Boom! It's very simple really. MML has no sand and tons of polymers, so there's very little capillary action. Nice video. I like it.

Excellent! You are right on target that the reason for ingress into the kerdi band joints is capillary attraction with the capillary forming large particulate of thinset as recommended by Schluter. Sounds like you found the winner of this age old problem. I have not used hydra ban sheet membrane but I bet it has a closer nap than Kerdi - that alone reduces the tendency to form capillaries. Remember: Those tall redwood trees don't have pumps hidden in their trunks and the primary way to get water to the tops of those trees is capillary action in the wood... and those are some tall trees!

Isaac I love these videos. Watching someone who is highly skilled and has a high level of integrity helps give me hope for the possibility that more people will treat each other with respect. I have one piece of advice on your habits. As someone who didn't wear hearing protection for the first 20 or more years of my use of saws and such I can tell you that it will almost certainly affect you down the road if you don't start. I now have tinitis and it sucks. And after the problem began it was so obvious how simple it is to wear one of the plastic band type earplugs and let it hang on my neck when I take it out. Your kids will be glad you can hear them when you get old.

I really appreciate all these videos. We are currently building (in a pandemic where everything is super costly) a home to fit our severely handicapped daughter. We aren't able to afford to hire out a lot of things, like building her a zero barrier entry shower to wheel her into, so we are doing it ourselves using a lot of knowledge we've gained from watching your channel. Thanks for making good, clean instructional content!

Thx for the testing and info✌🏻

I’m finally using Laticrete products and can’t wait to see how they perform. I do like how they give you more options than Kerdi. You can use sealant on seams and screw heads only, or you can use 2 inch mesh tape with Hydroban on seams and screw heads only, or you can use their Kerdi knockoff banding and corners. The foam board is a lot stronger than Schluters board and you don’t need to use washers to attach to studs. I do like the fact that you can use hydroban on any of their applications for the “sketchy spots”. I’m going to try their Strata mat and Strata heat mats as well.

The multimax lite is great stuff. I like the hydroban/hydrobarrier with the anti-fracture fabric opposed to using sheet membrane, no build up in the corners / curb rap, especially when installing sheet mosaic. I like to have no doubt on my waterproofing and sheet membrane leaves me second guessing or hoping it last past warranty.

Hi , nice videos, very well explained and entertaining. A question, would you use hydro ban membrane ,hydro ban liquid , or regard liquid membrane in a shower bench? and also how long should you wait before applying this membranes over a new dry pack deck mud? I read on at article from sakrete saying that Tiling should begin within 16 hours of mortar bed installation. After 24 hours, the mortar bed enters a “green” state and cannot have tile adhered for 28 days. What can you say about this. Thank you.

Laticrete multimax and laticrete 254 platinum are like epoxy. Sticky as hell. Probably the most expensive thinsets in the market today. Why all these tests people ask?? I believe a shower should be as waterproof as a swimming pool.....Kerdi with unmodified thinsets is not gonna cut it. I have high standards and won't settle for mediocre waterproofing. I cant get hydroban products near me , so I would be interested in the multimax(which I can get) used with kerdi. I realize also that Schluter won't honor their warranty if other products are used in their system so a test that is conclusive would be nice to see. Also how did the 8+9 work as a bonding agent to kerdi band and kerdi?

Isaac, Thanks for the update! Yes, I would like to see your test using the Laticrete Multimax Lite Thin Set with Schluter Kerdi. I've already purchased and installed Kerdi Board, poured a Mud Bed and have Kerdi Membrane and Kerdi Ban.......bought this stuff over a year ago. So, I'm kind of stuck with it. Was wondering about using the Laticrete Thin Set in place of Schulter Thin Set to lay the membrane across mud bed and cover seams, corners and screw holes? Not too late to throw everything out and start over, but kind of $$$$.

