in your title you call it a ''useless'' machine but seeing as this is highly entertaining to watch, i'd argue that this machine isn't useless at all. it's use is to entertain anyone who watches this video , seeing this piece of engineering at work.

This demonstrates why birds are never hit by propeller blades on windmills. The mechanical synchronization with the turntable keeps them out of harms way.

This is by far the best film you have yet done BB. The attention to detail is impressive in itself. Bravo my intellectual friend.

This is both beautiful and an engineering marvel :) Fitting all these mechanisms together must have taken days!

Thank you Adrien. I've been at it pretty much solid for the last 2 weeks, if you count the filming in as well - I built it, then had to take it apart and rebuild it for the filming of it! Glad you liked it.

Hi SN. Fair comment, and thanks for watching. You've actually given me the idea for my next video - I wasn't sure what to do next, but I think a making of, FAQs and long run footage of the machine might appeal to some people who liked this video. I'll put that together over the next few days or so.
Are all the parts bent or drilled off center 🤷♂️ As an aircraft mechanic with minor machining experience it triggers ocd. While at the same time adds a beautiful charm of imperfection and character. I really need to get out more. Cool video 👍😎

Thanks for watching, glad you liked it. The parts are fine, however the motor shaft is slightly the wrong size. The parts are Meccano, and the motor is a non-Meccano motor. I did eventually put a brass sleeve on it to fill it out, but that was only for the later mechanisms where you can't really see the shaft anyway.
This is awesome! I wondered what you had been up to! The title is great haha I was also grinning the whole time while watching. There's just something about watching mechanisms do their thing. 😄

Thanks. I've been working at this more or less solid for the last 2 weeks. Meccano is all about mechanisms after all, so I thought focussing in on them was a good idea. There is an entire YT topic of people rendering mechanisms, or doing them in lego, and it gets loads of views, so I thought I would have a try. It seems successful so far. Also give a nod to your do-nothing machine from a few months back, which I had in the back of my head whilst doing this!
The abacus is just chilling
Love the video, I want to know where to find all those gears?
@BaldyMakesStuff

It's made out of vintage Meccano. They don't make metal gears like that new any more. E-bay or Meccano dealers would be your best bet. Thanks for watching.

Thanks. I'm shell shocked. It's doing 160 views an hour just at the minute, and that hourly figure keeps on going up. I'm starting to think it might end up doing really big numbers.

A fun contraption (contrivance?). If you hook this up to your alarm clock, you may be able to use it to wind a mechanical bird's spring every morning. Cheers from Canada :-)

The motor shaft in the first 2 or 3 mechanisms is not exactly 4.1mm is it?

No, it's a non-Meccano motor.
I miss these old constructor kits. They are so much fun too bad they don't sell them anymore (atleast where i live) my dad has 2 kits from his childhood i got my hands on them and restored them into working condition.

how do the sack bag mechanism work?
@BaldyMakesStuff
Жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew, sorry for the delay in coming back to you, this one slipped through. The mechanism works because as the arm rotates it varies the amount of cord available from the pivot point - the further away the pulley on the arm is from the other pulley, the more cord is drawn in. As it gets nearer to the pivot point it lets it out, and the rotation makes the movement automatically reverse. That's probably about as clear as mud!
