[120] Alcohol Ink and Mica Powder on Yupo - Trying something new

This bit of alcohol ink art was a fun technique experiment for me and I love the way it turned out! It was painted on a 12 inch Legion yupo round using alcohol ink (Pinata blanco blanco, Tim Holtz / Ranger color eggplant, and Pinata metallic brass), color shifting mica powder (I don't know the brand or exact color names), and 99% isopropyl alcohol. I also used my 500 watt Revlon hair dryer (with the brush attachment removed) on the cool setting. Have fun giving this technique of alcohol ink art a try. I think you'll love the results you get!

Hi there! I'm recovering from foot surgery and bingeing you tube videos! I think I've watched every one of yours and I wanted to tell you that you're my absolute FAVOURITE artist on here! I've watched multiple others and cannot stand various aspects (their voice, the way they record, how they don't explain/explain too much, the fact that I don't like their work etc etc. I hope that doesn't sound TOO rude and snobby!) and I usually stop their videos and come right back to yours! I LOVE your style, your personality, EVERYTHING about your channel ❤️ I've got supplies in my Amazon cart from your affiliate links and hope to make some purchases once I'm back to my multiple jobs and earning money again! I've tried off and on to do this for about 4 years and I'm learning SO MUCH from you, any issues that I had are all making sense! I'm sooooo excited to be able to walk/stand again and get an art area set up. I'm trying to balance on one leg on my little knee scooter at the kitchen counter so that I can see my TV from there and watch you and follow along but the photo paper I'm trying to practice on is GARBAGE 😫😩 I'm using the back and it still just absorbs immediately, I can't move anything around AT ALL. I did order some of the craft plastic and it's much better but I'm horrible at this & I'd rather practice on something cheaper. I'm Canadian but raised my kids in Washington state. I also lived in SC for 5 years (two separate times!) and my 3rd son was born there! I much prefer NC and would pop up there as often as possible! Charlotte mostly but I had friends in Newbern and Havelock so got out there sometimes as well. I home schooled my kids, you home school your granddaughters ❤️ So we've got a few things in common plus I think we're close in age! Anyway, doing this on my phone and can't see much of it, hope it makes sense! Been wanting to say hi and comment for a few weeks but can't from my TV, so got on my phone to finally let you know how amazing and appreciated you are! I looked for the most recent video and am concerned that it's from 10 months ago. I hope everything is OK! Sending love and hugs from Saskatchewan 💜♥️

I love using mica powders in my alcohol inks! First time I tried it I used a waterbrush pen filled with alcohol and added the mica powder into the pen.

Wow! This came out beautifully 😍 What a good idea, using the blanco in this way, I’ll surely will try this also. I don’t have the powder, so will try this with just the blanco and eggplant. Can’t wait! Thanks so much for sharing 🙏🏼

Thank you very much! This works great without the mica powder, too. I have done a couple of practice paintings for that commission without the mica and I might like them better lol. If you have any of the Ranger indigo, it looks amazing on the blanco.

Hey, very cool & it was helpful to get this insight before I try applying mica powder to alcohol ink, but I do want to say- it’s really important that you wear some kind of mask/ideally an actual respirator when working with these mica/pigment powders. Inhaling even a little of them is extremely bad for you, & they are light enough to end up in the air very easily. I mean, not wearing a mask is also probably why you were getting a headache- inhaling alcohol fumes on a prolonged basis is also really not good for you, though with that it seems like some people get away with just working in a ventilated environment (I’d wear a mask personally, since we have them from the pandemic anyway, unless I was straight up outdoors with a breeze- better safe than sorry), but with mica powders or epoxy resin, people actually do end up developing horrific lung diseases if they make a habit of working with them without a respirator, & it’s really tragic to hear some of their stories (it doesn’t even necessarily take many years of working with them to really get sick either, depending on how directly you end up breathing it in). Just wanted to mention it, because if just simply sighing was enough to blow the powder everywhere then I suspect you weren’t wearing a mask or respirator, & certainly headache is one immediate symptom you can get just from the alcohol fumes of the alcohol ink/iso mix. Safe crafting!

Gorgeous! I love how the branches are pink in some spots and purple and others. Do you think it’s purple where you had put the gold over the top of the Blanca? Also, I wonder if you mixed the mica powder with just a little bit of gel gloss, if it would stay on the Yuppo when you furnish it.

Thank you! I have done some experiments without the mica powders and got the same “mottled” sort of colors on the blanco, so I don’t think that affected it much. That’s a very good idea with the gel gloss! I’ll have to give that a try once I am back home where all my supplies are. One more month in WA, then back to NC! Yay!!!

Hi I'm new to your channel as I want to do some experimenting with alcohol inks, I intend to add mica powder so I'm not sure how it will turn out but this is truely gorgeous. I don't really know what the Blonco? is but it was the mica powder in the inks thats what I was watching for how they react together... I love your techniques and can't wait to give it a try... I'm binge watching some of your videos now 😁😁 thank you so much for sharing Elaine xx 💖

Newbie here!!!!! I’ve been watching a lot of your older videos. I Like your style and how you talk and give great hints here and there. I’m looking to buy some inks. Already hit Michaels but not much of a selection. Any reason why I see and you’ve said you use majority of Ranger over Tim Holz line? I know Ranger owns Tim Holz but in my research I see Ranger is more expensive. Better selection of color? TIA

I think this is lovely! My question, tho, what do you do with a round image after you've sealed it? How do you frame it? or perhaps a table top (if one does a lot of resin, and I do not). I love the look, but then what?? Ideas?

I am back now though, and hoping to get back to a regular weekly upload (maybe twice a week when I have time). Thank you for caring! I really appreciate it!
