As far as I know, If you pick the lock clockwise, as LPL did in this video, then the pins will bind before the sidebar. If you pick anticlockwise, the sidebar will bind first, and you will need to rotate the pins before lifting them to the shear line.

Try removing most of the pins stacks until only one is left. Pick that. Then add another pin stack. then another. Once you get three pin stacks, switch around which key position stacks you are picking. Do 1,2,3 positions, the closest to the shoulder of the key. Then try something like 1,4,5 where you have to reach in there. I taught somebody by giving him a few of the same lock and did this for him. With most medeco locks, the top of the each pin stack is secured by a set screw, so this makes them very easy to play with. If you can pick a 2 pin lock, you can eventually pick a 6 pin lock it just takes longer and more patience. Do not frustrate yourself. Baby steps, baby steps.

Very thankful for your video on this lock, I just finished a retired ATM kiosk uninstall in Joliet Illinois and sure enough the door had its original 5 pin medeco still with a key (from 1997ish) and immediately thought of you lol and saved everything before taking it to scrap. Fun fact all the bank & ATM contractors know these as "the one you have to turn backwards" to unlock the deadbolt... Many many calls were made because it lol, you can imagine the unamused voice on the other end of the line once they were told this.

Another fun fact about some ATMs, at least in bank settings, is that if you make a mistake in opening the combination lock that contained the safe in the ATM it would send a silent alarm. There were also drill grids that if hit would send an alarm. These were units made in the mid to late 90s. Might be cheaper now but back then the security for them was impressive.

That was extremely fast for a Medeco ,lock these keys are made to 1/100of and iso if we measure in mm. Is very precise and accurate the square Medaco is up there for me ,and I rate it very high ! Very fast opening that cylinder ! Wow

+pavle vlastimirovic Thanks. Like I said in the video, even I was a little surprised that it opened so fast for me. I had opened this lock a few limes before, and it usually took another couple minutes. Usually its the opposite (the camera adds a minute or two). That said, I'll take some luck every now and then.

Seems like a pretty decent lock design. I guess having the rotation also to worry about means it's sort of equivalent to having twice as many normal pins? While it doesn't stop you from being able to pick it (even without unusual tools), it does make it take longer and probably require more skill to handle the rotation?

One thought I had was, why isn't the first pin an anti-drill pin, further shielding the pins behind it. But the anti-drill pins are a little on the short side, which means they need to be pushed up a little higher to reach the shear line. It's probably better to have the first one set a little farther down, to help against raking probably.

I thought those medeco locks could not be picked... it would be nice see you build a key for it !

Wow, absolutely impressive. I've question for you, how do distinguish between true an false gates when you rotate the pins? Cheers Viktor

+vde Thanks. Pins in false gates are bound up. They have no movement (either rotationally, or up and down). Pins in the true gates more freely up and down, and have a little rotational play.

+John Svazic Thanks. THe pins have a chisel-shaped tip. It's just a matter of using a pick that can catch apply precise force, and catching the edge of the pin. Over time, you will feel the difference between rotation and slipping. Good luck.

Very impressive! I have a medeco myself and will soon try it by myself. Do you think that a new one is much harder to pick, because of tighter tolerances?

Quick question... Is is overkill to have three extra stacks drilled and ss inserts for drill protection? If you already have two pins that are ss? Just make the sidebar with the first 16th of an inch ss and then no need for the inserts at all. They can put the $ saved into better security pins for it (Anti Picking features) insted? Just a thought. Made this Medeco look easy and they just kick my butt. lol Cheer

It's never over kill IMO. Remember that locks are all about buying time. The better the lock, the more time. The more anti drill pins, the more time it takes to drill.

Maybe since you've opened it before the pins were sorta oriented correctly? This is really impressive. Do you have a tutorial on how they should feel, and how to rotate them?

In one of your videos you talk about how important it is to never pick the same lock twice in a row. Here you say you have about a half dozen opens on the medeco before you shot video. What did you use as filler between medeco picks? Or is the never twice in a row just a beginner rule to keep from developing false confidence

After you pick the driver pins to sheer, do all the pins feel loose? I would imagine that the key pins not being rotated correctly would be cause for them to still feel stiff but maybe i have a misunderstanding.

