13 Things Only Highly Sensitive People Understand

There are certain problems only highly sensitive people will understand. Due to a biological difference, life as a highly sensitive person or HSP can sometimes be challenging. HSP’s are more inclined than other people to process information on a deep level. All their senses are heightened and felt more deeply - which means they can become overloaded much quicker as well. HSPs often suffer from frequent emotional exhaustion.
Being emotionally sensitive has advantages, too, of course. Highly sensitive people are usually very self-aware and more perceptive and empathetic than most. They are passionate and creative, with a deep appreciation for all things beautiful.

Here is something I seldom see mentioned in videos about HSPs: We have to dumb ourselves down to have any kind of conversation with many people. All of the wonderful things our curious, open and creative minds explore has to be kept secret or else we'll be labeled woo-woo. It sounds arrogant but sometimes I feel like a 3D person in a 2D world.

Yes! I feel the same way! We are not arrogant. It's just a waste of energy trying to have a surface conversation with shallow people. And boring too. I have so many different interests and curious about everything. I thrive on learning about things and gaining knowledge. But I have no one to talk to at this level because so many people are shallow. Its hard to be like this and sometimes I wish I was like everyone else because I think it would be easier to navigate in the world. I wish I could find a friend like me to talk to.

Or you could live without emotions and actually repair the extreme nervous system damage and actually be able to function in public and in private without being on constant freak-out mode. Sounds pretty nice right? As an OPEHSP (Over-poweredExtremelyHSP)(thanks molly) I can attest to the value of this information. Oh, but don’t judge, you’re an addict too, you just hooked on your own brains fight or flight and happiness chems and have found a way to “push the button” even when there’s nothing happening. At least I outsource my supply. Anywho. Nobody sticks up for addicts because everyone’s hooked on something, they just are ashamed of it... at least users are intellectually honest about it instead of hiding it behind menagerie and facades. We’re the real hero’s, being real about what’s inside. But yeah, keep on hiding from the truth and drag me through the mud for making you look at reality. Cause THAT’s brave...

I am happy when I'm alone too and my family does not understand it. I felt hurt by many people because my anti social behaviour was seen as rude. And people often made bad comments about me. As a result I don't want to be near people. I do get hostile when I am around people that have hurt me in the past. I never address people when they hurt me, I approach them years later. But I don't like it when others are hostile. Maybe those hostile people that you find hard to handle are highly sensitive too. Hope you have a great day. I know that being highly sensitive can be hard to deal with.

As an HSP, I'm usually very sensitive to my environment like I'd have a deep connection with everything. Thus I notice the beauty, unity, and integrity of the world surrounding me in each moment: raindrops, snowflakes, the sunset, the squirrel on the tree, the little bird singing in the garden, the smile of a child etc. and I see the unspoken meaning behind them, intuitively. For me this is the base of inspiration for writing, and since I've finally found the strength in myself to be able to live with it (including its downsides as well) I now consider it a blessing...

I totally relate. Writing and going into nature, gardening, all have been conduits for my ability to resolve the harshness of this world and my ability to find peace in the midst of chaos, beauty in the midst of ugly hate, and clarity in times of confusion. I can walk into nature and let streams, trees, even rocks give me short, yet profound messages that soothe my soul. I am truly blessed to see and hear through nature the underlying soul of the divine when I listen, see, and feel deeply within myself.

I totally agree with you... yet speaking for myself, letting them go is part of loving them as attachment leads to suffering... when love is given freely by both sides, then you got a lifelong sustainable love... which is why letting them go, if they got things to do for instance, is a crutial part of loving them and trusting them, which is also why finding love for a HSP like me might appear to be so hard for most people and me if I give too much importance to what other people think, yet as I trust myself it doesn't take long to realise that it is so worthy in the end. That I am convinced of as I write those lines... Thank you for your comment which allowed me to express this out! ☼PeacE☼ ♥LovE♥ (:HumouR:) AnD ♫CnahgE♫ Sent your waY T-GuY

I have now recognized it as who I am and have learned how to control getting my feelings hurt. I would never change who I am, in fact I actually feel good about me. My love and compassion for all living things brings me great happiness. I really wish others were more sensitive.

