13 German Panzers vs 1 French Tank - Billotte's Rampage at Stonne

During the Second World War, tanks were used to new extremes on the battlefield and they were a key weapon of war. World War 2 tanks are dominated by T-34s, Panthers, Tigers and Shermans. The Char B1, the French heavy tank isn't known as one of the best tanks of the conflict, however it was incredibly sturdy and strong in defensive formations at the start of the conflict. It had very thick armour with a very capable set of weapons onboard.
The Battle of Stonne was a key part of the early German invasion of France. It was fought over the village of Stonne and heavy fighting took place in this area, with Stonne switching hands over a dozen times over a few days. During the intense battles, a moment would take place which would seem unbelievable. One French Char B1 Tank would manage to wipe out 13 German Panzer tanks.
The Panzers were hiding and waiting to ambush the French vehicle, but General Billotte was at the helm, a rather incredibly Tank Commander. He would manage to withstand around 140 hits in his thickly armoured Char B1 Bis, and would manage to also destroy every single one of the German tanks. So join us today as we look at '13 German Panzers vs 1 French Tank, Billotte's Rampage at Stonne.'

There were numerous successful actions in the battle of france we don't hear of from the siege of Lille to the defense of Calais where the French armed forces fought heroically but of course that isn't what the general public wants to hear nowadays so these tales become harder and harder to find

It's probably more about Germany steamrolling France. People don't want to be reminded of that. But as far as I can see it had nothing to do with the French having inferior apparel or lack of courage in their men. The government declared war against Germany against the will of the people. The people of France was against the war but the government tried to force them anyway. I've read a book called Grenanadier and it's the memoirs of a German general. During the invasion of France he went ahead of his army in a civilian car and he saw fields with abandoned military equipment everywhere. The French soldiers had just left and gone home. Probably in protest against their government. But the same goes for Britain and USA. The British people were against declaring war on Germany but changed their mind after France had fallen. And the people of USA didn't go along until Pearl Harbor. That is a big part to why Germany could be so successful in the beginning.

@@chrissibersky4617 entirely inaccurate. For one, the French may have been reluctant to go to war again (certainly), but they recognized the threat the Germans posed and took up their duties as they knew had to be fulfilled. Secondly, it is a repeated German anecdote/witness testimony with little hard evidence. True military reports from both sides paint a far different picture. One of French soldiers holding the line, falling back to new defensive lines, holding again, then making a heroic final stand, whilst dispensing all available ammunition and ordnance, going to complete exhaustion before surrendering, or in some cases, fighting to the death.

@@tbuxt3992 There were pockets of resistance from the French. Germany only occupied the north coast of France and left the rest alone to start with. Most of the control of France the Germans left to the French them self. They only had to fight a small group of rebels from France. Of course the people didn't like the situation but they also got betrayed by their own government. I'm Swedish and we have a similar situation here now. We have been neutral for more than 200 years and for two weeks recently we had our first female prime minister and she decided to end our neutrality over the head of our people. Instead of sending medical support, food etc to the civilians she sent weapons to one side of a conflict and applied for our nation to join Nato. If the other side of the conflict decides to attack us a lot of people would say "it's not my war. No one asked me.".

How refreshing, to get to see a video about German tanks NOT winning. These were real tanks, too; the German Pzkw I and Pzkw II were almost tank "trainers." The Pzkw I, especially. Most of them became scrap metal and returned to Germany as Soviet tanks. Enough Pzkw IIs survived to get their chassis repurposed as SP guns, but very few of them are around, today. Thanks for posting this.

Both Panzer 1 and 2 were designed explicitly for war and combat. The 'trainer' tank thing is a myth. You don't build trainer tanks out of expensive and hard to produce armor steel.

Great video!! Amazes me how US tankers and late war Brits would often complain about going up against the mid-late war German armored vehicles when their munitions would just bounce off of the Tigers/Panthers. Everyone seems to forget that the Germans ran into that very same problem against British, French, and Soviet armored vehicles during the beginning stages of the war.

Radio. That was the difference. The Germans could out maneuver the French due to superior communications. The French didn't have them in their tanks. Or if they did, not many. (please correct me if I'm wrong) Every German tank had some type of radio. But sometimes the French did win. They fought very well, despite the bad reputation they somehow have gained. It was their generals that let them down, not having adapted to this new form of mobile warfare.

6:05 In this case one expensive tank can destroy 13 tanks that together probably cost much more to make then that one expensive tank. Sounds like a good investment in expensive weapons.

Shows that armour really is not everything. Some KV1 and KV2 tanks would stop the Germans. And so did the Germans later with some of their heaviest tanks where they stoped the allied ones. But in the end. Those heavy vehicles didn't stop the battles. Manouverability and reliability are key factors in a modern warefare. It is strange how the Germans moved away from it in later years where they pretty much ended up having engagements which played out like when they encountered the Char B1 or KV1/KV2. But it didn't help them win the battles.
