Great setup, JT. It's a good design if you can take it apart after 3 years, modify it, and put it back together without real damage to the boat. I have an old v-hull i did this to and this is a great reminder that I need to make some changes to make it user friendly. No need to keep tripping over chords, like you said!

I'm loving the setup, especially the removable deck. Have you thought about using swimming pool noodles or pipe wrap underneath rather than the rubber? Nice work! Impressive!

Yes I have, and thank you KB! The issue I have with pool noodles is that they deteriorate after a little while. They would not hold up as long. Same with pipe wrap. I would think pipe wrap would last longer than the noodle, but I know 100% that the rubber I use will not disintegrate or disappear on me after a few years. It was also a recycled bike intertube and would also be easy enough to mount (glue) in place

Another great video my friend. Although, you know that I will chime in, lol. I personally would get that battery off of the 2x4's. Make a suspension of some kind from your deck to hold the battery. Over time (I've experienced in the past) the rivets will start to stretch from the weight bouncing up and down from the battery, eventually causing a leak. Suspending it from the deck will eliminate that. Awesome video bro, keep them coming

Great idea! I will definitely have to plan that one out and think of how to do that. It makes sense, and its also at the bow right on that curve where most waves and chop hit.

@@MirrorMirrorImage I have not done this yet. Its on the list. I have to rebuild the transom on the boat so I will also do this while that project is going. I want to flip the deck over and get the battery hanger set on it while also adding some storage net underneath of the deck for life jackets or tackle. PVC board seems like it would be great. I look forward to hearing how it goes!

Great idea/design/implementation. I have that same boat and am considering this design but I’ll use a 9.9 or 15HP outboard on mine. Have ever considered having the top of the deck sprayed with a Line-X coating like they spray truck beds with ?

Thank you! You could spray that on the deck if you wanted too. I know some people have done it to the inside of their boat. I used Raptor Liner on my truck bed and it has lasted about 8 years now. It was inexpensive and has been great. I'm sure it would be good for the deck if you wanted to use it. The paint has been fine for me. The whole purpose to me is to seal the wood so it doesn't rot. Just use a litter color so it doesn't heat up as much. Darker color do last longer in the sun though... so maybe a grey would be best if you did that.

I would like too, but I have to get on the American longtails first. I have a Backwater kit waiting to be assembled. Once I get the longtails all tested and assembled then I'll move onto surface drives

Thank you! I think a 9.8 outboard would push this 1436 jon boat. Theres a few good forums you can check and you could also check craigslist postings and see what people are getting on their boat/motor setup for speed

Hey man I love the design of your deck. It looks great. Did you use treated wood? Thinking I’ll paint the wood on my deck with exterior paint but trying to decide whether to use treated wood. I’ve heard the treated wood can eat away at aluminum

Thank you @Heavener production, I heard that too about treated wood. I just used standard wood because it was lighter and cheaper and I knew I could seal it. I just used regular exterior paint and its been great. I also knew that the deck would not constantly be in water either. If it were constantly in water like the floor, then maybe I would worry about it, but its up off the floor, water drains off of it, and water doesn't get the chance to really soak in.

Nice setup. Would you rather have a 1240 Lowe or a 1436 tracker/lowe?

The motor would decide for me. I like my longtail mud motor, so I would choose the 1436 and I would not do an alumacraft again so either the tracker or lowe (a longtail runs better on skinnier hulls), and a boat that is longer and skinner will carry the same load faster than a shorter and wider boat. Also, the 1436 will have a higher HP rating so you would be able to put a bigger motor on it. But if you need a boat to slide into your pick up bed, the 1240 would be better. At first, when I got this 1436 boat, I loaded it in my truck bed. After doing it once or twice, I was done doing that haha 12' a lot easier to slide into a pick up bed for some reason.

Yeah, both are good, just depends on your needs. If you just want to fish both will work. I've never noticed the difference in a 36" wide compared to a 42" wide when it comes to stability so I wouldn't rely on that for picking one over the other.

Does the 13hp get her done? I have the same boat and looking to modify it and get a Backwater motor. Do you know anything about those?

13hp is a perfect engine size for this boat. The engine weight is just right, and the mud motor I have is the swamp runner and I've gotten it to 23mph which is plenty fast for me. The 6.5hp engine was supper light and got me 12mph but I didn't test that engine much before I got the 13hp engine

What paint did you use on the deck to protect it?

An exterior paint. It was just an outdoor deck paint. I don't know the exact type but it didn't have a strong smell to it or anything. Nothing too potent. I just put multiple coats on it and was easy to clean up.

Great day on the water today, could have filled the boat with Reds.

So far I get 23mph with a 13hp longtail by myself and 18 mph with a 220lb friend in the boat. Compared to others, it's a pretty reasonably weight for a casting deck
