Great video man, too bad this video wasn't around when I still had my yzf. Keep it up, there's plenty of people out there that want to do this work themselves, but are not sure which way to do things. They learn better from hands on, and your how to's definitely show that. Keep it up.

Thank you for your reply. I have yet to take the cover off and viewing your video gave me a little better idea whats in there. I am a certified tech so like yourself I can mentally visualize everything in there that could be a cause. It really sounds like a rod Knock but definitely is not a rod bearing or in the internal engine itself. It is for sure coming from the clutch area and more localized right where that shift shaft is but it has to do with whatever is rotating in there... (continued)

Hmmm this has got me bewildered. Has to be something to do with the clutch then... maybe oil pump or water pump but those seem to be operating perfectly (great pressure). Really weird cause it doesnt matter if its engaged or disengaged in neutral or in gear and is RPM dependent for rate that it "knocks". Shifts beautifully and runs like nothing is wrong but obviously its not supposed to make that noise. Be pulling the cover off and hopfully pin point it. Thanks for your input!

well in your situation, the sift shaft tab is likely bent. causing interfearance with the star gear, so shift praw, cant turn the star cam all the way to the next gear. first thing to try is to replace that shaft, you might get lucky. and you can do that on with the bike on the side stand and WITHOUT drainig the oil. follow the steps in this vid, the shaft comes up at about 11:26. now over time the half shift wears the dogs on the gears (see my other videos about transmission internals)

thank you for the compliment. i know it is a common problem in the yzf and across many motos. nobody had done a video and i had to repair mine so it wasnt that much more work to record it.

no, a clutch problem would be an all the time problem, not just a certain gear problem. you might be refering to the "shift kit" sold by factory pro. that will improve shifting in all gears. but it wont "fix"anything just improves the action. if you already have wear in the 1 - 2 shift. only solution is to replace those parts. my other vidoes show those parts.

Hi mate, good vid. I have a fazer 1000 and when you let the clutch out it judders a little bit, any idea what it could be, clutch isn't slipping as it pulls strong through the gears. Cheers

I have a 2006 yzf600r I put it in first but my bike either does two things 1. it wont go forward at all I have a lot of slack in my chain, or 2 it will only go about 5-10 mph and my clutch is very tight but it sounds like my chain is popping off when I apply the clutch to shift. could it be a clutch issue or a chain issue?

  • @singlestallgarage

correct if you pull the cluctch lever nothing besides that which is driven off the crank shaft is spinning. if you let go fo the lever but are in neutral, then the input shaft of the transsmission is also spinning with the crank, and the other obvious stuff., noisy waterpump or oil pump? they are in that area though not exactlly where you are describing, but they are always spinning. the crank turns the oil pump the oil pump turns the water pump.

question - if you have engine on bike, you don't disassemble the clutch, but because of curiosity you take the clutch push rod out of the engine from the left side - is there any chance for the ball bearing to fall in the engine?

Great Video, question for you since you seem very familiar with this bike. I have a 96' YZF and I get a clicking noise (sounds like a rod knock but its not) and I have localized it to right where that shift arm is. It doesn't seem to matter whether its in neutral or any gear and doesnt change with the clutch released or pulled in. The noise speeds up and slows down with the RPM of the engine. Runs, performs, shifts great. Idea on what it is? star gear? shift arm? Thank you!

oh, the shift shaft is about 60 bucks, so if you have the tools and the abilities its worth trying before pulling the whole motor.

From time-to-time my 97 yzf600 bumps into second gear and won't engage. 20,000 kms (14,000 miles). Any thoughts as to why? I changed oil to a lucas synthetic... wondering if it needs true YamaLube? Or is that fork bent maybe? If U think it's the fork - have got a link to replacing it with engine left as is?

i think i understand what you are saying. and broken parts are never good. a picture would help alot. as always check out yzf600r.com join the forums and ask your questions there. your original problem was likely a bent tab on the shift shaft. the pressre plate should come out pretty close to even when disengauged. check the forums for spacifics.

Vashts, I have a question on the clutch side of the bike. I've just changed the front sprocket and chain and want to put the sprocket cover back on. The only problem is, I can't remember what the arrangement is to get the clutch to work. I'm frustrated as heck... can you suggest something. I'd be happy to chat by phone, if you were feeling really generous.

it is more coming exactly coming from that corner where the shift shaft is but I cant eliminate that it isnt the clutch. just to confirm... when i disengage the clutch (pull the lever in) then nothing in the transmission should be spinning, correct? only things spinning should be the obvious cams, crank and those necessary things? I cant imagine it would be a spring for the clutch went loose and is just banging around on a post on the basket. Prob make huge mess running bike with cover off

hello nice video, quick question.. I have a 1992 yzf that rolls in gear, it select's the gears but doesn't seem to register and rolls like its in neautral. I've took the clutch out and it's pretty burnt out do you reckon it could be more than just the clutch plates and more of a selector problem? it seems to shift up an down the gears smoothly but it's like its in neautral obviously it's ment to hold when it's in gear any suggestions !? cheers dude

with the side cover off you can see the shifter working and know. clutch and springs could be worn. but they can be measured for spec. check the other side of the bike, under front sprocket cover, make sure the nut is still there holding the sprocket on

I also have a question I'm having similar issues, I have an 06 Yamaha Yzf 600r it shifts fine 1st to 2nd but once I hit 3rd it doesn't increase speed and sounds like it's "choking"/"bogging" , 4th it doesn't do anything, 5th it barely even revs..... occasionally it will just die when down shifting coming to a stop sign or red light for example.. then I can kick it into 1st let off clutch and it fires up like nothing.... I'm overwhelmed and extremely frustrated because I have no idea where to start or what's causing all this......

thats a tuffy, clicking huh? thats one im not familiar with and im having a tuff time picturing what that might be star gear is a permanent fixture to the shift drum, i dont think its that. shift arm might be vibrating some (havent had that though) but i dont think it would click., sorry friend, i suggest joing the forums at yzf600r.com and asking your question there.
