$120 eBay Vehicle Rooftop Awning Review - 4K

PRODUCT LINKS:
AMAZON: amzn.to/36uNijB
EBAY: ebay.us/N5MYYy
A review of my $120 generic-brand rooftop awning I bought new off of eBay. At less than half the price of name brand awnings I figured it was worth a shot. Check it out! The awning I am reviewing is 6.6' x 8.2'.
Be sure to Subscribe so you don't miss out on the adventures to come! Also, check us out on Facebook, Instagram & www.NarrowRoad... !
UPDATE: While I still have not had any issues with my awning after 2 years, I have been informed of a couple buyers who have had some issues. One buyer said the mounting bolts offered had too small of a head to fit snugly in the rail. Another buyer didn't have this problem but had the zipper pull tabs break. For the price, we still see the awning to be a good value.
Note: I am in no way affiliated with the eBay seller nor the product manufacturer. I purchased this product with my own money off of eBay for $119.90.
The above product links are affiliate links meaning that by buying through our links we receive a commission from Amazon or eBay. This does not affect the price you pay but does help support our channel and website cost.

    What??!!! Only $119.90 ?!! My side awning is hand made (I made it), and probably I spent preatty much the same on building the sucker !!! And I had the trouble!!! Damn !!! That's a bargain !!! Well done. Even if needs some work to make more rough, It´s worth everyday !! Tarp and alluminum, what can go wrong? LOL !! Cool video !! Thank's for sharing, really !! I'm telling everyone, LOL LOL !! Cheers

    LOL! Yeah, tell your friends! That's cool you made your own though! The other day I looked and this eBay seller had the tan version of mine discounted to $92 US Dollars!! I enjoy a good deal and always glad to help others do the same. In reality, these awnings should only cost about $100, not $280 like some companies ask. The market for overland gear has become very inflated. It's crazy that items like rooftop tents cost $1,500+ USD when they should only cost about $700. The demand for this stuff is so crazy high right now, companies can ask whatever they want and still sell out of stock. It makes sense, it's really cool stuff! Eventually, I hope to get a rooftop tent but it's currently not in the budget with a child on the way. Cheers!

    the million dollar question why don't you not get a old projector pull-down screen. I mean you going to get one of those for like 50 bucks. and they come in a metal enclosure. you pull the thing out and then you put grommets at the end the part where the handle is and then you can just buy some holes and so when you mount it you just pull it out you put the poles in you put some cables and you're done

    I was looking for a video on a review of this, thank you so much, I am glad you included how it is mounted, I might do carriage bolts from the metal channel into a light bar clamp to my basket. If you haven't already installed a rooftop basket to hold extra gear, I highly recommend the Rola Vortex roof rack, I even grabbed the extension for it to make it 6ft long, and it came in under $200 and looks just like a Yakima worth $800+

  • @NarrowRoadAdventures

    @NarrowRoadAdventures

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hey Scottie! Yes, carriage bolts should work you may need to cut/grind down the sides of the head to make it rectangular so it doesn't spin in the channel when tightening. $200 is a good buy for a roof basket! Thanks for the heads up. I am going to make a flat rack for mine to better mount my roof top tent. I have the tubing bent up but haven't welded it yet. Glad this helped you! Drilling holes into the top support bar was not a good idea. If you ever have to use it to support a rooftop tent or cargo container, you will have to but new support bars because drilling holes in it has weakened it tremendously!

    TheRayDog Right I would guess all these cheap no-name ones are the same, eBay or Amazon. I have a friend who has an ARB awning and this awning and he says the ARB is a fairly better made and more robust. Yeah those bat wings are nice but I mostly didn’t want to go that route because my back hatch would hit it. Do you think it would keep you dry during rain? Do you think it would rip easy?

  • @NarrowRoadAdventures

    @NarrowRoadAdventures

    6 жыл бұрын

    The rainfly material is made of a woven fabric material that is moisture wicking and has a waterproof layer on the bottom side. It is heavier duty than a typical tent rainfly and would expect it to be pretty durable and help prevent ripping. Due to the waterproofing I of the material I expect it to continue to keep rain out. I plan to coat the topside with a waterproofing spray (like Campdry) just for good measure but probably not necessary. Like all awnings, in rain you will want to lower one corner a bit to help with water run off so it doesn't pool in the middle. Hope this helps!

  • @NarrowRoadAdventures

    @NarrowRoadAdventures

    3 жыл бұрын

    That’s a good question, Brian. We have both depending on what trip we do and both suite different people’s needs. Easy ups work well for someone who like to camp the same spot all weekend. However, most times for us and those who are into “overlanding” will travel and stay different places each night. Easy ups take 5 times longer to setup and pack away. That might not be a big deal for a couple days but after a couple weeks of taking hours to setup and tear down each day, it gets wearing. A traveling overlander is constantly looking for time saving convinces.

For the money it has definitely been worth it. I hope to do a 1 year review video soon. Unfortunately, the seller sold out of them and the link I have posted doesn’t work. I can’t speak for specific applications but at long as it has a roof rack it can be installed with a little ingenuity. You could mount it the same way I showed I did.

  • @NarrowRoadAdventures

    It depends on your application. I did but the mounts are made to attach to roof rack bars running parallel with the awning and use the flat piece of bracket and L-shaped bracket to sandwich on both top and bottom of your roof rack. Hope that helps.

    Great video! I've been contemplating ordering this awning, but the low price scared me! LOL I just ordered the 7.6X8.2 (tan) for my Ford Expedition ($153 for the xtra large). How is your awning holding up? And how often do you use it? I will be using mine almost daily.

  • @NarrowRoadAdventures

    @NarrowRoadAdventures

    3 жыл бұрын

    We have been using it for the past 3 years and it has held up very well and have since bought another bigger one for our trailer. If I was going to be using it daily I would spend the money for a more expensive and higher quality one but for the average adventurer that does a couple weeklong trips and several weekend adventures a year, such as us, this awning will do them just fine for several years. I hope it does you well for a while and is worth the low buck spent. We still feel it’s a good value for what it is, a simple awning. Thanks for watching.

    This should only be used as a quick way to keep it in place for a short period of time. For conditions with more wind, the guy lines would still be necessary. I should have clarified that better. Too strong of winds, the awning should be packed away.

    Darill Fowler Yes, I need to do a long-term review video. The awning has held up well and no change of opinion of it, still pleased. I did order another one about 6 months ago for my off road trailer that I found the quality to not be quite as high and a couple quality control issues that were easily corrected. While maybe not quite as good of quality as models 3 years ago, sometimes they are on sale cheaper. I still think it’s a good value for the average user. Hope that helps. Thanks for the comment and watching. Will try to get an updated video out to ya. Adding a couple kiddos to the mix has taken up a lot of free time. Haha

    Will this set up work on my small rv trailer ?

  • @NarrowRoadAdventures

    @NarrowRoadAdventures

    5 жыл бұрын

    Anthony Zed I don’t see why it wouldn’t. You would have to figure out how you would mount it and depending on how tall your trailer is you would want to not mount it too high that the legs aren’t able to extend high enough. Of course, if you mount it too high it might be kind of difficult to reach it for setup. I have friends who have mounted these to their small off road RV/camper trailers and has worked well for them.
