13. Machiavelli

Once called the "teacher of evil," Machiavelli is today considered the founder of modern political science and political philosophy. He is said to have paved the way for modern republican ideas. His works were a major influence on Enlightenment authors who revived interest in classical republicanism, such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Very informative, but you missed out Machiavelli's point that the paid military man is not suitable for becoming a prince. This is a very important theme of Prince. Was this an omission or left out being prudent? 🙂

Machiavelli is the godfather of modern politics . Considering His time Machiavelli laid out excellent principles in "The Prince" That was the time of war, chaos and instability & Machiavelli laid out some solid principles in his book to bring stability into chaos.

@@Ehsaan_Rasheed no dear thats not what I meant by the term . What it means is that he was inductive or experimental in nature. He basically had seen the entire political context of his age and came up with the conclusions . Just like what a scientist does . He sees certain things and then comes up with idea. When he came up with an idea against morality, it didn't really mean that he was a barbarian or he didn't like normality it basically means that he saw the political context and came with the general idea that there is no morality working in and then he goes towards conclusions . So, him being empiricist implies the very nature of his dealing with politics

Dear Prof, can I request you to teach us how to apply Machiavelian Politics in real life ( work ) etc. Perhaps, we should know the dark art of this politics to survive , nevermind thrive in real life. Listening to you, it appears we face Machiavelian politics in everyday life at work....and I work in supposedly a humane field i.e. clinical medicine. Politics for me , turns out to be the physiology of social life.

Machiavelli cannot be given credit for liberating politics from morality. Many before him practiced the ideas prescribed by him. For example, Chanakya advocated similar ideas in 4th Century BC.