They only feel loose if they are at the right angle. :-)

Thanks. Good question. If you look very carefully during the gutting, you can see a tiny nub sticking out from the top/back of the key pins. This interfaces with a slot in the core and limits the range of rotation.

Are Medeco Maxxum M3 good enough to stop the average burglar? I heard these can be bumped like the 20 dollar home depot locks. if thats the case why buy the M3? no one installs or stocks the high end abloy protect2. I just want to stop the average guy with a bump key or basic picker.

Interesting. So you pick all the pins to the shear line first and then address the sidebar? I've picked one medeco where I would lift and rotate at the same time and it took me at least 15 min to pick a 6 pin. I didn't realize you could do it this way which def seems easier

I'm by no means an expert on Medecos, so don't put too much stock in my methods... I just played with this one for an afternoon then made the video. I've never put the time in the really learn these locks well.

I'm probably too late to get an answer, but what is the 6th hole in the cylinder plug for? There were five holes for the lock pins and the 6th hole was further back.

we have these at the carwash on our machines, but ours have 2 of the sidebars

So I think a Medico lock with wafers should be the hardest thing to pick am I right or is there any other tricks to make a lock pick proof?

But how do you know the pins are set if plug doesn't spin? Pins don't move. Rotating the pins into place automatically engages the sidebar or you must address after rotation? Plus after rotating they spring and bounce again as if not set? Hmm I see but confused.

I just did a search of Medco Locks on eBay. I won't be getting one soon. Those prices are high. Nice picking on a lock that is "unpickable".

Did you forget to remove the face plate cover and show that its a kwikset? Cause at this speed that cant be a Medeco, just kidding, get work buddy. Was wondering when your hands will get to Medeco. Kudos!!!

+Papa Gleb LOL. Thanks buddy. I was a little surprised myself... I opened both of those 5-pin Medeco rim cylinders pretty quickly. Once I got the hang of them, I probably averaged about 4 min. per lock (the video, as I mention, was an anomaly). Either these particular locks were pretty easy, or there is a big difference between 5 and 6 pin Medeco locks. In any case, I feel like I'm making some progress on them... getting them open (eventually) was never the problem, but I'm finally getting to the point where I can open them in a controlled, and deliberate way. That's exciting for me.

and this is why it took 45 minutes and three bits every time we had to drill one out to replace it after someone tried to break into it and damaged the keyway.

well done! I never seen that type of lock just heard about rotating the pins, that's got to be difficult picking even though you made it look easy ..

Even though I've only picked 1 and a half Medecos(1 six pin and one with only 3 pins),I must admit,when it comes to picking the pins rotationally,I don't get any real feedback from individual pins(I.e whether they rare binding or loose)and just rake them

I am not very good with Medeco locks (yet), but FWIW, I feel for binding, not for movement... movement is hard to feel. Solid binding is easier to detect. Good luck.

This is not a "high security" lock with pins that rotate into slots. They say a Medeco high security keyway can not be picked in under 3 hours. Is this true?

Slanted teeth are cut to align the chisel points of the bottom pins which determine the location of the sidebar slots in the key. Look down at the key from the top and you will see there are straight across cuts, left angles cuts and right angle cuts.

How to pick a Medeco Rim Cylinder: Step 1: Take cylinder out of the door and put it in a bench vice on your work bench. I like your content, and exploring the engineering of these lock, both the good engineering and the bad engineering. But the bottom line is this--no lock is completely free from being compromised, and picking a lock in a real world situation is a lot different than picking a lock under ideal conditions for helping the picker.

Its a challenge, and its a secret i shared with 67 year old locksmith who told me to keep it and make a video and send it to medeco, in return you ask for non-disclosure agreements and get your money for mouth shut. It’s strange what i am telling you guys but i promise you, there is a way, and its quick

I do want to point out this is a cheap copy of a medco. with no depth pin and some very odd cuts on the angles. Medco locks have a depth groove also, and this does not have one.... So No... You did not pick a Medco.
