I have found the best way to do valve clearance mesurments is start with piston coming up on exhaust stroke. Turn adjusters down 5 turns past 0 lash. Roll engine by hand slowly in direction of rotation until you make contact. Keep backing off adjuster until you can roll the engine thru. Place dial indicator on retainer and loosen adjuster until lash this is your minimum valve clearance. Back engine up 90deg from TDC and tighten intake adjuster 5 turns past 0 lash. Repeat procedure to determine intake clearance. This gives you the actual clearances. You could actually be closer than you think based on the cam profiles by using the method you showed. I have cams that open the valve fast enough to actually catch the piston on the down stroke at 15 deg after tdc.

  • @horsetorquesdiesel

Spinning over the entire engine ensures proper clearance no matter where the cam profile is.

Block gitting bored this week so I've just been a flly on the wall... info has been very well presented and absorbed. I love learning by osmosis dosen't help wit confidence enough but thats not your job and only gained through hands on experience... Oil cooler note . Cummins had a 9 plate in the 6bt for industrial applications and road use till they found problems from over cooling oil preventing volitals( condensate from blow-by) from evaporation and gumming up the works. That is when they made the change to 7 plate for 6bt and 4 plate for 4bts. Found this info sitting in Scipio Utah waiting for my parts to arrive, as I had split an oil cooler plate loosing 2.5ga oil to coolent from Salt Lake to Scipio, and was looking to see if there was an upgrade option .
