15 minutes of FILM street photography in London | Rollei 35S Kodak Portra 400
The street photography POV saga returns, this time on 35mm film. Dive into Canary Wharf yet again, but this time using a vintage Rollei 35S film camera. I loaded some Portra 400 and started looking at the world through the 40mm fixed lens of this pocket camera. There's something magic about film photography, retrieving the scans from the lab was an amazing feeling! I hope you can get excited about this as well. A few notes below:
Canary Wharf is a business district of London. Its amazing architecture, characterised by tall buildings in steel and glass, offers some amazing possibilities in terms of composition and framing.

I really like your photos. My favourite is the first one with the waves in the floor. Nice effect. The look of the Portra on this cloudy day is amazing throug the rollei. Other films I didn't like so much. The Portra 400 comforts the sharpness I think. Also interesting style - compose, wait for subject, shoot. Not that it's new, however you get it across very straightforward - works perfectly ;P

Thanks a lot for such a thoughtful comment! I just love Portra, somehow it works great in any lighting scenario. I find quite important to have a focus point in street photography so shooting without a human element don't work that well... like you said I prefer to push my luck a little bit waiting for the right moment
I really enjoyed this photo walk! The Rollie is a really cool little camera!

Thank you so much 😊 it really is, the form factor is just amazing for stealthy street photography! New video coming tomorrow, shooting at night in Soho with it 😎
I just walked Seattle with my granddaughter shopping for her school cloths. Took a small pocketable Olympus point and shoot. Wow it was so fun to just point and shoot a small camera not worrying about anything other than composition. Can’t wait to get the film back from the Lab.

That's a great feeling, isn't it? Having those really simple cameras is very refreshing for me, stepping away from the luxury of (almost) infinite possibilities and shots that digital provides. I'm glad to see you on the channel! Thank you and keep shooting!
Hi Michele, great video I especially loved when you mention the f stops your using .. I just got a Rollie and will go shoot it in very excited about this camera .. keep up the good work and keep shooting .. Cheers Tom.

Thank you so much Tom! I have made so many photos with the Rollei now, it's really one of my favourite cameras of all time. You will enjoy it for sure! I also have more videos coming but it has been tough these months so it might still take a while... thank you again for the motivation!

Great video! For best results try exposing with sunny 16. At least double check the light meter indicator with your gut, the eye always wins. I prefer it over the light meter of the Rollei.

Thanks Julian! I do expose using the sunny16 rule all the time, even though I have to say that the light meter is quite spot on when there's no difficult scene to read 😊
lovely video and photos Michele. I got one of these recently and can't wait to take it for a spin. What batteries are you using by the way?

Thanks a lot Ernest! It's such a great camera for street photography, even though there's very little content about it on KZread. I don't remember the precise model but you have to buy a brass adapter in order to use it with button-like modern batteries because it originally ran on some obsolete batteries. You will find it on Google with no issues, I purchased both the adapter and the batteries on ebay or Amazon a long time ago! Let me know how it goes, I will upload again using cinestill800T so you might want to stay tuned 😉

Ciao Michele, bellissime foto e video! Ho lo stesso corpo macchina e sto provando tanti rullini 😊 Volevo chiederti una informazione, che paraluce hai messo sull'obiettivo? È molto carino. Grazie in anticipo, buona giornata 😉
@michelefranciotta

Do you edit your photos on Photoshop/ lightroom after scanning?
@michelefranciotta
4 ай бұрын
I only adjust the temperature and balance the colours when I'm not satisfied with the result from the scanning process, I would say 90% of the look is "organic" from the film stock. I mostly use Lightroom for a quick adjustment
What’s your go-to film stock?
@michelefranciotta

Tough question! Out of the most consumed ones I would say Kodak Gold or Portra 400. I am shooting quite a lot of Ektar as well these days and I'm having good results. On the 120 format I like experimenting with slide film as well, Ektachrome most of the time.

@@michelefranciotta Thank you for your answers. I’m new to film photography, and is in the stage of experimenting different brands and types of films😅. Your suggestions help me narrow my choices down a-lot!.
Canary, as in the bird. Rollei , as in roly poly.

Rollei is pronounced like I do in German, you can look it up. Since the brand is from Germany it is more correct to pronounce it like "roll eye", rather than the English version "roly"
