Like most parks, this one has a walking path that is designed as an access road for service vehicles. The only problem is that they are usually the exact width of a utility truck. In this case the slight slope, combined with the ice, and a 15,000 pound truck with a load that sloshes back and forth all added up to the truck sliding into the wood chips, which were surprisingly deep and soft. The reason I wanted to pull him out in neutral and tried that first, was because I didn’t want his tires to spin and cause it to sink or slide anymore. But my truck on ice as well didn’t have the ability to anchor in place enough to do that, so I had to have him help in reverse. Luckily he did a good job of giving enough power to help get out of the hole, but not enough to dig back in deeper

They make it extra deep and soft on purpose around public playgrounds like these, so that kids potentially doesn't hurt themselves as bad if they jump or fall of the top of a slide, a swing or similar.

Don't sell yourself short Casey. If the truck can do it I am sure there is a very good chance you can do more things like that. You have the common sense and technical skill to get it done. Sometimes a little unorthodox but safe. Enjoy the snow. Hopefully more coming soon.

Good morning Casey and OH CRAP! I can't believe that happened! Actually several years ago the home heating oil deliver truck drove over my septic tank and broke through! What a mess, they had to pay for a new tank and install. They had been told about the tank many times , and were told to not back up beyond the front of the Garage, but a new driver did not get the message! Have a good day Casey!

@@DavesW 50 years ago I was trained to be a lineman. A very dangerous job. While in training, my assigned trainer would always ask that question to me at the end of each day to be sure I learned how to safely do that job. My flight instructor also asked me that question and many versions of that question when we debriefed after a training flight. That was very helpful. So, you just haven't been in a situation that required debriefing. It happens all of the time. Or should. It is very helpful.

100% agree on the stupidly bright LED strobes. All they do is blind drivers. I almost hit a cop (who was actually wearing high viz) directing traffic around an accident scene because the strobes on the dozen emergency vehicles where blindingly bright and causing strobe spots in my eyes. Fortunately for the cop, I was creeping through at 2mph since I was driving nearly blind. Brighter isn't better. More isn't better. The slow roller lights like on your truck are perfect since they light up the area and give the eyes time to register what's around. The super bright LED strobes are too fast and too much light.

Morning Casey, You did a fantastic job of extracating that septic truck with limited points to pull from. The few trees available were a big help.

I marvel at the physics involved in determining the angles and how the various cables are situated. Great job.

short story... I didn't even see the flagman until I went by. I was blinded by the lights on the fire truck.

I agree with your comment about the old school beacon lights - too many times the new LED's are so bright that they are a hazard to oncoming traffic. I know there's a want/need to be seen, but there really should be some way of being able to dim them down when the rig is stationary so that oncoming traffic isn't at risk because of the lights. I don't do anywhere as much driving at night now as I used to, and there have been times when I've had to reach on my dash for my sunglasses because the flashing lights ahead of me were so bright they hurt my eyes.

People would not believe how heavy that truck and loaded tank are.LOL.

what a well done recovery Casey! Perfectly executed! the slide cam was a perfect angle too! the old school flashing light is awesome. I never liked bright flashy things and come to find out at a concert recently I have flicker vertigo. Super not rad when you keel over in a group of strangers during an insanely crazy lightshow during an opening act. I rallied for the main show and now I know why I never liked blinking lights ever.

These videos of yours with the actual tow truck are my favorite videos the ones with the track Jeeps are fun also never been a big fan of the carriers or flatbeds I ran both tow trucks and flatbeds and prefer the tow trucks over the flatbeds every time

Agree 100% on the old school lights vs LED's. Around here they cannot figure out why everybody keeps running into the back of snow plows and State Patrol cars at night. I told them, those fancy LED's you have are disorienting to people coming up on you. Go back to regular flashing lights and most of the problem is solved.

Yup. The Rotating Beacon's beam goes much farther , and "paints" a spot of light visible around corners , and individual roto's , or individual PAR35's can be aimed UP a bit in elevation to "paint" the 2nd or 3rd floors of buildings etc. , making them visible to distant traffic sooner. SURE the LED's have a MUCH smaller current draw , and the constantly changing PATTERNS help to battle the "hypnosis effect" that some lame brained drivers have , but I think EVERY EMS & FD Apparatus should have AT LEAST ONE old school beacon topside.

