Hey did yours overheat? Mine did after a few minutes, and after I thought about it, microwaves are usually only on for a few minutes to heat your food, so they might not be designed to run for long periods of time like if you were to use it to charge batteries for example. Do you think if I were to add extra windings to the primary it would help stop it from overheating?

@@vistanationrockafellaz yeah you're right. I just enjoy experimenting with stuff like this. Trying to find 100amp diodes is difficult too. I tried those big 10 amp diodes and made a bridge rectifier but they popped like popcorn the moment I connected the terminals.

I found that putting a resistor on the positive output limits the current draw and after that the transformer was warm but not hot.

Nice project, well done video 👍 Did you find the transformer issue ? I believe it's from the eddy currents caused by the loose plates. Compare this transformer now, with how it was BEFORE tear down. The plates are compressed, welded, and resin sealed under vacuum . But for now you could bolt it together using high grade non-magnetic bolts.

I have a switch the I salvaged from a computer power supply that you switch from 220v to 110v, will that help? Thanks in advance and again great viceo!!!!!

You will get roughly half the voltage output. The voltage in the video is too high for a 12VDC system, so first of all reduce the 22 turns to more like 17 or 18 turns. Now double that, to give the same secondary voltage at half the primary voltage. This would also increase the primary circuit current by a factor of two, for a given load. It is simple ohm's law arithmetic here. When you get to high school you can learn stuff like this in physics class. If you are already out of school and you missed that, get a good book on electricity, magnetism, and safe wiring and electrical practices before you plug anything in to anything.

Mr. Electron the 750Watt Microwave oven has microwave oven transformer (MOT) core that is calculated for the 375Watt RMS out put power. So 375Watt : 10.5Volt = 37Amp Max Output current. That why it has a current shunts build in between primary and secondary coil.

You are always limited to the capacity of the primary winding. A microwave is generally designed to run slightly below 1kW. 100Amps * 12v is 1.2kW. I highly doubt that this old microwave transformer was designed to handle that, thus it would blow up eventually. To increase the amps, decrease the number of winds on the secondary. It'll give you lower voltage but higher current. Also the wire used in the secondary in the video will never take 100Amps lol. This video is ridiculous

Just remember that microwave oven transformers are made on the brink of saturation, they are not meant for continues operation out over 15 minutes. They will destroy themselves from heat over a longer period of time. If you want to avoid this, add some more primary turns to lessen the Volt/turn product a bit.

Nice project. I measured a MOT saturation curve, they are deep into saturation (maybe 100 VA) at nominal input. Another solution is to use two identical MOTs with primary windings in series, so that each one operates at half voltage. You can then wind the secondaries and connect to suit. This configuration would run much cooler even if the primaries are aluminium. I would suggest using much thicker copper wire if your target is 100A continuous capability. I have a YT video to show over 1000A from a single MOT transformer with a 2 turn secondary when I paid attention to keeping resistances low. I use it for wood branding art.

Cool information. Just want to ask, is it possible to run continuosly if you put some heat sinks and also fan?Thank you.

@@sikismeker The transformer is already forced air cooled in a microwave oven, it can only postpone the inner turns getting cooked, by a small margin.

Great work man, is it possible to start a motorcycle using this method, just for a couple of seconds when the battery is dead?