I absolutely hate being an HSP. I take on everyone's emotions. I care too deeply and people comment on how understanding and compassionate i am yet no one really understands me. No one understands why I feel intense emotions and why I feel physical pain in my body when I see an injury on someone else. A lone wolf is what I am. I'm everyone's friend yet I feel friendless. Strangers come to me and tell me their problems. Talking to people emotionally exhausts me. I just got off the phone with someone ... whose vibes and tone of voice alone made me choke up with tears. Feeling his sadness broke me down into tears. I always have to remind myself that these aren't my emotions. I like being alone. In total quiet. In solitude. No one understands why I value my alone time. Why i can't be around people all the time. So exhausting.. I need my alone time because only then I can recharge my batteries. Spending the whole day not interacting with anyone is soothing to my soul. I wish i didn't feel things so deeply. I can't save everyone and yet I keep trying to take everyone under my wing. I keep trying because its the only thing I know how... i cannot not help someone ...even though I burn myself out. Like a moth to a flame.

Bitcoin bulls are optimistic again and for good reason we have seen the price trading around $7,000 support level strongly, nevertheless, Bitcoin might rally further if it continues this way and it's possible we see $75000 resistance region. Most buyers and sellers are eagerly waiting to see the next upside and new resistance level. But while others wait ,as a trader I would say it's still a very good time to buy and trade. The motivation for me was meeting Charles Michael,a pro trader in all aspect who provides signals for me on a daily basis and with which I realised 3.445btc in profit from a volume of just 1.6621btc in less than one month of meeting him and my experience has been on a steady increase over the course of meeting him.

Sensitive people are generally more emotionally intelligent as they have a higher level of consciousness about their own feelings and emotions as well as an empathy about the feelings and emotions of others. Some people call this 'people pleasing' and it can be an accurate description, however for those with a vision, a goal, or a greater purpose for their life to be the best they can be then they can easily steer themselves away from people pleasing to achievements oriented for themselves as they have a greater purpose that guides them in a different direction. I feel i am one of them. Good luck everyone :-)

In an esoteric context, it is also helpful/quite useful, to use your 'third eye' to perceive and even protect yourself from being over-stimulated by all the things you can feel. Only then can you trust yourself to also set personal parameters and learn when you must also say ' No' for self-preservation. Help, care, empathize, feel, but also ground yourself.

@@jgoldberg3647 That is another great way to look at it.With experience and a great purpose to pull you through the challenges of life we can develop that '3rd eye.' My focus on life is to achieve my daily, weekly, yearly goals etc and to do it with the least obstruction in that pathway of success, so if it means i have to 'please' people on the way or not to respond negatively to someone on the road cutting you up etc then the greater purpose of achieving my goals pulls me through any situation as i can understand why 'others' behave the way they do and i show empathy by reacting as positively as i can. I agree we sometimes have to say 'no' to protect ourselves and the skill is knowing when. Good luck and thanks for your reply :-)

I think you covered everything. Good job! How do you know me so well? My dad is an extrovert who loves to entertain at his house and be the center of attention. He would always chastise me for being too sensitive and antisocial because I hated that our house was the hangout for everybody and I would hide in the garage or go to the park to be alone. For years I thought there was something wrong with me because I'm so different from most guys. I cry over sad movies, etc. or when somebody else cries, I love art, opera, museums, the library and anything of beauty and I notice and obsess over things others seem oblivious to. Also, because I'm black and male, I was/am expected to like rap and sports, both of which I hate! One day I was lamenting to my friend about how I couldn't connect with other guys because I'm so different and I hated myself for it and she told me that my sensitivity was my super power and the reason she liked me so much was because of all the things that my father despised in me. She was a woman I had great respect and admiration for and hearing her describe my quirks and oddities as a unique almost divine power that allowed me to understand appreciate things that others don't gave me a new perspective. So to all my fellow HSPs, let's use our powers for good!

