Larrybs has the answer and parts always hold onto your starters never turn them in on a core rebuild them. Buy a new starter as back up to rebuild. Always bang air filter bottom side down on a clean piece of paper. I’ve seen horror stories of casting material in brand new air filters smoke new motors

Yes i repaired my origional starter in my 1996 for 25.00

Just turn the key without cranking and look at the alt gauge, if the voltage is up your batteries are 👍 mine just started doing this today 🙃

I had that same problem on my 1st gen dually, it usually happens out of the blue at the least convenient time. It happened to me in a restaurant parking lot and I had to have a friend pull start it but I guess you'll have that on these older trucks.

Yep a bad starter, cables, connections, and weak batteries can all cause slow cranks on pretty much every engine. Sometimes bad cables, that have corrosion on the inside where you can't see, can also wear out a starter since it makes it have to work harder.

Air filters like the one you replaced, are designed to be air blown clean and a recharge kit is available for it. All at a cheaper price than that new filter you put on it.

My 6.0 just did this Saturday. Ran and drove fine in the a.m. went to leave a job and really weak crank. Through two batteries on it and still did the same thing. Tried the jumper wire for the starter and still cranked weak. Put a 6.4 starter in and man what a difference.

I had the same problem with my 2nd gen also. And I changed the starter out and it fixed it. Cranks just fine now. Does that truck not have the diesel heater in that you can plug up so it cranks better on cold mornings?

Low battery is the number one killer of starters across the board

I think the tool boxes as well as the chrome trim on the back of flat nasty would look much tougher painted black. Just a thought

My cousin's truck was doing this and it was the PCM that was going bad he had to go to the junkyard and you got to try to find one of them match and sometimes you got to get the truck reprogrammed that he put it in his truck and no more problems from there on out

On the white truck it’s probably the battery not pushing out enough CCA. Do a load test to check if the battery is bad. I had one that wasn’t pushing enough CCA during the mornings until the day warmed up. Then one day it just went out and that was it.

Had the same issue with my 1500 it did it randomly tested it showed that it was good and then when I put a load on it and tested it is when it showed it was bad battery I changed it and haven't had that issue since

It's actually good for an engine to crank like it did after the new one any faster and oil hasn't had time to get around the engine and it causes in needed wear but obviously it shouldn't crank like it did at first

Probaly high resistance or shitty batterys or short or ground on starter

I got a 1994 dodge ram 1500 gasoline v8 5.9 engine and the issue I have is that when it cranks it smells like gas lots of black smoke comes out then goes away and its feels like it chokes when Im at a red light

Finally got my first Diesel and I love it!

Probably has a bad spot in the starter my truck is doing the same thing just have not changed it yet. One way to see if that is the problem is next time it does it take a hammer and tap on the starter a couple of times and see if it will start

these old starters are far superior and contacts/brushes can be rebuilt for like 100$- don't replace just fix. easy

i had that starter problem on a 2004 Ford Explorer Limited it could be worn teeth

Grandpas truck might be a neutral safety switch. Try putting it in neutral then see if it starts

But it would be fine he said you would drive it some or shut it off come back out it wouldn't start he said you can hook a vehicle to it and try to jump it wouldn't do nothing he said you could come back the next day turn the keynote fire right up like there was nothing wrong with it he said that that's why the PCM was going bad I had corrosion on the inside you couldn't see it but it is common in Dodges especially the gas trucks

Sounds like your running off the battery on your grandpa's truck. Have alternator check.

If it was my truck I would get a starter from somewhere other than Autozone.

@@LOUDNPROUD compared to other parts stores, Autozone parts aren’t very good. I’ve heard lots of people say they have to exchange parts at Autozone all the time because they fail regularly. On one car I had I went through 3 alternators before I got a good one. On another car I got 2-3 fuel pumps and all of them failed and after the last one failed I demanded my money back and went somewhere else and didn’t have another issue.
