I'm just learning about circuitry and electric motors and actually was wanting to build an e bike from a stingray that originally was my brothers and has been sitting under a porch for a decade. Your post is very informative and is explained well. Thanks

I´m a big friend of selfmade electric vehicles. Your Bike is a big inspiration for me! Thank you. Some years ago i saw the "eRockit" Bike and was blown away how cool this thing was (and even is). But the whole thing is even cooler when it looks selfmade with brain and love! Sorry for my bad english. Keep on exploring, explaining and inventing, Daniel from Germany.

The motor is beautiful. My 1Hp when double voltage would cook even with 1/3rd the weight on a run like that . I'd like to see the BMS schematic and software but only for night reading purposes albeit incomplete or messy. I too built my first one around the same time with homemade controller also using pic16 & IRF1404(5). That is truly a fun looking machine!

Excellent work! BTW for about $30 you can get bolt on frame attachment points to use a disc brake for that front. Of course you need to buy a new wheel with a disc brake. I'd recommend the ones with dot 3 break fluid -- super safe and the feel you get is just like a car's foot pedal only through the fingers. Any chances of sharing the 300 amp motor controller circuit?

2 weeks ago I took delivery of my electric bike, the rules are quite diffrent in the Netherlands. In NL this would be considered a moped and you wouldn't be able to register or insure it (witch is mandatory for mopeds to drive on public roads) the most common electric bike in NL is the pedal assisted type, so you have to keep force on the chain or the motor will stop. max assisted speed is 25km/h.

in the uk ebikes suck.... the electric motor shouldn’t be able to propel the bike when it’s travelling more than 15.5mph the motor shouldn’t have a maximum power output of more than 250 watts It must also display one item from each of the following: the power output or manufacturer of the motor the battery’s voltage or maximum speed of the bike

You mentioned that when you used regenerative braking you dumped 100 amps back into the batteries. What exactly defines the maximum amount of burst current you can feed into a lipo pack exactly? Is it just the charge C rating or does it only really matter that you dont overheat the pack and or charge it at a voltage that causes some kind of breakdown internally?

Those little RC batteries have amazing energy density and the current makes me a little frightened. Did you consider a thermal cut-off, or did I miss it? Thanks! The batteries make me nervous too, something like 1000A short circuit current each! it's nerve wracking making those connections in that tiny box. There is a thermistor so the BMS knows the battery temperature, yes. I'm in Vancouver, BC actually, BC and Ontario both have similar laws I believe.
