It’s been a game changer!
A small flashlight, umbrella of course (placing both in easy-to-retreive-location). Scissors, nails clipper. Never tried an eSim before. I guess it depends where you land first, like a small town where there's no mobile shop, or arriving at destination airport when shops are closed.

For the Airalo e-sims, can you still use messaging apps like Line, Snapchat, Messenger before connecting to local WiFi?

You sure can! Only things you can't do is make cellular calls and texts. But you can work around that by using an app like Whatsapp or any of the ones you mentioned. If you have an iphone, Imessage will work as well :)
