13. Using Scrap Glass in MicrowaveKiln or Normal Kiln to Create Fused Glass Dichroic Pendants

Follow my video to see how I made these WOW dichroic glass fused pendants using either a microwave kiln and/or ordinary kiln out of scrap pieces of glass. Watch as I break glass, combine the pieces, cut out and fuse. Its so easy to do. All the pendants I have made to date in these videos are now for sale on my website.
Firing schedule for Fire Polish that I use. This may vary depending on your kiln. I also use this schedule for tack fuse which gives a light tack fuse.
270 C (518 F) to 535 C (995 F) Hold 20 mins
650 C (1202 F) to 726 C (1339 F) Hold 10 mins
Full to 515 C (959 F) Hold 60 mins
200 C (392 F) to 150 C (302 F) Hold 0 mins

    Hi Ilene. I have had it a long time and it has worn off but I think its 700 watt. Just to say the size of your microwave kiln will also affect the timings. I had a smaller one originally and the fusing was much faster in that. Hope this helps.

    Hi Cath. Thanks for your comment. Because the metal is encased in the mwk it is safe. The only reason you cant put metal in a microwave oven normally is because the microwaves bounce off the metal back into the microwave oven itself which is dangerous. In a mwk the mwk absorbs the microwaves to create the heat, they do not pass through the mwk, so do not reach the metal. Hope this helps :)

    I had some luck with heating up a pendant to get the bail off. I put it in the oven at 275 degrees farenheit for 25 minutes.

    Hello Gunner. I dont remember where I got it from it was a long time ago, sorry but it is called MagicFuse. I used to have one of the small fuseworks ones and I used to get a lot of breakages. I find the magicfuse one is more controllable with less shocking to the glass. :)

    Can you fire any kind of glass or only fuse glass, bc I have tons of stain glass

  • @ArtsandCraftsTI

    @ArtsandCraftsTI

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Mellisa. I dont see why not, provided all the glass is the same coe. I dont use stained glass personally, maybe someone can comment further.

  • @GunnerHillTX

    Unless you know what your glass is, you would have to experiment to see if each piece is compatible with each other piece. The most common coes are 90 coe and 96 coe and they don't play well together. Bullseye, for example, sells 90 coe glass. Spectrum (now Oceanside) is normally 96 coe.

    Have you ever used a casting mold in the microwave?

  • @ArtsandCraftsTI

    @ArtsandCraftsTI

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Lyn. I used one once and it broke. However, I know it is possible to use one because many people do. I would just advise to heat gently to start off with, maybe at 30% or 40% or 50% heat for a few minutes, and gradually increase. The alternative is stainless steel cookie cutters which you can use in the mwk. :)

  • @ArtsandCraftsTI

    Hi Shane. When you have rough edges on a piece (after grinding for example), a fire polish literally polishes the piece to make it smooth again without changing the shape of the piece. Hope that helps :)
