    (just broke my canon m50 screen today lol) tip from the accident - is to get a sturdy tripod especially for outside usage and be sure to make sure the legs are as far out as possible. I tried to bring them in to make the height a bit more vertical which led to wind pushing it over hitting the ground and breaking the screen. So make sure your tripod legs are wide especially when you aren’t manning the camera in the moment. Also the screen protector is going on the next one i get lmao seems like a no brainer not sure why i never thought of it. Thank you for sharing your tips and stories!

    A minor correction on your battery topic the battery will not leak as they are lithium ion. However a much more serious thing may happen they could light on fire or even explode so if the battery swells put that thing in a tub of sand and find a local place that will properly dispose of it

    Mark, I've enjoyed viewing your videos as I'm a recent purchaser of the M50 Mark ii. An avid hiker using a full size DSLR I've finally decided I want a much lighter camera to carry around on the trails. I've appreciated your video on the best 10 and how to not damage and have purchased several of your recommendations. With that being said, I've just discovered that the premium NV filter you recommended does not allow the recommended lens hood to fit (filter will not fit over filter so it can be screwed on). You might want to mention that to your viewers.

  • @markwiemels

    @markwiemels

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks, this is the hood and filter I am using, but I did have another viewer report the same issue, so maybe be something has changed or amazon has automatically sent you to another filter. The last viewer did report that they eventually got it to work. Make sure you are putting the lens hood on the right way. The biggest pedals go top and bottom.

    Thanks for this. Some good ideas here. A couple of things to note: 1. Quite a few of the reviewers of the tempered glass (Pack of 3) Compatible Canon Eos M50 Screen Protector you recommend say that the M50s screen will not close fully because the Screen Protector is too big. 2. Old Pro Tip for protecting lenses and the M50s sensor from dust, rain and so on when changing lenses - change the lenses in a knapsack, or camera back (if it is big enough), or in a big enough plastic bag. Best to squat down to do this, so that you can put the lens and camera on the ground (or flat top of your camera bag) when they are in the plastic bag.

  • @markwiemels

    @markwiemels

    Thanks, good tips. In regards to the screen protector, it closes, but does not “click” in while closed. I just leave it screen out, as the screen is now protected and you can manually turn the screen off, if you don’t want it active.

  • @drutgat2

    @drutgat2

    @@markwiemels Thanks for your reply, Mark. I should have been more precise in describing the Screen Protector problem. The main thing I was trying to get across, though, is that people were unaware that the screen will not close *fully*, and this is a problem for some. This speaks to the issue of the camera being potentially damaged in some way (in this specific case, by debris, grit or other unwanted, potentially damaging agents getting between the screen and back of the body, into the hinge and so on).

    Hello Mark, thank you for your m50 video series. I live in San Francisco and know all too well the m50's lack of weatherproofing vis-a-vis our famous fog--I damaged my last m50 body due to moisture. One advantage I like about the m50 is the lower liability vs higher-end camera equipment. Not that I'm careless, but I'm more apt to take my m50 with me not only for its diminutive size, but because it don't need to worry about it. I hope Canon doesn't drop the m platform now that the company is making APS-C R-cameras. Thank you!

    I like my neck strap, sometimes I can use it as a third point of contact when I'm having issues holding the camera steady. I learned the trick from guns, some guns don't have a stock so you can use tension in the shoulder strap to help hold it steady, just basically do the same thing with the camera. Put both hands on the camera however you're going to hold it, then hold it out so it pulls at the neck strap to help keep it steady.

    There are messages that one cannot close the screen fully after fitting the protector. One wants to be able to close the screen as normal. I got me an ExpertShield screen protector. I think the trick is to fit it with as much clearance as possible on the hinge side because that is where the clearances will be the smallest. Any non-flush closing at the hinge will then be more pronounced at the other side of the screen. In the end I ignored the overly complicated fitting instructions (making a hinge with tape) and just fitted it carefully. Aligned it well, pressed down gently and watched with amazement how the rest just 'sucked' against the screen. Works perfect, screen closes too.

    About the batteries. Your link goes to 1100mAH batteries while Canon's and most 3rd party ones are in the 800 to 875mAH range. I would think that these high capacity batteries might be more prone to have some problem than the normal ones.

    Changing efm or efm size lenses is the only time i use the neck strap, i have quick relese on the strap so its easy to put on (usually use a wrist strap) with the camera around my neck i hold the in-coming lens in my left hand and press the lens release with the same hand, remove the lens with the right hand and the new lens is put straight on, minimum sensor exposure time. with the bigger ef lenses i usually have the hood up in the open position so the lens can sit face down on it, then i put the camera onto the lens facing down. when you use a plastic or silicone waterproof bag to cover the M50 from rain can you end up with condensation inside the camera?

    A couple of months ago, I set my M50 outside, recording video. I'd put it in the path a rabbit often takes around my house, hoping to catch some close-up footage. Well, I got involved in other things and forgot about it. All night. Through TWO thunderstorms. And I had not put any kind of protection on it. The next day I remembered and ran outside in a panic to retrieve it. I dried it off, careful to keep it level so as to not let any water that might have gotten in move to places inside that were still dry, removed the battery and SD card, and stowed it away in our attic where it gets quite hot. About 48 hours later, I started it up. Amazingly, it worked fine. And I've had no problems develop so far. I feel SUPER lucky! The next purchase I made was a weather protection bag, just in case I decide to get uncareful with it again.

Lastly what are your honest thoughts about the EF-M mount seeing that Canon isn't pushing any new lenses out and is instead focused on the RF lineup?

    I have had no safety issues with third party batteries but they do run out faster. I have ran had at lest four third party batteries lose their capacity whereas none of the original despite there being as many originals. Still the lat years so that is not a major issue. Canon batteries last ages, I still have the one I got 2014 with my EOS M. One reason I bought M50 was that it used the same battery. I only use third party batteries as an emergency. Once I am back I charge both and then put the original back in the camera. It is good to carry lens cleaning wipes with you if you need to clean the lenses. You can also clean your glasses with them. I grab the other lens before I take the old off. Once I take the old one with my left hand I immediately put the new one in with my right one. I have got dust less than once in a year despite changing. I have changed lenses 2700 times and gotten dust 4-5 times.

    RF lenses defeats the advantage of an APS-C camera. Compared to the M mount lenses the RF ones have big 3 disadvantages, size, weight and price. The only lenses missing in the M mount are the super tele/zoom lenses for e.g. wildlife photography. For that purpose I can buy an adapter and an EF/EF-S lens.

    One question regarding the screen protector. Should I go with a glass one, but from what I've read, I can no longer close the screen (flip it back with the screen inside), as it's too thick, or go with a plastic one, which offers less protection, but I can still flip back the screen? Thanks!

  • @markwiemels

    @markwiemels

    2 жыл бұрын

    The one I have suggested allows the screen to close, and it stays closed, but doesn't do the hard click, as it does without the protector. I personally would only close it to protect the screen anyways. If you want to only use the viewfinder, and not have the screen active, you can turn the screen off in the menu system as well.

    It’s a good question, I don’t think it’s a real issue for the most part. I wouldn’t let it sit open for long periods, but you can change the lens in the daylight and it’s not an issue.
