Explore the debate over lowered recruitment standards in Ontario's police service with insights from retired Staff Sergeant Steve Summerville. This episode tackles the reduction of entry requirements and how it contrasts with the increasing complexity of policing duties. Summerville raises a critical concern: the lack of a mandated physical fitness standard for officers after their initial training, turning physical preparedness into a personal, rather than professional, responsibility.
We discuss the potential risks and long-term effects of these changes on the effectiveness and readiness of law enforcement personnel. As policing challenges grow, the question remains: Is the current approach to recruitment and physical fitness standards sufficient for the demands of modern law enforcement?
Tune in for a critical examination of police recruitment and the importance of maintaining high standards for public safety. Subscribe for more discussions on key issues in law enforcement.

If my partner is in shape and I am not how in gods name will I be able to back my partner in a foot chase or in a fight, if I run out of breath during said fight my partner could die or I could die. Physical fitness is the difference between life and death in a number of jobs, Military, LE, Firefighter to name a few

Wait. The PREP and Beep Test were designed for people in their 40s!?! As someone in his 40s I can tell you I rather run the 1.6km than the damn Beep Test. The stop and go really kills me.

That’s the old school way of measuring your cardio and also very effective.

Physical standard: Unhealthy, overweight cops cannot catch criminals fleeing on foot. I think there should be a gym in the police departments, like most fire departments have.

Agreed. Many police services have gyms that all their members have access to. Sadly there is no requirement to maintain your fitness once hired.

The guy in the news feed saying the process isnt straight forward is wrong....the process IS straight forward the problem lies with the way police advertise there openings and promotion of the process. Reducing the physical would be a problem overall. There are many different situations out there and if u cannot control them then you are just making it worse
