147 WAYS TO WRITE A MELODY

The video was getting really long so I omitted a few of the less popular / more nebulous spreadsheet items! Read more about them on my blog: andrewhuang.com/blog/2016/10/1...
This is last week's video where we talked about the logic of melody writing and the parallels to storytelling: • Is writing music logical?
Use the #chordstory hashtag on Twitter to join the discussion, hear more of the submissions, and post your own!
Thanks to Abigail for compiling this playlist of people's submissions!

This is really interesting. When I'm writing a melody it often feels like there's only one obvious solution, but you've shown here that everybody has their own unique solution - and that they're all valid! It's like each person's song is a little package of their own consciousness....

I found so much possibilities in music than architecture as each building design requires justification. Whereas musicain can have the total control over the music. Even the song is bad, at least you can consume the product that you created straight after. Architecture taught me not affraid of creating things and improve on it. Music is probably the same but more freedom on the process of creating.

TMC (Topgame Media Crew) I think it's probably that Picardy 3rd coming in. I feel that it's most commonly used at the end of the theme songs for such shows. If you have a look around you could prove me right/wrong :)
Awesome video Andrew :) Have you ever heard about the Schillinger system? It's basically a set of 'rules' for writing music, a lot of which stem from Maths and numeric sequences. I learnt about it at university, as I was taught by one of the leading acedemics on the subject (Jeremy Arden, he's on the Schillinger system Wikipedia). One of the things I've always taken from it specifically was a certain approach to melody writing regarding phrasing which is pretty much perfectly exampled by the girl at 4:00. Your initial melody follows the rules as far as phrase, followed by a variation on the phrase (similar phrase, overall higher pitch), and then she embellished it with an expansion (I might be a little off the mark with wording, it's been a while since I've explained it, I've just been using it without telling people >.>) which is essentially filling up the bars with a whole bunch of notes that often go higher than the original phrase. Finally she came to a cadence which finished off the melody at a satisfying end. Naturally not all music follows this rule (kudos to Melodica girl, that was some intense re-working), but if you're stuck on a melody I find it so useful to use his teachings. I'd highly recommend the book with foreward by Jeremy Arden if you're interested (The Schillinger System of Musical Composition Vol1&2, though Vol1 is a very useful book in its own right).

the metal one at the end was beautiful
I have no idea about music, music theory, play any musical instruments nor sing. Yet I’m totally hooked! Talk about amazing stuff
There's something strangely beautiful about the communal nature of this video. Awesome to see so many takes on this lovely melodic starter!
Fascinating study, and a particularly fab entry from the jazz melodica at the end. I had a busy week, so didn't record a submission, but for the record my first instinct was to continue with the same three-note stepwise sequence rising from the last note of the supplied melody as you said five other people continued with. So call it six! :) It's just occurred to me that that's because it's "Some Day My Prince Will Come" from Disney's Snow White. Dang. It's so tough not to write in borrowed fragments!!!!

If my eyes are not fooling me, after stalking everyone in the "guests list" I think he's name's Devon Prontack... At least he looks like the guy on the profile photo. Yes, it's a little creepy but the dude really needs an album

This is why I love musicians who love to be creative and emotionally expressive. I am touched by the love.
3:13 that was so beautiful
Wow, you really broke that shit down like a student who had to do a dissertation on song writing. Great job!
Hey Andrew, this is a really cool video, and I just found your channel because of it! I love the idea of this experiment, but I have one nitpick with your theory on the subject of the picardy third. Your description of it is correct, but what you play isn't really a picardy third. I would say it is more of a modulation or a secondary dominant. A picardy third occurs when you are pretty solidly in a minor key, so you really expect the cadence to be on a minor chord. The song starts with a C major chord, and pretty solidly seems to be in C major. Your final chords are even the classic IV->V->I (F to G to C) progression. For it to be a picardy third, it would be in C MINOR and then when you do F->G it would then go to C MAJOR unexpectedly. Instead, you start in a major key, and then finish with an unexpected A major chord. This is the major 6th chord in C major, not what a picardy third would be: a major tonic when a minor is expected. I would say it is more of a secondary dominant to modulate to D major, or a type of deceptive cadence where you expect it to go to the tonic C chord but it goes to the A (VI) chord instead. You are certainly raising the third of the chord from what is in the key (C->C#) and it does sound cool, but I wouldn't call it a picardy third. Just my two cents!

Wait... After one and a half Year since this video was uploaded and randomly popped up on my recommendation video... the person that you put on 00:59 named Melody Nurramdhani Laksani and she's a former member of JKT48, an overseas sister group of Japanese Idol Group, AKB48. And the photo itself captured by one of my closest friend. By the way, Melody now is a General Manager for JKT48. You should check them out too.

The short snatch of melody you played and asked volunteers to continue comes from "Can't get used to losing you" by Andy Williams. However, I am sure you were unaware of that. But what is surprising/shocking is that 147 people didn't think of that musical reference. Probably says a lot about their age, and mine! Check out Williams' song and you'll hear what I mean. Interesting experiment, nevertheless!

elderly like you and i are at a disadvantage in songwriting - every new melody we’ve heard before but youth are burdened with all that knowledge…
This videos shows how great humans are in essence. So much love and compassion put in a melody. Very moving

The examples you showed were so varied but so talented! I feel so honoured to watch this video; its so engaging- like a real class!
For the person playing from 5:08 to 5:44, do you have a video of this song, in it's completion? Also, is this original? (I think it's wonderful, and we need to hear this in its entirety)

it makes me so happy that all these people took inspiration and just did different things with it, experimented and made something cool. everyone made their own style of music and it was just so cool and inspiring
Andrew, I think one of the reasons why a lot of people (myself included) used the E, F, G note pattern is because the melody is very similar to "L'Hymne à l'amour" which also does the E, F, G after the first part of the melody. Go check it out!!
