regent Street, Soho, Chinatown, St James, Mayfair, etc. All of which have more interesting things to see than Piccadilly itself. I actually recommend tourists use one of the bus tours on their first day, because London is a huge city and it's very easy to get lost. It's good to familiarise yourself with the city's transport routes, and see the landmarks so you know where you're going for the rest of the trip. Though, to be fair, you could just use a normal bus journey instead. Your awful 4's list was spot on. Perfect. Yes. Also add the Sherlock Museum. Regent's Park, which is close to Madame Tussaud's is a gorgeous park that I recommend people visit. I disagree with the avoidance of pubs if you are trying for a local experience. There are definitely pubs worth going to in central London, but they are hidden in the side roads of areas off of the main streets. Mayfair, Soho, Fitzrovia, Camden, have great pubs. People who work in London offices usually use the pubs for after-work drinks, and if there is a sporting event on, pubs will be packed. I would never recommend avoiding a pub for a local experience. Your recommendation of Notting Hill is perfect. Changing the guard is traditional, but that's it. You're right. If you want to know about London history and tradition, then of course you kinda have to see it once in your life, but Buckingham Palace is traditional enough that you don't need it. As a London local, the changing of the guard only tells me roughly what time of day it is. other than that, avoid like the plague. Hahahahahaha souvenir shops. Spot on.

I concur also on London Eye and Changing of the Guard. I went on a tour of Buckingham Palace, which wasn't a highlight of my last trip, but it was nothing to sneeze at. The Changing was happening as I exited; I got the hell out of there. Were I to go again, I would swap the Sky Garden (which was, unbeknownst, right next to my hotel on Tower Hill) for the Eye. Of all the things I did in London, the Eye is the only one I would advise against.

Yes it's busy but if you go at the right time then you can enjoy the street and then your not having to stress about the busy areas. London has a lot to offer. Sometimes too much. So yeah definitely agree with the video here. But visit some of the parks too and some of the shopping centres like Westfield. They are pretty good but be careful.

I agree, and I lived in NY(Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx). I saw similarities between NY and Atlanta(another place I lived) to London. I have been to the attractions there so I don't feel like I'm missing out. You see one, you see all. Examples: Piccadilly Circus is Herald Square in NY; Harrod's is Macy at Herald Square.I've been to Madame Tussaud's in NY several times and I loved it. There's a small Ferris Wheel in Atlanta where a developer from England copied the London Eye located near CNN, GA Aquarium, and the World of Coca Cola(and I've been to all of them). My favorite hangout spot was Times Square, where the world crosses. I also rode on the Double Decker bus in NY and Las Vegas, Nevada(which is called the Deuce). Therefore, I'm glad that I can view these free videos online so it will save me some money. Thank you for the update.

The awful four (I would take out the wax museum and put in the London Bridge Experience m'self) are mostly if you're a family traveling. The kids won't be wowed by museums and pubs all day and they don't care about the churches and history. It's sort of like, we have this wonderful big festival here every year in my city. 60 marquis tents are put up, each hosted by a different country and there's food, dance, crafts and of course people to talk to. But if you have kids, you'll need to go to the playground and/or paddleboats at some point in the day because kids won't be impressed by food from 60 countries.