These " qualities " are a great blessing and a curse at the same time. I still can't shake off my father's death over 17 years ago. I seem to hang unto things and feelings waaayy past their point of usefulness. We weep but we must live on. Correct me if I am wrong, if those of you that fit this HSP personality: 1) Your parents was/were great caring people. They give/ gave you a solid foundation on how you should love and love other people. 2) You rely/relied on their strength/ weaknesses in most facets of your life when growing up. 3) Everything you know/ knew and believe in life involve/ involved heavily dependent on what they say or do. 4) As a HSP person, we value friendship and fellowship with others and often get betrayed and hurt in life's journey. Most HSP's actually have a high pain tolerance. They are designed to feel other's pains and exhaustions, so they can handle much more and intense pain than most people. If they have a low pain tolerance, it is not their's. They have to acknowledge where that feeling is coming from, then they will be back to their normal. Overanalyzing the details I can relate to... Clue #1 - if you hate your job or are exhausted after a days work, this career is working against you and you need to change careers. As far as a professional to help us learn about being an HSP, I have found none in America because they all are with the mindset of how to cope rather than explaining how you are, your tendencies and struggles, and what to do with your sensitivities. You wouldn't use a Honda to tow a semi trailer, you would find a truck designed to do it. Same with people; learn about your design so you can best use your gifts and talents. I automatically said No Thanks, Sorry!, Later again in Superstore, he seeks me out and said to me " Please have a Japanese Tea Ceremony with me!" so we sat down at the table in Superstore and they were good enough to give us each a cup of Hot water, and then he put the powder Matcha in our cups and stirring well, then he said just a second, before we drink, I have to chant Buddha's name 10 time's, after , he said was that 10? I do the same thing now because I go into a trance when I chant Buddha's name!, especially when I am drinking Japanese Matcha Tea!, I found Buddhism has got me out of my shell, it really feels a lot better now, even on the bus I try striking up conversations, which doesn't always work out, because it seems like a good many peoples have Hsp........ but you need help!, I had been talking to a Psychiatrist for Year's for my emotional problems, but mostly the only answer they have are handfuls and handfuls of pill's which really ruined me, Albert Einstein said that the only religion that is feasible to save mankind!, is Buddhism, it has made me very happy!, or maybe I just found a incredible person to take time out to share his thoughts!, I must also add!, it just may be who is representing the religion, because, I was was on the bus and was excited to see a Buddhist priest who wouldn't talk to me on the Bus, he didn't even smile!, so what I recommend is just get books on Buddhism first, don't go to a Temple until you feel like you are ready

You really cannot change being a HSP. only shape it in a way that is healthy and mature from not allowing offense and hurt to drive you into insanity. But If you did kill that part of you, it's more like you are broken, not changed which is not healthy in the least because a HSP broken forced to be a non-HSP is only a direct path to narcissism unlike one who isn't which is dangerous. What really happens with a broken HSP who died to themselves in a negative way to fit in with the norm is, they shifted it to themselves. A non HSP do not do that they are just who they are. However, a HSP shifting their emotions to themselves to be like everyone do not be like everyone else because they can't be anyone but themselves.

AH! FINALLY WE ARE RECOGNIZED for this GIFT!!! THANK YOU for this piece. I didn't even know this was acknowledged. I first saw it on TED TALKS on KZread, a woman, Elena Hierdiercherkoff (sp?) of Entreprincess talks about being hyper sensitive and she IS an Entrepreneur & has a foundation for, YES! HSP's! *"The Gentle power of HSP's" (Pls watch it will change your life!) It was so CATHARTIC hearing someone explain the MYSTERY of my LIFE!!! My mother always would say," stop being a drama queen," if I'd cry and feel devastated when I saw a person or pet being hurt or was hurting. I HURT TOO. "Stop DWELLING on things." It felt so unnatural to try to qwell or push down my emotions for YEARS growing up. The rest of my family (very cold) didn't ALLOW it. My FATHER WAS an HSP. He felt deeply. Thank Heaven for that. I married an HSP and these were some of the best years of my life. Seeing all of you responding, we ALL GET IT! It doesn't feel lonely anymore! Thank U for sharing. I am grateful for all this Hsp family!!! I am grateful for KZread that recognizes the Universal connection. This "Brainy Dose" channel that brought this topic to light and us together to share. Particularly during this pandemic, which feels like a preference to "shall the fittest survive", Do any of you feel that? I also believe there exists a world that doesn't support artists, creatives, HSPSml, and visionaries . We need to help, support and protect each other. The ARTISTS and SAVIORS of the UNIVERSE, HUMANITY and our ANIMALS on MOTHER EARTH, THEY NEED US! Speaking if "sensitivity"; DO you know they say an animal's (mammals, in particular, dogs, cats (felines), cows, pigs, and more) sensory is so acutely developed to sound, vision, movement, and even their emotions, are 10x what we feel! Imagine, THEIR sensitivity. Sensing when they are going to be euthanized. Dogs (they howl and howl, it's gut wrenching.) I've worked in shelters for the past few years, trying to pass laws for no kill. All because we (man) can't afford to find room in a shelter for an innocent little creature that did nothing to deserve it. How about when we slaughter a cow? Yes, I did a documentary on cows (which are highly emotional animals, and how they cry as they're taken to be killed.) It hurts everytime I think about that documentary.) And even if you don't feel what I ("this" Hsp) feel(s), please remember, it's an innocent pure soul, with probably a bigger heart than any of us. It's so EASY; "JUST BE KIND", NOT cruel. It doesn't cost a thing, and it doesn't take more time or effort. KARMA will take care of ALL. LOVE can SAVE US. PROTECT what's valuable, our Beasts, our Children, All of YOU! And OUR Universe will radiate in harmony once again. I wish YOU LOVE! 💖✨🌠🌈🐋🦋