I'm in the exact same position as you E G. I bought a Kerdi shower tray and drain over a year ago. I have the Kerdi board on the walls and then started watching all these videos to make sure I get the waterproofing and install correct. Now I'm totally paranoid that it will leak! I've been dragging my feet to get this job done but I want make sure it is water tight and I will have no issues in the future. I'll have at least $3500 in just the shower with all the Kerdi products and marble. I don't ever want to remove it - it's my forever shower if you know what I mean. As of today I'm thinking that I'm going to use Laticrete Hydro Ban over top the Kerdi shower tray and Kerdi band. I'm going to tile the walls first leaving the bottom row untiled. This will leave about 12" from the floor up with no tile. After installing the shower tray, dairn and Kerdi band per Kerdi instructions I'm going to let that dry for a couple of days and then coat everything with Laticrete Hydro Ban. Basically making a pan liner with the Laticrete Hydro Ban over top the Kerdi products. After that I will do a leak test and I hope all goes well. If it does then I will lay the floor tile and then the last bottom row of the wall tile. Then grout! My wife might divorce me if I don't get the shower done. Its going on 2 months!

Watch any of Sal's videos on thinsets. For showers I use Laticrete 254. It bonds to everything; any tile, backerboard, substrate, membrane, plastic etc.... The system I like uses Wedi wall panels, SubLiner Dry over mud bed bonded to a Laticrete drain and the perimeter of the pan sealed to the wall board with Hydroban and 6 inch fleece tape. So don't throw anything out and waste your $$$. You can mix and match with positive results.

I've watched everyone of Sal DiBlasi's & Bob Doyle's video as Isaac's videos. All are professionals at what they Do! The difference with Isaac is, he spends the time too "TEST" all these products and does it openly for everyone too see and learn as he does himself. Sal & Bob are just showing you HOW to do it and Nothing about does the product "Do What It Says." I've seen the video call between Isaac and Sal with regards to Kerdi Schluter.......Sal takes the Don't Ask, Don't Tell approach. Isaac calls it based on the Test Result & Manufacture Claims! Isaac is more like the Politician you voted for and DIDN"T forget what and Who he is suppose too be representing. I have "Monolithic Slab" that had a Fiber Glass Shower Insert that I removed. I've already made framing adjustments (max. opening) and half wall, installed 1/2" Kerdi Board from floor up to 9 ft. ceilings on 2 sides and 42" on 1 side. Then need to pour "Mud Deck Floor for correct pitch and leveling. Built Shower Curb from 2x4 & 4x4 pressure treated lumber and attached to existing slab. Inside opening in now 48" x 37". I want to know can I cover the Mud Floor with (all ready purchased) Kerdi membrane using Kerdi Band & over Kerdi Board Screws & Kerdi Board joints with the "Latacrite Multimax Lite Adhesive" in place of the Kerdi Thin Set? Was also wondering about whether or not to completely coat everything with same Latacrite or Red Guard or Ardex 8+9? My house and if I hadn't been procrastinating all this would have been do before Isaac found these issues and I would really BE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE! The 1/2" Kerdi Board has been up over a year.....I have the receipts for when and where I bought the Kerdi materials just don't want the drama with taking what I haven't used back based on the purchase date.

I wonder how well the Multimax will bond Hydro Ban membrane to the Schluter Kerdi membrane? Why? Kerdi shower bases are easier to find and way cheaper. I am thinking of using the Kerdi base but then place Hydro Ban membrane over it and finish the rest out with Hydro Ban board and band. With the power of Multimax to bond Hydro to Hydro, I'd have excellent waterproof barrier on a very inexpensive base that was extremely quick to install!!

