13 Great Sega Game Gear Exclusives

Ойындар

Sega's chunky handheld, the Game Gear, is known primarily for its ports of Master System games. But... it did have a fair few console exclusives, and many of them are actually very good.
Here are thirteen of them that I'd particularly recommend checking out.
Did I miss any of the Game Gear's exclusives that you love, and think should have made the list?

    Loved Triple Trouble! What I found weird was that the game itself was easy, but the bonus stage to get to the new character introduced was pretty hard. Sonic 2 on GG is by far one of the hardest games I've ever played.

    Both of the Power Ranger games that were released on the Game Gear were unlike any other Power Ranger game out at the time as far as design goes. They were both very beautifully crafted Fighting games, and outdid even the Genesis Power Ranger game that was also a fighter. However, the Game Gear versions were not ports, but developed with the Game Gear in mind. I really suggest you take a look, as these two games are prime examples of how a fighting game could actually be done properly on the Game Gear.

    I must have gone through hundreds of batteries on GG Shinobi 2 alone! I was one of the few who didn't have a Game Boy, but Game Gear instead. Unfortunately I only had 3 games for it, which were shinobi 2, Aladdin, and Sonic 2 (which admittedly isn't the best title for the system). It's hard to match the charm those games give off especially when accounting for the time period they were released. I have many fond memories playing those games late at night, in bed, with the lights turned out, and THEN when you're deep into the game, and your hands are getting sweaty because you're farther into the final boss dungeon on Shinobi 2 then you've ever been, IT HAPPENS... the red battery light starts blinking and you know it's a race against time to beat the game before the system shuts off on you. What a soul crushing moment.. but it made me stronger. 💪

    GG Aleste had a sequel, known in the West as Power Strike II (confusingly a completely different game to Power Strike II on the Master System), and it's fantastic. Devilish is a good fantasy-themed Breakout style game (it had a sequel on the Mega Drive), and Wizard Pinball is a strange vertically-inclined pinball game that gets really good once you get used to the weird shape of the table. The Game Gear version of Ristar is worth mentioning too - different levels, different bosses, different collectables, a fully unique game in its own right.

    Sega Game Gear is my actual favorite to collect for, the only retro console/handheld I would entertain the idea of a complete collection. I have over 200 games. Amazingly, you covered 6 games here that I do not have (yet!). I could do a KZread channel exclusively on GG if I could figure out a way to record it. Crystal Warriors actually has a 2 player versus mode, which is very cool. Most 2 player GG games are great fun. There are too many baseball games, though. And Micro Machines is the only 4 player simultaneous game (I think). You get 2 players on one GG to make that work. There a couple Golf games that are 4 player but there is no link cable required for them. Like everything else, prices are going up but I don't think there's anything on GG that would ask for more than $600 for a loose copy, so a full collection is definitely achievable. I already have most of the most expensive ones anyway. An AC adapter is absolutely essential if you want to collect and play. Also, there's no region lock. Not very many people talk about GG, so thanks for doing this one! Great stuff!

  • @onaretrotip

    @onaretrotip

    Yeah, i wish there was a way to record GG games too, outside of emulation. We need a good HDMI interface device that supports GG carts. Interestingly, no handheld consoles ever had a region lock, until the Nintendo 3DS. That was the first! Thank you :)

    Thanks mate! I was lucky, I had a Game Boy as a kid, but also managed to get a Game Gear when they came out, so I had the best of both worlds. I never really minded the bulkiness as a kid, as the only time I ever really took it out the house was in the car, or on holiday in my bag. The battery life was an issue though, but batteries are much more efficient now than they were in the early 90s.

This has color graphics. Anyway I played this game as a ten year old and hated it at first. Actually I didn’t like any Game Gear game until I got out run. I thought it was brilliant at the time. The main reason the battery life is so poor is because it uses tube lighting for the screen backlight, you can mod it to replace the original tube lighting with an LED one. It's a common mod that lot's of people do and it's easy to find someone who will do it for you for a fee.