Any perfumed scent makes me miserable. I am greatly bothered by the scent of fabric softener sheets coming out of my neighbor’s dryer vent. I feel like I can’t breath and I don’t have asthma. The same with chemical smells. Spicy foods are a no no, as is garlic and raw onions. I’m a wreak in the dentist chair anticipating pain. I pick up on other people’s emotions at first sight. I am constantly reading body language although I don’t try to. It just happens. I could go on and on. I never heard of HSP’s until a few years ago when I read a book called “Highly Sensitive People.” The author escapes me at the moment. It sure helped me understand myself. I also feel joy and appreciate beauty to a heightened degree and have a very rich inner life, so it’s not all bad. In fact, sometimes it’s a gift.

I’m a senior citizen now, and bought HSP books over 17 years ago. My husband read them as a favor to me and it helped him understand...though in the end we parted because my son started having a lot of problems and had no one else to help him...16 years later (now), I’m still caring for him because of complex PTSD, Chronic Fatigue, and much more...But being an HSP, it’s so draining and I never get to take a break. Be careful to those HSPs who are also caregivers. I’m in burnout right now and trying to deal with this world, myself, my son, my husband now, 4 pets. I spend a lot of time on my iPad, listening to music, crying whenever it happens and letting it. All my life my sister called me Black Sheep, Bad Seed, and later betrayed me financially. I trust people. Last thing she ever said to me was that she was sick of my illnesses. I asked if she was referring to my anxiety and depression...apparently so! I will never talk to her again, and it doesn’t bother me...a weight has been lifted at last. I realized what she did was bullying. It’s an awful thing, feeling left out, invisible, weird, different, but now I don’t care what anyone thinks of me. I’m a generous person, empathic, creative, intelligent, can spot fake people easily, love nature...and yes I also get angry easily when people hide things from me, lie to me, etc. Being sensitive can be awesome and devastating too. I’m so happy to see people talking about this now. Have your family and friends read some books on HSPs. It’s so helpful for everyone. Take care of yourself and try to live a life for yourself as well as others. It’s harder than anyone knows, but please try. Still struggling with that one 💫💫💫🥰

Yeah, Carla, many of the traits your talking about are frequently labeled "OCD"-Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, by the DSM V Manual that is used for diagnosis. The problem with this diagnosis is that Psychiatrists typically see these features as "abnormal", even pathological, so they attempt to suppress these behaviors with medication. Pathologizing HSPs only intensifies our need to avert socialization with others who are critical or unresponsive to our needs. Finding support people in your life with people who are less critical and also HSPs who can relate to your needs can help you feel more normal. Also, I would encourage you to forgive yourself for things you've done in the past. This was also a biggie for me. SO IMPORTANT. Cognitively re-messaging to yourself things like: "I am not to blame.... I release the past and heal my present.... I don't need to punish myself any longer....I deserve healing.... I deserve peace... I AM OK." Speak these types of messages to yourself as you take long deep breaths and take these truths into the cells of your body. Hope this is helpful. Blessings and peace.

Carla Densmore The list in the video is almost 100 percent me!!! I also share many of your sensitivities whether mental, emotional physical. I wouldn’t call myself OCD but my mother was very much OCD and I am to an extent. One thing that seems missing on the list is sensitivity to cold and heat. In summer I am always the first one to feel overheated and in fall/winter I beat everyone else at being too cold!

You are overstimulated. The key is to find ways to calm that down. One good way is by quieting your mind and having a self care routine. One of my favorite movies is Man of Steel. Superman. He was also highly sensitive but his mother taught him to slow everything down and to control how he took in what stimulated him. You can take control of how you react to these things. Not always by avoiding. But finding ways to embrace then as well. It's all a process but possible to hone this trait.

Carla, thank you for this list. I would also add other people humming or whistling while I am thinking and working. I seriously dislike texting and e-mails because I can't see the expressions on people's faces or hear the intonation of their voices and so feel i'm missing information. Zoom meetings are torture: the flickering screen, distorted sound, keeping track of five people on the screen at once make it impossible to make meaningful connection with any one person. .Being sensitive to other's feelings, like you said, can hurt but it is the better part of empathy. I found, as a pastor, being sensitive and having empathy meant that I had to have courage. When someone in my church was hurt or angry with me, I had to get in the car and go see them, apologize where appropriate, and work things out. Often times then I would learn about ( and feel!) the pain in their lives that was driving the anger and hurt.

