143. Narrowboat cruise from Stoke Bruerne to (near) Cosgrove

#narrowboat #narrowboats #canal #canals #liveaboard #cruisingthecut
My autumn jaunt along the Grand Union canal continues as I take the boat from Stoke Bruerne (where I can't get a decent 4G mobile signal) towards Cosgrove but I end up mooring in the lovely countryside. En route there's an awful lot of pretty countryside to stare at.

Hi David, you said in this lovely video that the words ' onward and upward ' seemed to have been your educational expectation but that you failed to do so. From what I can gather from the small amount of information we have been able to glean on you that you had a successful career. I don't like to hear you putting yourself down. I have no way of knowing what your ambitions were as a teen and whether you were able to get close to achieving them or whether, like so many of us, we were turned from those dreams through life or choices made. BUT, please believe me when I say that God has given you a tremendous gift for sharing. I have no interest in other canal KZread because your presentation is soothing, easy to listen to and interesting to all. Me, for history and beautiful scenery and hubby, the actual mechanics of the boat, the maintenance as well as the scenery. We love the bridges, many of which would not be seen from the road, were we able to come to England and do a driving tour. You have done such a service to your country. Just look how popular you area in countries all over the world. So, in conclusion, you may or may not have fulfilled your youthful dreams, but your choice to live on a narrowboat and cruise the cut has brought much pleasure to many people. Once again, God bless, David

@@CruisingTheCut Did I hear you say that you had worked in radio? Your voice and sense of humour would have been most suitable. You also mentioned that you were not a socialable person. A lot of us who are of the same nature find ourselves like you. Taking on the work that plunges us into having to face people day in and day out. I spent 35 years working in the Australian public service in the health care and welfare sectors. You became a journalist. Home becomes our haven. I think you feel that about your canal boat. That is were I think your serenity comes from. You still play and exhibit a wonderful sense of humour. Denis and I were watching something over the weekend, and he commented that they weren't like 'David's canals '. I had a small grin to myself. I told you we had adopted you.

The UK's canals are a treasure. building a new canal system in a hypothetical new country for pleasure boats to use today would be mindbogglingly expensive and it would probably run into all kinds of political brick walls. Having the use of an old system is most fortunate.

  • @Innerspace100

    @Innerspace100

    5 жыл бұрын

Not to mention all the nice historic buildings/environments on several places along the system. Like Braunston Junction, for example. Or some of the lock keeper cottages. It just oozes history and atmosphere. You'd hardly get any of that, would you, if you'd set about to build a canal system from scratch now... The British are indeed lucky(!).

sorry but i have to beg to differ with you. your comment about onward and upward----you did not fail, you are keeping that alive. from what i have seen, you had a successful career on t.v. and now you are living on a canal boat, doing blogs about that, and doing other blogs about vans, and you do a lot of other things as well. to be able to do what you are doing takes a lot more than a lot of other people would even try to do. so yes, you are going onward and upward---well maybe not when you were coming down in the lock, but what the hey!!!

With reference to the overgrown state of some sections of canal the Canal and River Trust have many teams of volunteers who keep both the towpaths and offside vegetation under control. The teams are out between September and March and volunteering with these teams is great way to be part of the canal community. The volunteers of course have their own Facebook page. facebook.com/groups/274612743686/ It would make a great vlog watching some of these teams at work.

You could legitimately tell your old headmaster that you DO go onward and upward. You can just leave out the bit about sometimes going downward if the locks are descending. Funny how you remember stuff lie that; at the end of secondary school, my headmaster wrote that 'This girl will no doubt spend several years at a state institution - whether that turns out to be a university or a prison remains to be seen'.

Fabulous place to stop. We have similar, 'stay away from towns' mentality. What I like about your canal travels is that it shows that you can stop in these wonderful places, and simply 'pitch tent' for the night. Now imagine if you try that in a literal sense. You'd be given the short shift by the local landowner for sure. Canals seem to be open and free for all to enjoy.

Lovely place to moor in your own private piece of British countryside. It is quite amazing the difference your clean cratch cover, blacking, chimney and rear mooring ???, the name escapes me, has made to the boat looks of your boat.

Another good v'log. Hope you find a good 4G point soon, after all that's how you pay the piper and get your mail. I agree the canal banks could use a trim. But the growth does give a home to the birds and flowering ivy and have a natural beauty of their own. No stinging bees/wasp/hornets allowed though. As for stopping at a random spot, you are a vacation/holiday and the best VK's are always the ones when you can stop and smell the flowers along the way.

It seems to me here is about the time you slowed down to a relaxed pace and finally shrugged off the rush rush of city dwelling mentality. BTW I am viewing from your oldest vids to newest. Yup binging while on lockdown.

Here's a vlog idea which you may already have covered: I noticed your black bumper and wondered how they get made, which took me to the concept of all the ropes and so on that you can find at a chandlers, where all the stuff comes from and who works on it.

I have come to the sad realization that even if I could immigrate to the UK, find a nice boat, etc., etc. that I would still have to find someone to keep me company and more importantly, run the locks for me. I think after the first two or three locks I'd be laying passed out on my back after I had traversed the lock. Oh well, at least I get to watch you run them. I love your videos!

Come on a tourist visit and hire a boat. There are several canals with no locks. My family and I did Bradford on Avon to Bath on the K&A, no locks after Bradfords town lock, which has volunteer keepers, then just a few swing bridges. There’s several other lock free runs, check out a few guides on the web. You are never alone on the canals, people chat all the time, benefit of travelling slow!

As an irregular narrowboat hirer (once every few years), and therefore completely different from someone living aboard and cruising all the time, I have to say that working the locks is one of the most fun parts of cruising, as well as a way of getting a little bit more fit in a most enjoyable way. Of course, it's best if you work as a team, two on one lock, two running ahead to get the next one ready, one driving the boat, and a sixth in the galley making the next meal - or, at least, a cup of tea! OK, at my age, "running ahead" might be a bit of an exaggeration, but the leisurely speed of canal cruising means that "briskly walking" is quite adequate! As FDS FPV says, come and give it a try with a hire boat: I certainly intend to do it again while I am still able.
