12 x 20 Shed - Build VERSUS Buying and the Cost BREAKDOWN.

2 years ago I built this 12 x 20 shed. In the end, it was cheaper to build it versus buying it.
If you have the time and the talent, you can build a bigger and better shed then what you can get at the big box stores like Home Depot or Lowes.

4,500 buying big box stores maybe save a bit more on the second hand drift wood stores there usually less or don’t charge tax

Thanks! Yes, that pole saw drives me crazy. Constantly leaking. I’m probably just going to stick the head in a 5 gallon bucket and throw it in the corner. Lol

Nice work Tom, does it stay relatively cool, not like a hot box? I didn't notice a ridge vent, but the vented soffit should help keep the air moving. Definitely make a nice man cave with sleds as chairs, just have to rearrange the sleds a bit.

It gets warm. Not too bad though, I do have a lot of tree cover. I’ll probably add a couple of gable vents in the fall.

Sorry, not super handy with the building and stuff. How do the vents you showed out side airing the shed? And also why not a slab on the bottom?

  • @StreetersGarage

    @StreetersGarage

    Жыл бұрын

The vents will draw air from the outside and the hot air will vent through the gable vents which are the highest point in the building. If I poured a slab , it would be classified as a permanent structure and I would then be taxed on the structure

I'm thinking of getting a 12x 20 or 30 but if I build it I'm going to lose time working so I'm thinking about just paying the full price of one delivered complete cuz it would basically even out anyway. New sub! Thanks for the videos!

I definitely underestimated the time to get it done. I probably spent more time on the trim, soffit and paint then the actual framing.

Really nice job. Only a few concerns 1) That Polaris poster is way too big. 2) There are no BRP products in that shed. Oh and you might want to put a drip edge on the bottom of the siding so water does not run back up the siding causing rot. Just a thought. Once again nice job .

Thanks Mark. Poster needs to be bigger! I need to do that on the doors. Since I don’t have a gutter, I get splash back from the water hitting the ramp and the bottom of the doors get wet.

Nice shed for your sled👍🏾 😊. How long did it take you to build? And how much manpower? (Solo or a friend or two)

About 4 weeks from ground preparation to shingling and installing the trim. All done during the weekends. Had a buddy help me with the roof.

Beneath the T-111 siding, is there house wrap and another sheet of plywood?

  • @StreetersGarage

No it’s just the T-111 sine it’s not heated.

Why OSB roof then plywood everywhere else? My 8x12 kit this year was $2,000 but used cheaper OSB all around (did not include finish painting, roof shingle/flashing which I had from previous projects, about $400 more if I had to purchase). I also built one from the ground up didn't cost me anything, all recycled material except concrete slab about $500 for premix bags and rebars.

For the roof, OSB is fine with the size of the rafters and 16” on center.

Hard to tell from the video, but I lined the the supports with chicken wire to keep rabbits and squirrels out. Also on the back side it’s against a 4’ retaining wall drop off so that helps to prevent any burrowing creatures. No mice yet. Only thing I’ve had so far is some spiders by the windows.