For instance, when talking to a colleague in the office, I am overhearing a telephone call, the air conditioner clicking on, smelling his aftershave or her perfume, noticing what clothes they have on, all at the same time as listening to the colleague. I was the same as you, a people pleaser, until one day it dawned on me these people think no more highly of you when you bend over backward to accommodate them. Saying NO to someone with an explanation as to why NO needs to be the answer sometimes it even has the effect of making THEM more cognizant of what is going on in YOUR life and the need for you to have priorities over your activities -- like getting through YOUR life! Try it, you might like the result.

I have been having heaps of anxiety if that's part of being an hsp? But also I feel intense love for animals and humans and angreat deal of empathy. I think hsps are wonderful human beings, the problem lies in the unnatural and harsh outside world that most people are hardened to but we are not. Luckily enough I had the right professional help along the way to get me going in the right path. Talking about myself, finding the right professionals is the key. It doesn't resolves the loneliness as you can imagine from what comes next, being a single father who sacrificed his love life for his kid, I ended up living or feeling alone all the time. Now that my daughter is old enough and her mother is back on her two feet and can take some of the pressure off, I can now think about my love life. Yet again, it is a long process.... Never the less, watching that video, and thinking about the solutions I have come up for myself throughout my life, it gives me good indication that I am on the right path and that I might have or will eventualy find the right woman for me. Given I can take care of myself without the help of anyone now. There are still tougher times where I can feel the loneliness, but saying that it is often late in the day when it happens, so maybe I should just go to bed a little earlier when it happens? :) Anyhow, thank you for sharing this video and feel free to come by my channel. Is anyone exploring the Nexus of highly sensitive people and PTSD. One makes you much more likely to experience the other is my guess. Both demand quality sleep to function.

Hi Dan. I have been an HSP all my life. 11 years ago I emotionally crashed, and took a one year medical leave from my job. I received counselling for the first time in my life. After a few months, my therapist revealed that I was suffering from PTSD. It blew my mind! I thought only military or police experienced that sort of thing. She said that it stemmed back to my childhood. Further probing revealed a reoccurring common-thread pattern of behaviour that emerged in work-related scenarios and personal relationships. A few years ago, I wrote about it. Here is an excerpt that others might relate to... “What surfaced through reflection with wise counsel over time was a life of self-denial deeply rooted in my mind, and embedded in my spirit so much so, that I would find myself acquiescing to the wants of others over mine - the root of which is not so bad - A deep desire to please. Add to that “non-assertiveness" was likened to disease - A target for the bully to abuse, and prey upon, and easily manipulate to get just what they want. My life was like a series of accommodating others, while laying aside my own desires - swept under the covers. A lack of self-respect led to a long propensity...of sacrificing hopes and dreams and lost identity.” I’m now 65 years of age. I’m retiring in two weeks time. My advice to young people with HSP is... 1. Respect and like yourself enough to stand up to anyone you vehemently oppose - even if it costs you your job. 2. Establish healthy boundaries with those who seek to control you - family, friends, and co-workers. 3. Be very aware of the tendency to deny yourself the simple pleasures of life. Travel. Explore. Discover. Enjoy! 4. Don’t be desperate to accept a job because you “need the work”. Go after a career you are drawn to - a job that appeals to you, and suits your personality. Learn contentment. Ambition is highly over-rated. 5. Listen, listen, LISTEN! Talk less, and focus on where others are at; but not to the exclusion of being open. 6. Cultivate and invest in the few friendships that are meaningful and mutual. Don’t waste time in mediocre acquaintances that drain you. Be real with those who are real to you. Well, there you have it, from a “Highly Sensitive Senior” 😂

I start to feel overwhelmed and agitated when I get interrupted to often when I’m trying to do something/get work done. Or even when I don’t have anything specific to do. It gets me off track. Creativity goes out the window.

Do you dislike when someone prints in all caps to convey yelling. And if so is it the same, worse or not as bad. And I would like to apologise for any and all people who raised their voice or yelled at you ever, I am sorry you had to deal with that. I hope the rest of your days are filled with happiness ☮️ peace, joy & love.

It makes me an excellent Communications and Relationship Consultant! Seeing and hearing the subtleties within human voices and behaviors has me get to the truth faster, and then the solutions as well! It’s hard to turn it off when just being a friend. I have a handful of great ones, but not a huge amount. My hubby is one too, so it works in our household!

Getting overwhelmed, noticing actions, feeling people's pain and my love for everybody. Yes HSP. Thought it was a device characteristic. My gratitude for video.

I've known that I'm sensitive for a good while now but I'm not as highly sensitive as I thought doing this tick the box video I got about 9/10 out of 13. when I thought I would of gotten at least 11 out of 13. Good video to be more self aware and be able to reference to for others. 👍
