I just realised that there's a bit of missing audio at 4:09 - the full sentence should be "The four custom chips were merged into one multi-talented chip to save on manufacturing costs, and for the same reason they chose 3.5” floppy disks for the system’s media."

I was at E3 in 2004, and yes, the Phantom was there. I did see someone playing it until it BSODed. I tried to get a picture, but they noticed me and quickly restarted the system :(

The Phantom runs Windows XP Embedded, so it was a Windows PC with all non-gaming components removed. Still, the Taito Type X arcade system was also a Windows XP Embedded machine.

The Cosmos was scrapped because CEO Ray Kassar didn't want any internal competition for the Atari 2600. It would also be the reason that the 5200 would be delayed to market and some other internal projects were cancelled as well. BTW never heard of several of these, so nice research. The Ultravision would have been a really cool Vectrex-like self-contained system. And I'm still disappointed the Panasonic M2 never came out because the graphics were about halfway between the N64 and Dreamcast and would have come out just slightly after the N64. There are rumors that the manager responsible for the $100 million buyout of the M2 tech was shunned in a very Japanese way by relocating him to work somewhere very cold like Alaska or Siberia.

I really enjoyed your video. Excellent narration and I learned a lot. I was surprised that the two games Sewer Shark" and "Night Trap" was shelved for years due to the in-affordability of buying CD type games. They are so cheap now. I remember the late 1990's and itching to get a CD burner, and of course blank CD's which where almost a buck or two for one dollar in 1999 if my memory serves correct. I just recently watched the Spike Lee movie Clockers, and the main character buys this little kid a Sega VR headset that he wears in several scenes. I was wondering WTF that odd looking thing even was, but now I know! Must have been made before it officially got cancelled! They don’t really specify in the movie that it’s made by Sega. Spike Lee was probably given a free one by Sega for a kind of more subtle product placement (due to the lack of logos or specification). Pretty good movie BTW! Messed up as hell, but good.

My favourites of these consoles are the Taito/ Wowow, Neptune (they should have skipped the 32-X add-on), Indrema and to some degree the Konix Multi-system, which would only be viable with a good compiler that would mask the complexity of the different chips in the system, a bit like the excellent ASM-One for the Amiga 500.

The Phantom was meant to compete with PlayStation and Xbox. The Atari Brain Drain was in development after the Pong Consoles became a fad in the '70s. The Hasbro Control-Vision had a great features. Had it been released, we could've had games like Transformers and My Little Pony. I love it when Sega experiments new things, but scrapping a few like the rumored Sega Neptune.

I was so disappointed when the M2 was cancelled. I loved the 3DO and was super excited for the M2. It was also a shame when the Phantom disappeared. The original design was hideous but the smaller 2nd version still looks quite cool. The Phantom is an interesting one, because it's idea from 2004 is pretty much what consoles have become (and Microsoft's download-only Xbox One is apparently coming very soon). One that was missing was the Atari Jaguar VR - I always thought that looked so cool!

Not to say that more was expected out of such a device but the Atari Cosmos system, the way the "cartridges" or "cards" snap into it to load an already pre-installed game reminds me of these little kiddy toy "CD players" I had as a kid. You'd put the little plastic music CD into this little fake Walkman-like CD player and all it would do to play music is the CDs had a little bump that would click into the device to activate the corresponding song. For a little toy I'd say that's whatever but for a system by Atari that's pretty cheap. Although, with these little Atari mini arcades nowadays, they have all the games built into the memory (Centipede, Pac-Man, Rampage, etc, whatever they are) and you are locked out of all but the one the device is actually advertising.

There was a full colour one on the drawing board as well. If I remember correctly, the colour would be produced via mechanical colour filters that rotated in sync with a b&w source. They demonstrated a pair of glasses with a spinning filter that gave the perception of colour on a b&w Vectrex. I guess the spinning disk was too noisy or difficult to keep in sync for a consumer release.

How would the Action Gamemaster even work? Would they make the console a television and the modules would have the console's hardware (like the Super Game Boy) which would make the modules more expensive than the console, Or would they somehow shove 4 processors (Remember the Genesis had 2 processors), 3 graphics chips, a PCM sound chip (I don't see why perfect emulation of all 3 sound chips will be needed), a CD decoder, a DAC and an lcd controller. Inside a relatively tiny device with no heat issues so you can make simple cheap adapters. Maybe it is somewhere in the middle, It contains a NOAC, a dumb framebuffer and a resonably fast processor. The modules add the graphics chip and sound chip and load an emulation profile on the processor. This will still be a lot to shove into a tiny device at the time, the emulation will be slow and make all but the NES adapter expensive, but it is the most obvious implementation I can think of. Compare it to the Retron 3 which is 20 years newer and does LESS (no cd player or TV tuner). I can't find what processor the system uses but I doubt it is slower than 200MHz which is around 25 times faster than the Mega Drive and around 55 times faster than the SNES. It is still not portable and bigger. Edit: I found the Retron 3 uses 3 System on a Chips. Not Emulation.

I also had high hopes for the M2 system, but in hindsight, maybe it was better it never happened. For me it was the 3DO M2, it was actually ready, they just had to ship it to stores and that's it. It had slightly higher specs than a N64, but with a CD-ROM drive, these machines would generate Dreamcast-like graphics. Their controllers would also feature an analog stick, the CD drive was a 4X speed, so loading times would be half those of the competition CD based consoles. Panasonic products back them were nearly indestructible, so I doubt it would have laser issues like the Ps1, or faulty analog sticks like those on the N64 controller. While the PS1 and N64 could generate 180.000 and 160.000 texturized polygons per second, respectively, the 3DO M2 could generate 500.000 with the same effects..... I'm sure it would've put a good fight against the veteran consoles, as they were already showing their age.

The M2 would have been fantastic if 3DO hadn't had Trip Hawkins at the helm. The Saturn could have been a much stronger contender if they would have just let the genesis be. Unfortunately, Sega had two captians and they did Not like each other. I honestly not think that any of the other systems would have fared very well. By the time they would have come out on the market, the established Kings would have walked all over them. The truly unfortunate part is that ATARI shot themselves in the head by not establishing some kind of quality control on the enormous heaps of shovelware that pretty well cause the Game Crash. I'd say that if they looked further than 2 months into the future, we might have been playing on an Atari Playstation.
