125 Years of Fighting Mosquitoes: What Needs to Change? [World Mosquito Day 2022]

Why are mosquito-borne diseases still so pervasive?
What new technologies can help turn the tide of mosquito control efforts?
How can we overcome challenges with mosquito control partnerships?
What needs to change to achieve malaria elimination?
Despite 125 years of efforts since Sir Ronald Ross’ discovery that female anopheline mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans, the world is still confronted with the devastating impact of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases.
Challenges to malaria vector control have grown in recent years, threatening global goals to significantly subdue malaria by 2030. Service disruptions due to COVID-19, insecticide resistance and mosquitos’ behavioral adaptations are just some of the challenges limiting the effectiveness of vector control and threatening decades of progress. These challenges can only be overcome through reinvigorated action and multisectoral collaboration.
The next few years present a clear call to action for businesses to work towards a rapid acceleration of progress towards mosquito control. This will require bold partnerships, smart use of both trusted and emerging tools, and the collective will to address underlying systemic challenges.
In order to analyze the impact of current vector control interventions, and identify ways to make up lost ground in the fight against malaria and other diseases, GBCHealth’s Corporate Alliance on Malaria in Africa (CAMA) brought together leading vector control experts in commemoration of World Mosquito Day.
This event identified new opportunities to gain momentum at this pivotal juncture by improving cross-sector collaboration for mosquito control, with a focus on the role of innovative vector control interventions and cross-sector collaboration. This is not a time for business as usual, and the malaria community needs to intensify mosquito control efforts to meet the rising challenge.