I bet that guy's first reaction to when he got stuck was something like "Ah shit"

When I was in High School, I took Geometry and Algebra. At the time, I thought to my 16 year old self, "what good is all of this?" I do a lot of fabrication in my line of work. (Heavy equipment mechanic/fabricator) I use Geometry all the time. I even use Algebra from time to time. Actually I use EVERYTHING that I was taught in school. The only subject that I ever failed was typing. I still type, but I only use 2 fingers because my hands are so big. Using 2 fingers in typing class is of course a fail. I guess that I am just to uncoordinated to ever learn how to type. LOL But, I get by.

Your comment near the end about old school lights is right on the money! I'm a retired truck driver that has been blinded by the super bright LED emergency lights that fire, police and ambulance vehicles many times. I understand the need to be seen, but when you can't see where you are going it becomes a traffic hazard. It is similar to meeting somebody on a 2 lane road who has their bright lights on. Always amazed me how I could pull a semi on ice with our 1-ton wrecker by tying off and doubling up on the lines. Great job!

I agree with the lights. The bright strobes are so distracting and blinding that they can cause an accident. The “old school” lights work very well.

You are one of the few people who agrees with me that the trucks covered in super bright LED's are more blinding than visible. I have no idea how many times I have had to stop before going around an emergency vehicle because I could not see anything but the lights. I know they want to be safe, but I say turn on as many as you want when its light out, but only use what you need in the dark. I wonder if you could do a video at night and show the difference, or would the camera not show it well enough.

For a guy who say's he's not very good at this, you sure make yourself look bad by making some of this stuff look easy. Nice work and I agree 100 percent on the LED lights. Maybe have a few LEDs so you can see them a bit farther off, but have more that are not as bright so your not blinded when your closer and driving by.

That's really cool. I've never had any experience like that pulling with sever lines and that worked really well. We have an expression that "You can do anything if you have the right tool." I would add "and know how to use it"

So many jokes came to mind watching that truck get pulled out. But it would be really crappy of me to list them all here. :)

I'm interested in the line lock. I run a medium duty boom/wheel lift with a manual transmission here in AZ. Line lock would be very effective!

Just be sure to install some sort of warning light, that comes on when the line-lock is engaged. A flashing light is preferred. When I worked at Weyerhaeuser, our tire truck had a line lock, but no warning light. The tire man went out in the woods to fix a tire, and used the line-lock, but forgot about it being on and drove away with the brakes on. By the time he realized what the problem was, the brake drums were red hot. As he as waiting for the drums to cool, one inside tire blew. A few minutes later, the other inside duel blew. That was sure an expensive fix. All of the rear brake components were toast. We even replaced the wheel bearings. They were probably ok, but the seal had actually melted. We installed a warning light after that. It was easy on that truck because the line lock was electric. I see Casey's is manual, but it would be easy to install a micro switch to turn on the light.

@@evolgenius471 This happed at the Klamath Falls branch and it was summer, so it happened just about 10 miles south of Bly Oregon. The fact that this happened over 50 years ago, and I can remember things like this, but not what I had for lunch yesterday is starting to worry me a bit. LOL

You're not kidding about LED light bars. Had to drive past a cop who had someone pulled over on the way to work this morning, only blue and white lights, super bright LEDs. To the rest of us, driving in the dark with dark adapted eyes, they were like flamethrowers right into your brain. Yeah nobody is going to miss the cop car, but nobody can look towards it to make sure we're not running someone over, either.

That came out way easier than I thought it would. Its crazy how using the ability to slide vehicles with tires locked up is a really big part of recovery tools to get a vehicle repositioned. Definitely have learned a bunch watching your various jobs

Those stupid bright lights that are on most emergency vehicles today are going to get someone killed because at night on the highway, the driver is blind. Glad to hear you say the old school ones are just fine. I agree.

Yes, he said in beginning that it was pumping out tank for park bathrooms which were accessed via that path/drive/walkway.