    Just put high mAh rated NiMH batteries in it. We used to play happily with NiCads that held all of about 650mAh, but NiMHs with 2400~2700mAh are pretty common nowadays, yet can be charged up so much faster. If you're really bothered then it's probably not much work to get hold of an old official add-on battery pack, rip it open and replace the original cells with 18650-type Lithium Ion ones. Or maybe a couple of large cuboid one-cell phone batteries, given that a typical Li-Ion is 3.7 to 4.2 volts, and the GG expects something in the 7.2 to 9.6v range (given it takes 6xAAs, with NiCads at 1.2 to 1.3v, NiMH at 1.25 to 1.4, and alkalines at 1.5 to 1.6, plus the AC adaptor at 9v dead) so you can only really use two of them safely, and a pair of 18650s probably doesn't hold much more charge than six NiMH AAs. As for power adaptors from the SMS or SMD... ours just came with one packed in, an actual GG branded one. There were versions of the console sold without it?! Seems a bit crazy given the battery tech of the time. We got a LOT of use out of our adaptor, so much so that it was something of a problem when the cable started to give out... Luckily generic ones work just fine, so long as you set them to 9v and the correct polarity. Actual current drawn isn't particularly high, less than half an amp, so you don't need an enormous or expensive power brick.

    We got hold of Defenders of Oasis through an informal GG swap shop set up between us and some of our friends, still got it now. Bit of a hidden gem, though the actual fight screens are a touch sparse. Played the hell out of it at the time... but now, seeing Crystal Warriors, sort of got the feeling that we only had the second-best. CW looks far more sophisticated, into the realms of 16-bit consoles or the GBA...

  • @T0m0zuki

    @T0m0zuki

    6 жыл бұрын

    onaretrotip Well, yes, I do agree that gameplay does matter much more that the graphics itself. But since both handhelds had similar games in terms of gameplay, I got stuck with Sega and literally forgot about Game Boy. I sold it in a year or so a bit too cheap, but what can I do now? :) Nintendo did offer a larger list of games but I thought they were kind of repetitive or at least worse ports than those on the GG. Shinobi, Jurassic Park, Road Rash etc. were some great titles almost on the same gaming level with Megadrive. I probably played them not only for days, but months. The game on Game Boy that was so addictive was only Super Mario Land, while others didn't attract me the way Sega did. But this is just my point of view. Most of my friends stayed with GB for a long time.

Sounds like some cool old classics, but I've been lately experimenting with emulators for Android and I'm waiting for a controller for a mobile phone that has a phone holder that should effectively turn it into a convenient handheld console. I know I won't be getting this old Sega console just to try out these games. • @onaretrotip

    @onaretrotip

    Hmm, I think with handhelds even more than home consoles, the games are the most important thing. Where Nintendo excelled with the Game Boy was they produced games that were specifically designed for handheld gaming, which is why the Game Boy will always be the better console for me. I love the Game Gear, as I said, but Sega seemed to release ports of existing Master System or Mega Drive games (mostly). Look at Super Mario Land on the Game Boy - it's Mario but a smaller version specifically designed for the small screen, and it works brilliantly. That's why the 3DS smashed the Vita, the Vita just generally has versions of games that are good on a TV. As far as battery life is concerned, yes it's poor, but batteries are far better nowadays than they were in the early 90s.

  • @todesziege

    @todesziege

    6 жыл бұрын

    I'll never understand why Sega didn't release a Game Gear II - a smaller, cheaper and less battery-hungry revision - like they did with their home consoles at the time. The GG overpowered even the Game Boy Color by a fair bit, and since they kept releasing software for it an improved version could have helped it compete better in the latter half of the 90's. And also why they didn't make a new Alex Kidd title for the handheld. It's slower pace seems like it would be a much better fit for a handheld than the Sonic games. It could have been their Super Mario Land.

    Powerfull than Game Boy Yes... but better ? Game Boy, bad such much better titles than Game Gear, and even black and white, they were giving more feeling like Real hand held, beside most of Game Gear games, were just looking more like Master System games in a small port... but even the better Sonic on Game Gear, was never worther than any Super Mario Land on Game Boy ( which they were all really exclusives Game Boy titles )... for my opinion, Game Gear was socks ( i don't mean offend opinion of anybody, i'm talking about my personal feeling obviously ), Game Boy, not only best hand held ever, but also, (still my opinion) best 8-bit console ever , even better than Nes itself ( specially sound board was amazing )

However, there are a few differences that really prevent me from enjoying it as much as Gargoyle's Quest. For one thing, it's ridiculous how this game demands perfection in its side view battle areas. If you take ONE hit from an enemy, you're immediately booted back to overhead view, AND you keep whatever damage you sustained in side battle view. That is enough to make me simply not want to play it.

    Yeah, I've played it, but I'm not a huge fan to be honest. It plays more like Space Harrier than a Panzer Dragoon game, but the aiming makes it pretty difficult to be accurate. It's probably worth buying if you can get it cheap, but I'd recommend you play it in your browser first to see if you like it before spending any money (check out the links in the description). Yes, it's Japanese only, but Game Gears are region free (FYI all handheld consoles before the Nintendo 3DS were region free, I believe).
