14 Things to do in Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis, Tennessee is the second largest city in the state and is home to great museums, restaurants and loads of history. I spent a week in the city and really enjoyed learning more about it and exploring some of the tops spots like Graceland, the National Civil Rights Museum and the Peabody Hotel. Here are some of the best things to do in Memphis. Let me know what I left off in the comments.

Even though Memphis is famous, many Americans have never visited because it’s geographically so far from the East and West coast. To get their you would normally have to travel by airplane. …..Another reason why many Americans have never visited is because there’s not much in the surrounding areas. It’s mostly rural areas

this is the BEST video I've ever seen or could imagine for Memphis. I lived there during its PEAK (1991 - 1993) and absolutely loved it. When I went back and visited last year, my heart was broken to see the ghetto dump it is now. Thank you for this wonderful video. It is everything that is great and could've helped make the city into the capital of the south. It brought back such nice memories.

The Memphis Botanic Gardens is pretty and in summer has music. There’s free shows at the Levitt Shell sometimes. The Brooks Art Museum and the metal museum are interesting as well as the Pink Palace and children’s museum (last 2 especially if you have kids)… Then there’s the Cooper Young area with a cool vibe and restaurants that sometimes have music and Overton Square which has restaurants and the railgarten. There of course is the Orpheum for broadway shows and performances. People in Memphis tend to like food and live music. :) Also for an unique experience Elmwood Cemetery is pretty cool if you like history.

@Michael A Memphis is not a crap hole, if you choose to be like this you can find something bad about every city, Memphis isn’t perfect sure, with the crime, some events that happened, and the amount of homeless people/ beggars. But we have great food, events, and your experience can vary based on where you go, most of the touristy stuff is in downtown, but a bunch of the things locals do aren’t in downtown

Having lived in Memphis for a significant part of my life, just want to say you covered it well and in a positive light. Might have been a bit too kind to Mud Island as it tends to be a huge let down to most and usually poorly maintained. But everything else you hit right on. The only other place I would have included is the Pink Palace Museum which is the former mansion of the guy who started Piggly Wiggly. Great job - especially on the zoo!

I was useless the rest of the day… I don’t see how half a day is even enough it’s a big museum and it’s so well done!!! I’m a huge Elvis fan and always go to memphis for Graceland and Elvis events but I’m so glad I went to the civil rights museum. It’s amazingly well done. Also sun studios is a very fun tour. Hey there, born and raised in Memphis, your last destination, the crystal shrine grotto has SO MANY MORE secrets and features that I bet not nearly anyone knows about, my father has worked at memorial park for many years and he grew up in Memphis. For starters, the fountain outside the grotto has faces built into the base that you can spot looking from the ancient log crypt. Next to that crypt to the top left of the concrete, is a depiction of jesus laying down (like him in the tomb I assume) that’s built straight into the rock! Sort of hidden unless you stand on top of the tomb. Also the tree that was man made from the same special material created for the entire grotto. The grottos granite and quarts was made from materials sourced from Arkansas and the composite used to make the entire thing is still a trade secret to this day. Also if you noticed as you exited the grotto to the left there seemed to have been a pedestal for something, and being that Memphis is Memphis, someone stole the giants quartz I believe. Note: I will re-edit this comment after conferring with my father who is probably the only man that works at memorial park who knows anything about all of this.

I can't believe you didn't mention the Pink Palace (they're calling it the "Memphis Museum of Science and History", but we all know it's The Pink Palace), the Botanical Garden, The Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic art in the downtown area, (a small, affordable and filled to the brim with beautiful Asian artifacts); there's also The Broom Closet and Lucyja Hygge, if you're into the metaphysical (or just like beautiful crystals and a good vibes). There's an Asian store, too, called Viet Hoa Market, where you can get Asian exports, and a car museum called Edge Motor Museum (I've never been but it has good reviews).

Memphis is a fascinating city with interesting spots with very interesting history but at the same time, you may be disappointed. The city has severely declined so it’s not for everyone.

@@bwmwm Memphis is a ghost town. Take a drive on a weekday and walk the streets. There is no hustle and bustle. So many empty sidewalks all over the city. Beale street area is almost empty on a weeknight . ….Also according to Wikipedia the population is declining

Don't visit Memphis. There's a high chance that your car will be stolen or you will be robbed... The crime is horrible. I'm trying to move to another city.

lol every city has crime just stay away. I’m not from Tennessee I’m from Mississippi but I moved to Memphis been here for the last 30 years. Never been carjacked, robbed,in a fight, not even an argument, and I go to a lot of bars downtown. Theirs no place else I’ll rather be. And I’ve been to a lot of cities.