@TileCoach Hey man love the channel thank for all the great info I am a Tile installer From FL and really love our trade thank you so much for helping us all out I've grown as an installer watching you, Sal and Lamburg. I have a question for you on these unsanded thinsets, so as of the last 3 years i have been completely hooked on Ardex x5 x77 and x90. I've pretty much only used these thinsets on every install with the occasional x4 job. and about 3 years ago i tried some PRO-LITE thinset from HD and could not stand using it, it seemed great for small tiles but found it hard to break down the ridges when installing LFT even mixing it to the wetter consistency, so i was scared to try any other brand of LITE-TS until my current job after seeing some of your videos i felt encouraged to give Laticrete TRI-LITE a go and it actually ended up costing me about $500 because i was using it to install a 24x48 tile that was envelope cut into a shower pan. i could not get even %50-%60 coverage using a half inch on the floor and a half inch back-butter (and even standing and bouncing on the tiles not joking). and because i kept having to pull the tiles up to check coverage and re-apply i ended up breaking 2 of the tiles. and had to just pull the tiles and clean everything and had to just throw away 2 bags of thinset then recut the next day and do it with x77. Sorry for getting longwinded but my question basically is have you used tri-lite and how does it compare to multimax-lite and what are your thoughts on using Lite Thinsets to install tile vs. just using them for waterproofing? i really hope you see this haha, or anyone else who might be able to give some insight it would be much appreciated. Also the tri-lite seemed to have no potlife and skinned over way to fast.

Hello Isaac, My name is Luis I work mostly with schluter systems. Not that I don't trust laticrete but wouldn't it be more fair of a competition if you compare this test with schluter but using modified all set thinset. Because the multimedia lite to my knowledge it would be the equivalent to all set, no? Also, there is the schluter keeping coll, which is not available on the us which is suppose to be for Kerri band and corners. Ps: isnt using another layer of waterproofing on top of all the water proofing you do with schluter a little too much and defies the whole purpose of using schluter waterproof membrane in the first place. Also if you missinstall that layer of liquid waterproofing you use on top of the schluter waterproofing you might run in the problem and water or water vapor might get stuck between the membrane and the second layer of water proofing making it impossible to ever dry? Just opinions and comments over here. Not trying to be annoying. Love the videos. Keep it up.

Question: After applying hydro ban roll-on liquid membrane to the shower deck and walls as well as all inside/outside corners and edges, i then reinforced all inside/outside corners and edges with MMX Lite and prefabricated fleeces and banding. (1) Is this wrong? (2) Is this a mistake, is this okay, or is it not preferred? I will have the time to flood test for minimum of 10 days.

I still don't understand why tile setters use any cementious material when "waterproofing". Use a hybrid polyurethane sealant and test - I suspect you'd see zero leakage so long as no holidays/birdmouth. There's a reason so many like liquid sealants like RedGard/Hydroban etc. I'd use foam board and the approved sealant for all joints/changes of plane.

  • @adamspringer1

In a similar position as you. The box store suggested Mapei Aqua Defense because that's what they have in stock. This is what I posted above to another person's comment which is the direction I think that I am going: I'm in the exact same position as you E G.

@@adamspringer1 If you follow the Kerdi directions you will be fine. I am just trying to make the install bullet proof as I am repairing a failed traditional shower system install. The key is to get the correct amount of thinset. I am going to overlap more than the 2" since I have plenty of membrane. My shower has been apart since Halloween... wife is not happy at all.

@@HiddenEarnings Ditto on the bullet proofing. I do not want it to leak and watching these KZread videos of shower failures has me freaked out. Kind of like self-diagnosing medical problems on the internet. I do not want to be pulling the shower out . . . ever! As insurance, I'm going to buy 1 gallon of Hydro Ban ($118) to go over top the Kerdi shower pan membrane and about 12 inches up the Kerdi wall. I have two 45 degree corners that I'm afraid will not seal well when it is done.

Come on man! Check your knowledge before you state something. Regular Kedri membrane is OK to use in residential steam showers(DS is for commercial 24/7 use steam showers), and it's thinner, with double layer you get 1/16 build up at most. And with hydroban you get like 1/8 build up at least. Not good for 2*2 mosaic shower pan installation.

This is so unnecessary... a shower will never be fully loaded with water for 2 days like that. Not even the membrane will have direct contact with the water in that proportion for 2 days. This systems are a conjunction of waterproofing membrane, mortar, tile, grout, silicone... so many things are on top of the membrane. Both systems will work just fine, just pick the color you prefer and stop making so much drama about tile installation. Pick Orange or pick gray, even the old red that will always work.
